This is a PPR 2014 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 other members of the forum and followers on Twitter. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections from each two rounds. In a new addition this year, David Wipperman (forum member Ragnarok, a.k.a. Rags) will break down the best and worst teams from the mock draft.
Just a heads up that we have 2014 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday evening. Check out the fantasy mock draft thread for details.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: The 12th spot was the only one remaining when I signed in. Based on how this draft went, I’ll hope to obtain it in my real leagues. I began with Arian Foster, who inexplicably dropped. Foster will be used much more on third down this year, so he’s great for PPR leagues. I didn’t want to go RB-RB again, so I then chose Demaryius Thomas, who is bound to once again get tons of passes thrown his way.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: If Foster wasn’t on the board, I probably would have doubled up on wideouts with Thomas and A.J. Green, so “a” made a good pick there. Antonio Brown will be a big PPR producer for vb.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Andre Johnson is an aging receiver who is skipping workouts. He has no business being chosen in the second round of any format. Meanwhile, the DeMarco Murray choice was worse. Murray is too injury-prone to go in Round 1, especially given how deep the running back position is this year.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Wow, Aaron Rodgers at the end of the third round? I don’t understand how he fell so far. It didn’t even take me two seconds to make that selection.
I really like my other choice as well. Robert Griffin is bound to bounce back, which is good news for Pierre Garcon, an excellent PPR player. Garcon is one of only three receivers in NFL history to catch at least five passes in every single game during a season.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Clov had the best pick in these two rounds with Doug Martin, whom I actually thought about at 2.01. There’s no reason he should fall to the third round in any format. Some other players I was hoping to land at 3.12 include Alshon Jeffery, Vincent Jackson and Andre Ellington.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I really dislike Toby Gerhart. He’s not any good. Meanwhile, as good as Clov’s third-round choice was, his fourth-rounder will disappoint him. Wes Welker really slowed down as the 2013 season progressed, and at 33, he’s nowhere near the player he once was. He’ll still be an OK PPR option, but he went too early in this mock.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: My second and third running backs. I’m planning on waiting for them unless someone great falls to me because the position is so deep. In normal years, I feel as though Steven Jackson, Joique Bell, Ben Tate, etc. would be late-third, early-fourth-rounders. Jackson could easily score a dozen touchdowns this year, while Bell will log close to 50 receptions.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I mentioned Tate. Honestly, he was the only other selection I loved in these two rounds. Everything else was between above average and awful.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Speaking of above average, DeSean Jackson is incredibly overrated. There’s at least a bit of upside with him though. Ray Rice, on the other hand, won’t play until October, and who knows if he’ll ever be the same player he once was.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I wanted to take Darren McFadden at 6.01. I figured I’d wait and see if I could nab him at the end of the seventh, and I was able to. McFadden is the No. 1 player on my Fantasy Football Sleepers list, which will be updated once all of the season previews are posted.
Meanwhile, Kyle Rudolph is going to have a huge year with Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator. I’ll be thrilled if I can land him in Round 8 of my real leagues.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Danny Woodhead and Reggie Wayne are two players I would’ve strongly considered with my two selections. The former will once again catch tons of passes, while Wayne is typically a high-receptions guy. I also enjoyed the Lamar Miller pick.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: The Lions plan on running the ball more this year, and Golden Tate is not that good to begin with, so I hate him in Round 7. I also think 8.03 is too early for Terrance West. Ben Tate’s backup could certainly start some games, but he’s just a rookie, so there’s no guarantee he’ll receive a full workload if the starter gets hurt. I’d be fine with West in Round 10.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: I recently discussed Dwayne Bowe in my Fantasy Football Stock Report, so check that out. I wish I could have obtained Bowe a bit later, but the receivers were flying off the board. Russell Wilson was best player available since I didn’t love anyone remaining.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Some of the receivers I wanted include Anquan Boldin and Cecil Shorts. I was also hoping Bernard Pierce would fall to me. I was fine at running back, but he’s an absolute steal in Round 9.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Some receivers I didn’t want include Sammy Watkins, Eric Decker and Riley Cooper. Also, anyone who took a defense this early should be ashamed of themselves.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Marvin Jones could be in for a big season, given that he’s expected to play way more snaps this year. Meanwhile, I mentioned this last week, but I like Aaron Dobson’s value in the 12th round. He was starting to put everything together before he got hurt this past season.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I would’ve considered Mike Evans at 11.12. I did consider Jarrett Boykin there, but I like my wideouts better. Charles Clay was a solid choice as well.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Knowshon Moreno may not make Miami’s roster … Jordan Matthews is just a second-round rookie … Jonathan Stewart sucks … Steve Smith, even worse.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: A handcuff for Arian Foster; Andre Brown will get plenty of work on early downs. The Eagles play the Jaguars in Week 1, and Blair Walsh is awesome.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: There were a couple of high-upside picks in the final round, including Richard Rodgers, who has looked great at OTAs, and Kenny Britt, who had success with Jeff Fisher in Tennessee.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: I wouldn’t say there’s anything terrible here. Perhaps Mark Ingram, who figures to be New Orleans’ third running back.
My Fantasy Team:
QB – Aaron Rodgers, Packers
RB – Arian Foster, Texans
RB – Steven Jackson, Falcons
WR – Demaryius Thomas, Broncos
WR – Pierre Garcon, Redskins
RB/WR – Joique Bell, RB, Lions
TE – Kyle Rudolph, Vikings
K – Blair Walsh, Vikings
DEF – Eagles Defense
BN – Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders
BN – Dwayne Bowe, WR, Chiefs
BN – Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks
BN – Marvin Jones, WR, Bengals
BN – Aaron Dobson, WR, Patriots
BN – Andre Brown, RB, Texans
This team is pretty strong. Its unreal that I was able to land Arian Foster, Demaryius Thomas and Aaron Rodgers despite having the 12th pick. That’s a great trio, and they’ll carry my team. I’d say RB2 is my weakest spot, but I think I’m fairly deep at the position.
