Xavier Chaplin Prospect Preview

By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap:

With Virginia Tech, Chaplin was one of the top left tackles in the ACC in 2024. He improved as a blocker after a solid debut season as a starter in 2023 for the Hokies. Chaplin has excellent size with impressive movement skills for such a big blocker.

2025 Season Outlook:

Chaplin will see some good defensive talent when he goes against Oklahoma (Sep. 20), Texas A&M (Sep. 27), Georgia (Oct. 11), and Alabama (Nov. 29).

Prospect Summary:

The NFL is always in need of edge blocking talent, and Chaplin has a skill set that is tough to find. He is a massive blocker at the point of attack who has a rare combination of size, length, quickness, and athleticism. If Chaplin works at improving his craft, he could be a well-rounded starting tackle in the NFL.

As a pass blocker, Chaplin is hard to get around due to his massive size and length. He shows the athleticism to slide his feet and get depth in his drop to cut off the edge from speed rushers. With good quickness, Chaplin can get to his spot and negate the speed rushers’ ability to blow by him. With his mass, he is also tough to beat with a bull rush, as Chaplin is a load for defensive ends to get moving backwards. Chaplin has the talent to be an effective pass blocker.

In the ground game, Chaplin is more of a wall-off blocker. He twists, turns, and ties up defenders more than knocking them off the ball. With his size, quickness, and athleticism, Chaplin is a great fit in a zone blocking scheme that wants large tackles. Chaplin has size and strength, but it would help him to add and block with more functional power. Chaplin needs to finish better for the NFL and get nastier. He needs to show a mean streak and look to punish defenders and finish them off.

There are areas for Chaplin to improve upon in 2025. First of all, he needs to get more consistent. Chaplin needs to clean up his technique, and he has some issues with getting sloppy late in games. That could be an issue with conditioning, but late in games, he seems to get tired, and that leads to problems with fundamentals. Chaplin has a great skill set and a ton of talent, but becoming a more consistent player is a necessity for the NFL.

Chaplin has the talent to be a starting left or right tackle in the NFL, and he could be a special prospect if he plays up to his immense talent in 2025.

2026 NFL Draft Expectations:

Entering the 2025 season, Chaplin looks like he has first-round potential for the 2026 NFL Draft.
