2010 Fantasy Football Draft: Real Experts PPR Draft

Aug. 12, 2010.

This is the fourth-annual Bum Phillips Texas BBQ Fantasy Expert Challenge Draft.

Twelve Web sites, including this one and FFToolbox.com, are currently participating in an online draft in which each team has 10 hours to make a pick. As of this writing, we’re in Round 9.

Two things of note: This league starts 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF. Receptions are one point, and passing touchdowns are six points.

I actually won this league in 2007. In 2008, FFToolbox.com prevailed, while I lost in the first round as a No. 5 seed. Last year, I made it to the championship as the No. 2 seed before losing to FantasyStrategies.com.

The rest of this mock will be posted once it’s complete (maybe in a week?) I just wanted to list the first eight rounds to give you an idea as to how the experts are looking at this 2010 fantasy football season.

ROUND 1:

(1) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Chris Johnson RB
(2) WalterFootball.com – Adrian Peterson RB
(3) JunkyardJake.com – Maurice Jones-Drew RB
(4) FantasySportsCentral.com – Ray Rice RB
(5) FFToolbox.com – Andre Johnson WR
(6) FFJungle.com – Frank Gore RB
(7) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Michael Turner RB
(8) FootballJabber.com – Steven Jackson RB
(9) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Jamaal Charles RB
(10) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Larry Fitzgerald WR
(11) FantasyStrategies.com – Randy Moss WR
(12) FantasyIndex.com – Drew Brees QB

ROUND 2:

(1) FantasyIndex.com – Brandon Marshall WR
(2) FantasyStrategies.com – Reggie Wayne WR
(3) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Aaron Rodgers QB
(4) Fantasy Sharks Radio – DeAngelo Williams RB
(5) FootballJabber.com – Peyton Manning QB
(6) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Miles Austin WR
(7) FFJungle.com – Roddy White WR
(8) FFToolbox.com – Calvin Johnson WR
(9) FantasySportsCentral.com – Rashard Mendenhall RB
(10) JunkyardJake.com – Ryan Mathews RB
(11) WalterFootball.com – Shonn Greene RB
(12) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Ryan Grant RB

MY PICKS: Adrian Peterson is my No. 1 running back; he’ll be more involved in the passing game with Chester Taylor gone, and after all of those touches last year.

Shonn Greene won’t be catching any passes this season, but that won’t really matter if he scores 14 or so touchdowns, which I think he’s more than capable of doing.

BEST PICKS: Most of these picks are pretty good. I cringed when Junkyard Jake took Ryan Mathews one spot before me in the second round because I was hoping he’d fall. I also think Calvin Johnson and Rashard Mendenhall provide great value at 2.08 and 2.09, respectively.

WORST PICKS: I’m not crazy about Larry Fitzgerald this year, so I can’t understand why someone would take him in the first round. Fitzgerald has never posted great numbers with Matt Leinart as his quarterback. Sure, Leinart has more experience now, but he’s really struggling in training camp.

I don’t like Reggie Wayne at 2.02 either. I’ve harped about Wayne’s probable decline all summer, so let’s just move on.

ROUND 3:

(1) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Tony Romo QB
(2) WalterFootball.com – Steve Smith WR (Panthers)
(3) JunkyardJake.com – Anquan Boldin WR
(4) FantasySportsCentral.com – Greg Jennings WR
(5) FFToolbox.com – Tom Brady QB
(6) FFJungle.com – Sidney Rice WR
(7) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – DeSean Jackson WR
(8) FootballJabber.com – Marques Colston WR
(9) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Hakeem Nicks WR
(10) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – LeSean McCoy RB
(11) FantasyStrategies.com – Pierre Thomas RB
(12) FantasyIndex.com – Cedric Benson RB

ROUND 4:

(1) FantasyIndex.com – Chris Wells RB
(2) FantasyStrategies.com – Steve Smith WR (Giants)
(3) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Jonathan Stewart RB
(4) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Dallas Clark TE
(5) FootballJabber.com – Chad Ochocinco WR
(6) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Matt Schaub QB
(7) FFJungle.com – Joseph Addai RB
(8) FFToolbox.com – Antonio Gates TE
(9) FantasySportsCentral.com – Michael Crabtree WR
(10) JunkyardJake.com – Matt Forte RB
(11) WalterFootball.com – Dwayne Bowe WR
(12) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Vernon Davis TE

MY PICKS: At this point, I’m going to own Carolina’s Steve Smith in all of my leagues. I’m really not sure why Smith’s ADP is so low this year. He’s still one of the most talented receivers in the game, and all indications are that he’ll be ready by Week 1.

Dwayne Bowe is in great shape and is primed for a big bounce-back season in Charlie Weis’ offense.

BEST PICKS: If I didn’t already have two running backs, I would have considered Pierre Thomas and LeSean McCoy at 3.02. Great picks by Fantasy Strategies and FF Xtreme. I also loved Xtreme’s selection of Jonathan Stewart in Round 4.

WORST PICKS: Chris Wells atop Round 4 of a traditional league? I could buy that. Of a PPR league? Bleh.

As for another fourth-round running back, there’s too much bust potential with Matt Forte to like him at 4.10. Chester Taylor is earning more than Forte, so there will be some sort of timeshare. Plus, Chicago’s offensive line still isn’t any good.

