2014 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of Aug. 11
AUG. 16
Dwayne Bowe, WR, Chiefs
Dwayne Bowe has been suspended for one game for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Bowe obviously deserves a down arrow, but this could actually be a good thing because it’ll cause his ADP to drop, allowing you to obtain him for better value.
Zach Ertz, TE, Eagles
Zach Ertz needs a stock up with Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper both battling injuries. Ertz has reportedly stood out in training camp thus far, so he could have a breakout year.
Doug Martin, RB, Buccaneers
Rookie running back Charlie Sims will miss about three months with an ankle injury. It was always a ridiculous notion that Sims was going to take an ample amount of touches away from Doug Martin. Now it’s a fact that Sims won’t interfere with a player who will almost certainly rebound this season.
Charlie Sims, RB, Buccaneers
Charlie Sims will miss about three months with an ankle injury. This isn’t a big deal, as he was barely draftable to begin with.
AUG. 15
Charles Clay, TE, Dolphins
Charles Clay is “week to week,” according to Joe Philbin, and his Week 1 status is up in the air because of his knee injury.
Nick Foles, QB, Eagles
With major concerns in his receiving corps – Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper are both hurt, while Joran Matthews can’t catch anything – Nick Foles’ outlook isn’t very bright. He has been overdrafted in mocks anyway; he’s due for regression. I don’t even view him as a QB1.
Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles
Jeremy Maclin is unlikely to play this weekend because of lingering concerns about his knee. It’s been quite obvious that using a fifth- or sixth-round selection on Maclin is unwise because he can’t stay healthy, so maybe this will finally make his ADP drop. Maclin should be avoided unless he really slips in your league draft.
AUG. 14
Tavon Austin, WR, Rams
Torry Holt indicated Tuesday that Tavon Austin has been having a “very quiet” camp. Holt also pointed out that Austin did nothing in the preseason opener, though it should be noted that Sam Bradford didn’t suit up. Austin is nothing but a late-round flier until he shows something.
Arian Foster, RB, Texans
I wanted to note that Arian Foster returned to practice Wednesday, so that automatically gives him a stock-up arrow. However, Foster has practiced just once since July 27, and he’s very prone to injury. He’s someone who should be avoided until the middle of the second round.
AUG. 13
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Panthers
Kelvin Benjamin was named the star of Carolina’s training camp by ESPN Panthers’ David Newton. Benjamin hasn’t played with Cam Newton yet during the preseason, so I didn’t mention him in my preseason stock page. I wouldn’t trust a rookie receiver, but Benjamin still deserves a stock up.
AUG. 12
Alfred Blue, RB, Texans
The Texans are big fans of Alfred Blue, and perhaps he was a factor in their decision to cut Andre Brown. Blue will see playing time during the regular season because Arian Foster is so injury-prone. He’s a fine late-round flier.
Andre Brown, RB, Texans
The Texans made a very curious move Monday, cutting Andre Brown when he was the clear-cut second-best running back on the team. We’ll try to get to the bottom of this story, but in the meantime, it goes without saying that Brown is undraftable.
Marvin Jones, WR, Bengals
A quality sleeper, Marvin Jones broke his foot in training camp. He’ll be sidelined until about Week 5 or so, unfortunately.
Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seahawks
Want another reason to stay away from Marshawn Lynch? Lynch is being investigated for assault and property damage. There are so many reasons why Lynch will bust this year. Don’t make the mistake of drafting him.
AUG. 11
Lance Dunbar, RB, Cowboys
Jason Garrett told the media that he didn’t use Lance Dunbar in the preseason opener because they have big plans for him during the regular season. With DeMarco Murray being injury-prone, Dunbar should be a late-round target.
