2014 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of Aug. 5
AUG. 11
Lance Dunbar, RB, Cowboys
Jason Garrett told the media that he didn’t use Lance Dunbar in the preseason opener because they have big plans for him during the regular season. With DeMarco Murray being injury-prone, Dunbar should be a late-round target.
AUG. 8
Kenny Britt, WR, Rams
Kenny Britt, who has enjoyed a fantastic summer, has emerged as a leader in St. Louis, according to Ian Rapoport. Make sure to grab Britt with one of your final selections because he could have a big rebound season.
Andre Brown, RB, Texans
Andre Brown needs a stock up. Arian Foster is still not practicing because of a bum hamstring, and he’ll miss the opener. Brown will almost certainly start a few games this year.
Cam Newton, QB, Panthers
Cam Newton told FOX’s Alex Marvez that he doesn’t expect to scramble as much this year. He said he’s “reluctant with mobility” because he’s coming off ankle surgery.
AUG. 7
Andre Holmes, WR, Raiders
Andre Holmes has been Oakland’s best receiver in training camp, and he has emerged as Matt Schaub’s most reliable target. Holmes finished on a strong note last year, so he makes for a nice sleeper.
Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys
Tony Romo has struggled with his deep ball, according to his quarterbacks’ coach. Romo, coming off his second back procedure, may not be 100 percent this year, though he will be throwing quite often because Dallas may have the worst defense in NFL history.
AUG. 6
Odell Beckham, WR, Giants
Odell Beckham has now missed nearly two weeks with a hamstring injury. Rookie wideouts often tend to be worthless, especially injured ones.
Devonta Freeman, RB, Falcons
Devonta Freeman is listed as the fourth running back on the depth chart. It’s a reminder that rookies are great in theory, but often tend to disappoint. I wouldn’t mind taking a chance on Freeman late in the draft, but he’s going a bit too early for my liking at 10.03.
Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles
Jeremy Maclin has missed some practice time lately because of soreness in his legs. Maclin is very injury-prone – especially now, coming off a torn ACL – so he’s not to be trusted. He’s being overdrafted, so I would avoid him unless he falls.
AUG. 5
Montee Ball, RB, Broncos
Montee Ball will be out with an appendectomy, but he’s expected to be ready for Week 1. I’m not giving him a thumbs-down arrow for this. It’s obviously not an ideal situation, but Ball still figures to get most of the touches. Also, it’s worth noting that Ball could fall in drafts. You might be able to get him in the second round now.
Kenny Britt, WR, Rams
Kenny Britt has reportedly looked explosive in training camp. He has also been named to the starting lineup. Now reunited with Jeff Fisher, Britt could easily have a bounce-back campaign, so he’s worth drafting late. He’s in my updated Fantasy Football Sleepers list.
Jordan Reed, TE, Redskins
Patriot beat writers have reported that Jordan Reed has been exceptional in joint practices with New England. Reed is an injury risk, but he’ll post huge numbers if he can stay healthy.
AUG. 4
T.Y. Hilton, WR, Colts
T.Y. Hilton is getting all of the first-team looks, as he’s clearly ahead of Hakeem Nicks on the depth chart. Now in his third year, Hilton could make a huge leap. He caught at least five passes in all but two of his final 11 games in 2013.
Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders
Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune tweeted Saturday that the Raiders have improved Darren McFadden’s weight room routine. It’s nice to see that the media is finally catching up to something we’ve been discussing since February. Oakland has done more than just bolster McFadden’s work ethic in the weight room; the improved routine is why he re-signed with the team in the first place. McFadden (hopefully) figures to surprise non-readers of this Web site by staying healthy for a change this year.
Hakeem Nicks, WR, Colts
Colts’ offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton told the media this past weekend that he’s disappointed in Hakeem Nicks’ conditioning. It’s a shame that Nicks is continuing to sabotage his career by not working hard enough.