ROUND 5:

(1) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Wes Welker WR
(2) WalterFootball.com – Knowshon Moreno RB
(3) JunkyardJake.com – Jermichael Finley TE
(4) FantasySportsCentral.com – Philip Rivers QB
(5) FFToolbox.com – Felix Jones RB
(6) FFJungle.com – Brent Celek TE
(7) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Jahvid Best RB
(8) FootballJabber.com – Jason Witten TE
(9) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Jay Cutler QB
(10) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Mike Sims-Walker WR
(11) FantasyStrategies.com – Ronnie Brown RB
(12) FantasyIndex.com – Percy Harvin WR

ROUND 6:

(1) FantasyIndex.com – C.J. Spiller RB
(2) FantasyStrategies.com – Hines Ward WR
(3) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Jeremy Maclin WR
(4) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Jerome Harrison RB
(5) FootballJabber.com – Reggie Bush RB
(6) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Johnny Knox WR
(7) FFJungle.com – Donald Driver WR
(8) FFToolbox.com – Mike Wallace WR
(9) FantasySportsCentral.com – Tony Gonzalez TE
(10) JunkyardJake.com – Robert Meachem WR
(11) WalterFootball.com – Santana Moss WR
(12) FantasyFootballNerd.com – T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR

MY PICKS: Knowshon Moreno was going in the second or third round of most leagues before he hurt his hamstring, so getting him here in the fifth provides good value.

I love Santana Moss this year. The best quarterback Moss has ever had at his disposal prior to this season was Chad Pennington, yet despite the trade for Donovan McNabb, Moss’ ADP right now is about the same as it was in the summer of 2009.

BEST PICKS: I made this selection before adjusting my rankings a second time for Knowshon Moreno’s injury. Had I done so afterward, I probably would have selected Felix Jones or Jahvid Best. Nice picks by FFToolbox and FFWhiz there.

I also want to point out that Johnny Knox went in Round 6. That wouldn’t be good value for him in a normal league, but you can bet that if FFWhiz didn’t take him at 6.06, one of the other experts would have done so shortly afterward.

WORST PICKS: I’m not a fan of my own Moreno pick right now, but the one selection I really hate in these two rounds is T.J. Houshmandzadeh. I wouldn’t pick Houshmandzadeh in Round 16; let alone Round 6. He sucks, his quarterbacks stink, and he happens to be recovering from sports hernia surgery. I’ll be shocked if FFNerd doesn’t cut Houshmandzadeh by Week 4.

ROUND 7:

(1) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Pierre Garcon WR
(2) WalterFootball.com – Joe Flacco QB
(3) JunkyardJake.com – Devin Hester WR
(4) FantasySportsCentral.com – Vincent Jackson WR
(5) FFToolbox.com – Marion Barber RB
(6) FFJungle.com – Kevin Kolb QB
(7) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Zach Miller TE
(8) FootballJabber.com – Darren Sproles RB
(9) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Montario Hardesty RB
(10) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Owen Daniels TE
(11) FantasyStrategies.com – Kellen Winslow Jr. TE
(12) FantasyIndex.com – Heath Miller TE

ROUND 8:

(1) FantasyIndex.com – Jabar Gaffney WR
(2) FantasyStrategies.com – Matt Ryan QB
(3) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Justin Forsett RB
(4) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Eli Manning QB
(5) FootballJabber.com – Malcom Floyd WR
(6) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Ahmad Bradshaw RB
(7) FFJungle.com – Santonio Holmes WR
(8) FFToolbox.com – Brandon Jacobs RB
(9) FantasySportsCentral.com – Terrell Owens WR
(10) JunkyardJake.com – Donald Brown RB
(11) WalterFootball.com – Michael Bush RB
(12) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Dez Bryant WR

MY PICKS: Joe Flacco was off to a great start last season before suffering a barrage of injuries that made him struggle down the stretch. With Anquan Boldin, Donte’ Stallworth and the two rookie tight ends joining Derrick Mason, Flacco could have a big year.

With Al Davis no longer calling the shots, Oakland’s starting running back position is wide open for competition. With that in mind, I don’t see how Darren McFadden beats out Michael Bush for the gig. Bush is just way too talented.

BEST PICKS: Interesting that Ahmad Bradshaw goes before Brandon Jacobs. I know Bradshaw gets more receptions, but Jacobs’ touchdowns will add up. Jacobs is an unbelievable value at 8.08.

It’s also interesting that Malcom Floyd was picked after Vincent Jackson. Floyd was a steal.

WORST PICKS: Speaking of Vincent Jackson, why is he going in Round 7? He may not even play until Week 7.

I also don’t really get why Heath Miller went so early. Miller’s the 11th tight end off the board. I doubt anyone’s going to take a backup tight end anytime soon, so Miller could have easily fallen to Round 11 or 12.

ROUND 9:

(1) FantasyFootballNerd.com – Donovan McNabb QB
(2) WalterFootball.com – Brett Favre QB
(3) JunkyardJake.com – Steve Breaston WR
(4) FantasySportsCentral.com – Carson Palmer QB
(5) FFToolbox.com – Jets Defense
(6) FFJungle.com – Ricky Williams RB
(7) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Mike Williams WR
(8) FootballJabber.com – Lee Evans WR
(9) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Braylon Edwards WR
(10) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Demaryius Thomas WR
(11) FantasyStrategies.com – Fred Jackson RB
(12) FantasyIndex.com – Ben Roethlisberger QB

ROUND 10:

(1) FantasyIndex.com – Chris Chambers WR
(2) FantasyStrategies.com – Clinton Portis RB
(3) FantasyFootballXtreme.com – Visanthe Shiancoe TE
(4) Fantasy Sharks Radio – Kenny Britt WR
(5) FootballJabber.com – Tim Hightower RB
(6) FantasyFootballWhiz.com – Arian Foster RB
(7) FFJungle.com –
(8) FFToolbox.com – Brandon Jacobs RB
(9) FantasySportsCentral.com – Terrell Owens WR
(10) JunkyardJake.com – Donald Brown RB
(11) WalterFootball.com – Michael Bush RB
(12) FantasyFootballNerd.com – On The Clock
