2014 Fantasy Football Mock Draft

Aug. 21, 2014.

This is a 2-QB 2014 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 other members of the forum and followers on Twitter. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections from each two rounds. In a new addition this year, David Wipperman (forum member Ragnarok, a.k.a. Rags) will break down the best and worst teams from the mock draft.

Just a heads up that we have 2014 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday evening. Check out the fantasy mock draft thread for details.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I’m not in any 2-QB leagues, but I’ve received some requests to do a mock draft in that format. I didn’t want a pick in the top three either because those selections are no-brainers. I considered Tom Brady at 1.06, but then quickly realized that Adrian Peterson provides so much more value.

My second choice was much tougher. I wanted a quarterback there, especially with all of the tier-one receivers gone. I have the sixth through 12th quarterbacks bunched in together, and I thought Cam Newton, of all the quarterbacks, wouldn’t make it to 3.06.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: There are lots of picks that make sense, though I’ll give Taco and Charlie credit for nabbing players I desperately coveted with my second choice.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Running backs bust more than any other position. Injury-prone running backs, especially. Marshawn Lynch and Arian Fosters are reaches there in a 2-QB format.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick were the last of my top-12 quarterbacks, so I chose the one I had higher in my Fantasy Football Rankings.

As for the fourth round, I was pleased to be able to obtain a second-tier receiver. They’re all gone by the end of the third round in normal formats.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Vincent Jackson was the other receiver I considered at 4.07. Giovani Bernard, Doug Martin, Zac Stacy, Andre Ellington and Antonio Brown are other players who provided great value. I also liked some of the quarterback choices in Round 3, including Tony Romo, Robert Griffin and Kaepernick.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I understand that there was a mega run on quarterbacks, but Andy Dalton at the end of Round 4? That’s not a terrible choice, but still. A bad pick is C.J. Spiller at 4.10. The injury-prone Spiller will once again be splitting touches with Fred Jackson.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: My second running back and receiver. Larry Fitzgerald is undervalued, as he’s looked good in the preseason thus far. Lamar Miller will be getting all of the touches in Miami.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Pierre Garcon and Rashad Jennings were obtained at great value. Nothing else really stands out.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: You almost have to pick two quarterbacks in the first three rounds of a 2-QB format. Otherwise, you end up with crap like Eli Manning and Joe Flacco as one of your starters.

There were worse picks though, including the plodding Toby Gerhart, the error-prone Reggie Bush, the always-hurt DeSean Jackson and the declining Wes Welker.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I love Kyle Rudolph this year; I have him listed in my Fantasy Football Sleepers page. Reggie Wayne, meanwhile, was more of a consolation prize for me, as I had my eyes on Marques Colston. Sucks to be me, indeed.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Colston, obviously. I was also hoping for Maurice Jones-Drew on the way back.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Chris Johnson is a wasted pick. He’s the only selection I really hate in these two rounds. Johnson won’t be the lead back for long.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: I’m not very confident in Stevan Ridley because of his fumbling issues, but he’s still New England’s starter. I think he’s fine in Round 9. I’ve said enough about Darren McFadden, so you know why I chose him here.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Very jealous of Ben Tate. I wanted him with my ninth pick. I would have considered Bernard Pierce in the 10th frame as well.

I also like some of these high-upside picks. Justin Hunter, Carlos Hyde, Joique Bell and Terrance West could be big producers. Don’t forget about Josh Gordon either. Hopefully the NFL stops dragging its feet with him so we know where to draft him.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Sammy Watkins and Brandin Cooks should not be going in the ninth round. Rookies almost always disappoint. Get someone more reliable in the middle of your draft instead. Also, Ladarius Green is a reach. Antonio Gates is not going anywhere. I’d like Green in the 11th or 12th round; not in the ninth.

Oh, and if you’re expecting me to rant about a defense going in the 10th round, sorry. That ship has sailed. Not going to do it anymore because people just won’t listen.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I was hoping for Dwayne Bowe in the 11th round, but it appears as though his one-game suspension isn’t scaring anyone off. Maybe Kenny Britt’s great training camp will carry over into the regular season. And then there’s Matt Cassel. Blegh. I actually wanted Ryan Fitzpatrick, but he went two selections earlier to Ragnarok. I can’t believe I was upset over someone taking Fitzpatrick. This format sucks.

Speaking of Ragnarok, check out our selections. Notice a pattern? Save for a couple of choices, we selected players from the same position in every round. Great minds.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I’m wondering if I should raise Hakeem Nicks in my rankings after what he did this past weekend. Mark Ingram has also been terrific in the preseason, so I like that pick, as well as the one after (Andre Williams). Christine Michael, meanwhile, is a very high-upside choices for Zac Price, though Robert Turbin could foil his plans. More on Turbin later…

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Some terrible quarterbacks chosen here, but those weren’t bad picks. It’s just the format. I actually don’t see any poor choices in these two rounds. Perhaps Tavon Austin and Eric Ebron, but both do have upside.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: The coaching staff insists on giving Robert Turbin the carries over Christine Michael, so perhaps I’ll have an RB2 on my hands when Marshawn Lynch gets hurt.

Defense, kicker. I went with the Lions because they battle the putrid Giants in Week 1.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Looking for players with upside, Cecil Shorts really stands out. He could post WR3 numbers once he’s healthy. And speaking of Jaguars, I nearly took Blake Bortles at 13.06. He has been awesome this preseason. Check out my Rookie Quarterback Rankings for more.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Players with no upside in these rounds include DeAndre Hopkins, a receiver who struggles to gain separation, playing with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

My Fantasy Team:

QB – Cam Newton, Panthers
QB – Russell Wilson, Seahawks
RB – Adrian Peterson, Vikings
RB – Lamar Miller, Dolphins
WR – Randall Cobb, Packers
WR – Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals
RB/WR – Reggie Wayne, Colts
TE – Kyle Rudolph, Vikings
K – Blair Walsh, Vikings
DEF – Lions Defense

BN – Stevan Ridley, RB, Patriots
BN – Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders
BN – Kenny Britt, WR, Rams
BN – Matt Cassel, QB, Vikings
BN – Robert Turbin, RB, Seahawks

I don’t like that my two top quarterbacks run around a lot. If one of them gets hurt, I’ll have to start Matt Cassel each week. Blegh.

Otherwise, not bad. Adrian Peterson and Randall Cobb figure to be big weekly producers, and I don’t think I’m weak anywhere.
