Tony Rojas Prospect Preview

By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap:

While Abdul Carter got all the attention, the Penn State defense had other impressive defenders who will be pro prospects in their draft class. Rojas was one of those Nittany Lions as he had a breakout 2024 season. While helping get his team into the college football playoff, Rojas totaled 58 tackles with four passes broken up, three interceptions, one sack, and one interception returned for a touchdown.

2025 Season Outlook:

There will be some very good games to watch Rojas in 2025, including Oregon (Sep. 27), Iowa (Oct. 18), Ohio State (Nov. 1), and Indiana (Nov. 15).

Prospect Summary:

While NFL teams do not draft many off-the-ball linebackers in the first round, they are still an essential commodity for any good pro defense. Three down linebackers who can help shut down the run and contribute in pass coverage are very valuable, and Rojas has that type of ability for the NFL. Rojas was impressive in 2024, and he looks like he has the upside to be better as he gains more experience.

In pass coverage, Rojas looks like he has the potential to be a special linebacker. He is very athletic, quick, and smooth dropping in zone coverage. He covers a lot of ground, reads the quarterback’s eyes well, and is very skilled at disrupting passing lanes. For a linebacker, Rojas has impressive man coverage ability to cover up receivers that come into his zone, and he shows an adept ability at breaking up passes. Rojas has rare ball skills to not only slap passes away, but pick them off with soft hands. Along with being a good zone coverage linebacker, Rojas was impressive in man on tight ends. For the NFL, Rojas looks like a future asset as a pass coverage linebacker.

In the ground game, Rojas attacks the line of scrimmage and shows zero hesitation to fire into the line. He has a nice ability to shed blocks and does not look to run around blockers. Rojas is athletic enough to work his way through trash and is a good pursuit linebacker.

For the NFL, Rojas could stand to get stronger for tackling pro backs. He could use some more stopping power and strength to take them to the ground. He also has a tendency to aim high sometimes, so getting lower and wrapping up the legs would make him a more capable run defender at the pro level.

If Rojas continues to develop, he looks like he has real three-down starting potential for the NFL.

2026 NFL Draft Expectations:

Entering the 2025 season, Rojas looks like he has early-round potential for the 2026 NFL Draft.
