Malachi Fields Scouting Report

By Charlie Campbell

Strengths:

  • Good size
  • Polished route-runner
  • Good ball adjustment
  • Advanced body control
  • Makes contested catches
  • Physical
  • Solid speed for a big receiver
  • Red zone weapon
  • Dangerous on 50-50 passes
  • High points ball well
  • Tracks the ball well
  • Respectable after the catch

Weaknesses:

  • Lacks elite speed
  • Could have separation issues against pro corners

Prospect Summary:

Fields has been a solid and consistent boundary receiver over the past three seasons. In 2023 at Virginia, Fields had 58 receptions for 811 yards with five touchdowns. The next season, he totaled 55 catches for 808 yards and five scores. For his senior year, Fields transferred to Notre Dame and played well. The Irish were breaking in an inexperienced starting quarterback and featured a dynamic ground-based offense with Jeremiah Love and Jadarian Price. Fields totaled 36 catches for 630 yards and five touchdowns. After the season, he had a good performance at the Senior Bowl.

For the NFL, Fields is a tall, long receiver who is a red-zone weapon and provides a size mismatch for the NFL. He is a dangerous red-zone threat given his massive wingspan, height, leaping ability, and strong hands. Fields is a possession receiver who is capable after the catch, as he will dart into the secondary and power his way through defensive backs after making short catches on slants, crossers, and digs. On back shoulder throws or jump balls, Fields is very skilled at boxing out defenders and making the catch over them. On 50-50 jump balls, Fields is a dynamic playmaker.

Fields is not a burner wide receiver who is going to torch NFL cornerbacks with speed. Higgins lacks a second gear and has one play speed through his routes. He is a long strider that lacks twitchy quickness. Thus, he could have separation issues with some pro cornerbacks.

In the 2026 NFL Draft, Fields looks like a day-two pick. Check out my latest 2026 NFL Mock Draft to see where Fields is projected.

Prospect Comparison:

Tee Higgins. In terms of style of play, Fields reminds me of Tee Fields. They are similar in size and are dangerous in the red zone.
