2010 Fantasy Football Rankings: Kickers

These 2010 Fantasy Football Kickers Rankings will be updated often throughout the summer, so make sure you check back from time to time. Also, be sure to check out my other 2010 Fantasy Football articles, which will include sleepers, busts, tons of 2010 Fantasy Football mock drafts and other material.

Updated 6/10

  1. Nate Kaeding, K, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Nate Kaeding may choke like a dog in the playoffs, but he’s still a great fantasy kicker. Kaeding was 32-of-35 last season, including 3-of-4 from 50-plus and 6-of-8 from 40-49. He plays in a great offense and will once again have plenty of field goal opportunities in 2010.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 28-32 FG (2-3 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 48 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 143.

  2. Garrett Hartley, K, Saints. Bye: 10.
Garrett Hartley is the man. He recently became the first kicker to nail three 40-plus field goals in a single Super Bowl. Two weeks before that, he drilled the game-winning kick in the NFC Championship. He has never made a 50-yarder in his career, but he’s really reliable from 49 in, and kicks for a prolific offense.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 28-33 FG (0-1 from 50+; 9-11 from 40-49). 52 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 143.

  3. David Akers, K, Eagles. Bye: 8.
David Akers was 32-of-37 in 2009, and 65-of-76 the past two seasons. He gets plenty of field goal and extra point opportunities in Philadelphia’s great offense, so he’s one of the top fantasy kickers.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 29-35 FG (1-3 from 50+; 9-11 from 40-49). 45 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 141.

  4. Mason Crosby, K, Packers. Bye: 10.
Mason Crosby has never hit 80 percent of his field goals in any season, which is a shame because he plays in such a great offense. Despite all of his misses, however, he’s still a great fantasy kicker.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 28-36 FG (3-6 from 50+; 6-9 from 40-49). 46 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 140.

  5. Stephen Gostkowski, K, Patriots. Bye: 5.
Stephen Gostkowski’s field-goal percentages the past three years: 87.5, 90.0, 83.9. New England’s high-octane offense gives him tons of opportunities.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 28-32 FG (2-3 from 50+; 8-10 from 40-49). 44 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 139.

  6. Rob Bironas, K, Titans. Bye: 9.
A great fantasy kicker, Rob Bironas was 27-of-32 last year, including 5-of-6 from 50-plus. Bironas is 10-of-12 from that distance in the past three years.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 28-33 FG (4-5 from 50+; 10-12 from 40-49). 36 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 136.

  7. David Buehler, K, Cowboys. Bye: 4.
SEPT. 3 UPDATE: The one thing of note for Dallas in the preseason finale was David Buehler’s excellent kicking. Buehler went 4-of-4, nailing tries from 51, 45, 40 and 31. The latter was a clutch kick as time expired. If Buehler can demonstrate this type of accuracy in the regular season, he’ll be a really good fantasy kicker, given Dallas’ struggles in the red zone.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: If there’s any kicker with tons of upside, it’s David Buehler. Buehler has never attempted a field goal in his career, but he has a monstrous leg and was drafted relatively early by Jerry Jones a year ago. He’ll have plenty of kicking opportunities in Dallas this season.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 26-32 FG (1-3 from 50+; 8-11 from 40-49). 49 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 136.

  8. Ryan Longwell, K, Vikings. Bye: 4.
Ryan Longwell has hit at least 80 percent of his field goals in all but two seasons of his career. The last time he failed to do so was 2005. Even better, Longwell is 8-of-8 from 50-plus the past two years. He’s easily one of the top fantasy kickers.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 25-28 FG (2-3 from 50+; 8-9 from 40-49). 46 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 132.

  9. Robbie Gould, K, Bears. Bye: 8.
Robbie Gould has hit at least 85.5 percent of his field goals the past four years. In addition to his excellent accuracy, he was also 2-of-3 from 50-plus in 2009 – which marked the first time he had ever converted a 50-yard field goal.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 26-30 FG (2-3 from 50+; 9-11 from 40-49). 42 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 132.

  10. Dan Carpenter, K, Dolphins. Bye: 5.
Dan Carpenter has been great for the Dolphins, nailing 21-of-25 field goals in 2008 and 25-of-28 in 2009. In the two years combined, Carpenter is 2-of-3 from 50-plus and 17-of-22 from 40-49 (8-of-9 in 2009). Miami has an improved offense, so Carpenter will have more opportunities.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 26-30 FG (1-2 from 50+; 9-11 from 40-49). 43 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 131.

  11. Shayne Graham, K, Ravens. Bye: 8.
Shayne Graham will choke in the playoffs, but that’s not a concern in the fantasy realm. What’s important there is that Graham makes his field goals and will have plenty of kicking opportunities in Baltimore’s explosive offense.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 25-30 FG (1-2 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 46 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 128.

  12. Lawrence Tynes, K, Giants. Bye: 8.
Lawrence Tynes is a pretty good kicker in a very solid offense. He’s 7-of-12 from 50-plus in his career. Tynes will have plenty of opportunities to put up lots of points for you.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 25-30 FG (2-3 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 45 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 128.

  13. Neil Rackers, K, Texans. Bye: 7.
Kris Brown repeatedly choked in the clutch, cost the Texans a pair of victories last year and nailed just 70 percent of his field goals, so Houston went out and signed Neil Rackers, who was 16-of-17 in 2009.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 25-30 FG (2-4 from 50+; 8-10 from 40-49). 41 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 127.

