2014 Fantasy Football Stock Report: Training Camp, OTAs

With training camp underway soon (and OTAs ongoing), there will be updates daily to this 2014 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock page if anything noteworthy happens.

If there’s an injury or a player surprising/disappointing, I’ll let you know about it and adjust my 2014 Fantasy Football Rankings accordingly. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

2014 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of July 21

JULY 29

Steven Jackson, RB, Falcons
Steven Jackson has been enjoying a solid camp thus far, according to Vaughn McClure, ESPN Falcons. Jackson is a great buy-low candidate this year. He’s not nearly the player he used to be, but Michael Turner scored about a dozen touchdowns for Atlanta when he was even worse. Jackson accumulated six touchdowns in the final six weeks of the 2013 season, so he has a good chance to get to 12 with the Falcons poised to rebound.

Charles Johnson, WR, Browns
Charles Johnson, who was already listed on my Fantasy Football Sleepers list, has reportedly thrived in training camp. Johnson is a freak athlete with loads of potential, but he’ll need to prove himself during actual game action. With the Browns hurting at receiver, Johnson could step up and become a starter. He’s worth taking in the final rounds.

JULY 28

Lamar Miller, RB, Dolphins
Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald wrote that the Dolphins believe Lamar Miller can be used like LeSean McCoy was last year. There’s zero doubt that barring injury, Miller will be the Dolphins’ starting running back. He’ll apparently be used extensively in the passing game as well.

Trent Richardson, RB, Colts
Trent Richardson has missed some practices with a hamstring injury. Richardson apparently knows the playbook now, but this definitely doesn’t help his 2014 outlook.

Cecil Shorts, WR, Jaguars
Cecil Shorts ended up straining his hamstring during practice on Friday. He’ll be out for two weeks, and it’s unlikely that he’ll play all 16 games because hamstring maladies tend to resurface for receivers.

Julius Thomas, TE, Broncos
Julius Thomas has worked out with Tony Gonzalez this offseason. It’s great that Thomas is taking his professional career seriously rather than rolling $20s in bathrooms or racking up DUIs each weekend. Thomas could conceivably improve upon his 2013 numbers.

JULY 27

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Raiders
I’ve been hyping Darren McFadden this summer, but I’ve been advised by a source to move Maurice Jones-Drew up my rankings. The Raiders plan on running the ball early and often, and want to use Jones-Drew more frequently in between the tackles, while McFadden will be the team’s pass-catcher.

Mike Wallace, WR, Dolphins
Miami’s offensive line has been woeful thus far in training camp, with their backup center struggling in place of the injured Mike Pouncey. Mike Wallace will be affected, so don’t expect him to rebound.

JULY 26

Vick Ballard, RB, Colts
Vick Ballard is out for the year with a torn Achilles.

Andre Johnson, WR, Texans
Andre Johnson reported to training camp. Regression due to age could still be a problem, but at least he’s not missing any practice time.

Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seahawks
Marshawn Lynch has decided to hold out. It’s a stupid move – he’s fairly paid and has no leverage – but this is yet another reason to stay away from him. He’s near the top of my Fantasy Football Busts list, which will be updated this weekend.

Cecil Shorts, WR, Jaguars
Cecil Shorts has endured a troublesome hamstring throughout the offseason, and it got worse on Friday when he had to leave practice early because it was giving him problems. Hamstring injuries tend to linger, especially for receivers.

JULY 25

James Jones, WR, Raiders
Sources have told us that James Jones has been dreadful for the Raiders thus far. He has looked done in practice, and it’s unclear if he’s either mailing it in or if he just stinks without Aaron Rodgers. Don’t draft him.

Bernard Pierce, RB, Ravens
Ray Rice is only going to be out for two games. Sucks for Bernard Pierce and his owners. I’d still rather have Pierce than Rice in non-PPR formats because the latter was putrid last year, but Pierce is no longer a promising 2014 fantasy prospect.

Ray Rice, RB, Ravens
Ray Rice has been suspended for only two games for hitting his girlfriend, while Josh Gordon will get a year for smoking weed. Unreal. Rice gets a stock up because he’ll be back in Week 3, but he looked done last year, so I wouldn’t draft him.

Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers
Jonathan Stewart will be out for a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury. Surprise, surprise. Stewart is not worth drafting in the first 12-13 rounds.

JULY 24

Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
Tom Brady gets a stock up today because Rob Gronkowski was cleared by doctors. Gronkowski is still a long shot to play all 16 games, but his current availability is terrific news for Brady, who is going too late in fantasy mock drafts.

Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers
Vernon Davis threatened to hold out during the summer, but he reported to training camp on Wednesday. This is obviously great news for his fantasy outlook this season.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, Patriots
There was speculation that Rob Gronkowski would be put on the active/PUP list to start training camp, but he won’t be going on that. He has been cleared by doctors because he’s way ahead of schedule on his rehab. Just keep in mind that Gronkowski is still injury-prone and thus carries lots of risk.

Sidney Rice, WR, Seahawks
Sidney Rice shouldn’t have been on anyone’s fantasy radar anyway, but he announced his retirement Wednesday. It’s a shame he hasn’t been able to stay healthy because he was highly effective on the rare occasions in which he was 100 percent.

David Wilson, RB, Giants
David Wilson has reportedly looked “dynamic as ever” during practices since being cleared. He’s still expected to open as the No. 2 running back, but he may take more and more carries away from Rashad Jennings as the season progresses.

JULY 23

Odell Beckham, WR, Giants
Odell Beckham has endured hamstring issues throughout OTAs, and he pulled up lame Tuesday. There’s still plenty of time before the season begins, but Beckham is a rookie, so he needs the reps. Hamstring maladies tend to linger, so stay away from Beckham this summer.

Rashad Jennings, RB, Giants
This is the third stock down for Rashad Jennings in about five days. This time, Jennings gets knocked because he’s not being considered for goal-line duties. Rookie Andre Williams is getting first crack at the gig. With David Wilson back, Jennings’ outlook isn’t very bright.

JULY 22

Eli Manning, Rashad Jennings, Victor Cruz, QB/RB/WR, Giants
All Giants are getting a slight bump down in the rankings today in the wake of Chris Snee’s retirement. The offensive line was a big issue for the team last year, and it appears as though that’ll be the case once again now that it’s clear Snee won’t be returning.

JULY 21

Christine Michael, RB, Seahawks
Christine Michael has reportedly been fantastic in OTAs thus far. Michael is a great talent who might be a first-round fantasy pick in the future. As for now, he’s worth grabbing in the middle rounds because Marshawn Lynch is due to get hurt or suffer a decline because of his recent workload.
