2010 Fantasy Football: Training Camp Fantasy Stock

With training camp underway, there will be updates daily to this 2010 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock page if anything noteworthy happens.

If there’s an injury or a player surprising/disappointing, I’ll let you know about it and adjust my 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings accordingly.

2010 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock – Week of July 26

AUG. 1

Dwayne Bowe, WR, Chiefs
Per various sources, Dwayne Bowe has been tearing it up in training camp and hasn’t dropped any passes. This is great news, as the effort isn’t always there with Bowe. He’s a great buy-low candidate after a disastrous 2009.

Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys
So much for all the Dez Bryant fantasy hype. Bryant suffered a high ankle sprain and is now hoping to return in the final preseason game. This wouldn’t be a big deal if Bryant were a veteran, but any rookie needs reps in training camp and exhibition games. Bryant should still finish the year strong, but don’t count on him to do much early on.

Justin Forsett, RB, Seahawks
Leon Washington practiced Saturday, which is not good news for Justin Forsett. If healthy, Washington will eat into Forsett’s touches.

Montario Hardesty, RB, Browns
Montario Hardesty twisted his knee and will be out a couple of weeks. This may force the Browns to actually give more reps to the better player at the position (Jerome Harrison). What a concept.

Jerome Harrison, RB, Browns
Montario Hardesty twisted his knee and will be out a couple of weeks. Jerome Harrison will get more reps, but the Browns are foolish enough to go back to Hardesty once he’s healthy. Note to all NFL teams: If you want to suck every year, keep the best players at their position on the bench, and use second-round picks on injury-prone prospects to replace them.

Johnny Knox, WR, Bears
Jay Cutler threw to Johnny Knox more than any receiver on Friday. We’ll see what happens in the preseason games, but with Devin Aromashodu getting all the hype, Knox has a great value.

JULY 31

Cedric Benson, RB, Bengals
Roger Goodell announced that Cedric Benson will not be suspended for punching someone at a bar a few months ago. No suspensions for Benson, Vince Young and QB Dog Killer? Looks like Goodell has gone soft on us.

Owen Daniels, TE, Texans
Gary Kubiak said Friday that he’s hoping to have Owen Daniels in the lineup for the opener. Key word: hoping. Daniels is coming off ACL surgery, and won’t practice or play in preseason games this August. There are just way too many other options at tight end to consider Daniels in the first 10 rounds.

Brandon Tate, WR, Patriots
More glowing praise for Brandon Tate – this time from Bill Belichick. Tate has had an amazing offseason. If he parlays that into a solid preseason, make sure you obtain him in the final rounds of your fantasy draft.

JULY 30

Antonio Bryant, WR, Buccaneers
This isn’t a surprise or anything, but Antonio Bryant had trouble planting and cutting on his left leg during practice yesterday. He’s someone to avoid unless you’re in an ultra deep league.

Marques Colston, WR, Saints
Marques Colston was placed on the active/PUP list in the wake of an offseason knee scope. Colston is expected to be ready by Week 1, but he’s had two procedures on his knees before. This is a situation to monitor in training camp.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Steelers
I’ve been down on Rashard Mendenhall all offseason, but he received a good bit of news on Thursday when Pittsburgh signed Flozell Adams to a 2-year deal. Adams is 35 and can no longer pass protect very well, but he is still a strong run blocker. He’s a decent replacement for Willie Colon.

Overall, I still don’t like Mendenhall too much because he’s going way too early in most leagues. But I’m definitely projecting slightly better stats for him in the wake of this signing.

Devin Thomas, WR, Redskins
Joey Galloway opened Washington’s camp as the starting receiver opposite Santana Moss; not Devin Thomas. Yes, this is the same Galloway guy who did nothing in New England last year. If Thomas doesn’t overtake Galloway soon, it’ll be time to drop him off the late-round sleepers list.

JULY 29

Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, Giants
The NY Daily News cites that Bradshaw was limping around this spring and was limited in minicamp. Bradshaw had three surgeries on his legs (two feet, one ankle) this offseason, so he’s a pretty risky player to draft this summer.

Carson Palmer, QB, Bengals
Amid all of the Terrell Owens hoopla yesterday, I forgot to upgrade Carson Palmer. It’s unclear if Palmer is anywhere close to 100 percent – there are tons of mixed reports about this, so we’ll just have to see during the preseason – but his numbers will undoubtedly see a bump with Owens, Antonio Bryant and Jermaine Gresham upgrading Laveranues Coles, Andre Caldwell and J.P. Foschi respectively.

JULY 28

Antonio Bryant, WR, Bengals
Antonio Bryant’s knee hasn’t healed, prompting the Bengals to sign Terrell Owens. Bryant won’t be placed on the PUP list per reports, but he’ll be relegated to slot duties. His fantasy value is shot.

Terrell Owens, WR, Bengals
Terrell Owens is a Cincinnati Bengal! Has there ever been a more natural player-team fit in the history of the NFL? Owens is usually a trouble-maker and leaves locker rooms ruined in his wake, but if there’s one place where that won’t matter, it’s Cincinnati. Owens proved last year that he can still be productive, so he could have a solid season if Carson Palmer is close to 100 percent. That’s a big if though.

Wes Welker, WR, Patriots
So much for the report that Wes Welker wouldn’t start training camp on the PUP. The stud slot receiver could still come off the list at any moment, but it should certainly let some air out of the tires of the Welker bandwagon. See, this is exactly why I hate breaking the news; all of these sources are crap. Oh, and please conveniently forget that I reported Monday that Jayson Werth allegedly slept with Chase Utley’s wife and has been a douche at strip clubs.

JULY 27

Jerricho Cotchery, WR, Jets
This has nothing to do with training camp. I just watched replays of this past January’s playoff games, and I forgot how much Mark Sanchez relied upon Jerricho Cotchery toward the end of the season. Cotchery – not Braylon Edwards – was Sanchez’s primary target in those contests. He caught six passes for 67 yards against the Bengals; a team-leading three balls for 25 yards versus the Chargers; and five passes for 102 yards at Indianapolis. After the San Diego game, Sanchez beamed when talking about Cotchery, noting how reliable he is.

In his final six games of 2009, including those three playoff contests, Cotchery logged 29 receptions for 327 yards. He’ll never be a big end-zone target and Santonio Holmes will take targets away, but Cotchery should still be a decent PPR receiver this season.

Donald Driver, WR, Packers
More bad news concerning Donald Driver – offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said the following of his 35-year-old receiver: “We have to see what happens to Driver’s knee when he comes back. I haven’t seen him do anything since Jan. 10.” Driver’s two offseason knee surgeries make him undraftable until Round 13.

JULY 26

Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys
More good news for Dez Bryant – per multiple reports, Bryant had a brilliant weekend of training camp. He made numerous one-handed catches near the sideline, beat top corner Mike Jenkins and thrilled observers. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram suggests that it’s only a matter of time before Bryant starts. The bottom line is that you want this guy on your team. Even if he has a slow couple of weeks to start off, he’ll finish really strong this season – just in time for your playoff run.