  14. Sebastian Janikowski, K, Raiders. Bye: 10.
Sebastian Janikowski has done a great job staying sober the past two years, nailing 24-of-30 kicks in 2008 and 26-of-29 in 2009. Janikowski is a combined 9-of-15 from 50-plus in that span. With an improved offense, he’ll have more field goals and extra points to attempt.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 26-31 FG (4-7 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 33 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 125.

  15. Adam Vinatieri, K, Colts. Bye: 7.
It’s hard to believe, but Adam Vinatieri’s job is on the line. Undrafted rookie Brett Swenson is expected to really push Vinatieri this season. Keep that in mind if you select Vinatieri before the final round of your fantasy draft.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 22-27 FG (0-1 from 50+; 6-9 from 40-49). 52 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 123.

  16. Jeff Reed, K, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Jeff Reed has hit at least 87 percent of his field goals in the past three seasons, so Pittsburgh fans can forgive the fact that he looks like he walked off the set of Jersey Shore. The downside to Reed is his leg power; he’s 1-of-5 from 50-plus since 2007.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 25-29 FG (0-2 from 50+; 6-7 from 40-49). 37 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 117.

  17. John Kasay, K, Panthers. Bye: 6.
John Kasay turns 41 in October, and he’s 2-of-7 from 50-plus the past two years. Look elsewhere.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 23-29 FG (1-3 from 50+; 6-9 from 40-49). 40 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 116.

  18. Joe Nedney, 49ers. Bye: 9.
Joe Nedney is 37 and plays in a mediocre offense. Avoid.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 24-28 FG (1-2 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 35 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 114.

  19. Rian Lindell, K, Bills. Bye: 6.
The Bills won’t score many points in 2010, and neither will Rian Lindell. Lindell has hit at least 82.9 percent of his field goals in all but one year since 2004, but Buffalo’s offense just isn’t good enough.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 27-32 FG (1-3 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 24 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 113.

  20. Ryan Succop, K, Chiefs. Bye: 4.
Last year’s Mr. Irrelevant turned out to be a pretty damn good kicker. As a rookie, Succop nailed 25-of-29 attempts, including 2-of-5 from 50-plus and 6-of-7 from 40-49. It’s a shame he doesn’t play in a better offense.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 25-30 FG (2-4 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 27 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 111.

  21. Graham Gano, K, Redskins. Bye: 9.
Graham Gano was just 4-of-4 last year, so even though he was highly touted coming out of Florida State, we still don’t really know how he’ll perform.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 23-28 FG (1-2 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 35 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 111.

  22. Jason Hanson, K, Lions. Bye: 7.
A year after going 8-of-8 from 50-plus, Jason Hanson fell back down to Earth, hitting just 1-of-4 from that distance in 2009. Hanson is now 40 years old, so even though Detroit’s offense is better this season, you should look elsewhere for your kicking needs.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 23-30 FG (1-3 from 50+; 5-9 from 40-49). 34 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 109.

  23. Matt Prater, K, Broncos. Bye: 9.
Following a rocky 2008 campaign, Matt Prater bounced back in 2009, nailing 30-of-35 attempts, including 2-of-3 from 50-plus and 8-of-10 from 40-49. Unfortunately, Denver’s offense is just way too mediocre to consider Prater as your fantasy kicker.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 24-29 FG (2-3 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 26 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 107.

  24. Josh Scobee, K, Jaguars. Bye: 9.
Josh Scobee was just 18-of-28 last year, but that’s because he missed five from beyond 50-plus, going 4-of-9 from that distance. Jacksonville’s offense is pretty mediocre, so unless you’re in a really deep league, there’s no use in drafting Scobee.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 21-27 FG (4-6 from 50+; 4-7 from 40-49). 32 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 106.

  25. Nick Folk, K, Jets. Bye: 7.
The good news is that new Jets kicker Nick Folk nailed 90.9 percent of his field goals in 2008. The bad news is that Folk was just 18-of-28 in 2009 and seemingly hasn’t improved at all based on how he has performed in minicamps.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 20-29 FG (1-3 from 50+; 7-11 from 40-49). 40 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 106.

  26. Olindo Mare, K, Seahawks. Bye: 5.
Olindo Mare was 24-of-26 last year, and 48-of-53 the past two seasons. However, he’s 37 and didn’t attempt a single kick beyond 50 in 2009. Plus, he won’t have many opportunities because of Seattle’s stale offense.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 24-27 FG (0-1 from 50+; 5-6 from 40-49). 29 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 105.

  27. Jay Feely, Cardinals. Bye: 6.
With Matt Leinart as his quarterback, Jay Feely won’t have many opportunities to kick field goals and extra points this season.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 23-26 FG (1-1 from 50+; 5-7 from 40-49). 30 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 105.

  28. Phil Dawson, K, Browns. Bye: 8.
Phil Dawson notched 17-of-19 field goals in 11 games last year. He’s a really reliable kicker in real life, but Cleveland’s miserable offense limits his fantasy potential.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 24-28 FG (1-2 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 25 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 105.

  29. Connor Barth, K, Buccaneers. Bye: 4.
Connor Barth hit just 14-of-19 attempts last year, but was 3-of-4 from 50-plus. Barth plays for a young, mediocre offense and there’s no guarantee he’ll keep his job. Avoid.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 21-27 FG (2-5 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 31 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 104.

  30. Josh Brown, K, Rams. Bye: 9.
St. Louis’ offense was so stale last year that Josh Brown attempted only 24 field goals and 16 extra points. Things won’t be much better in 2010. However, it’s worth noting that Brown was 6-of-7 from 50-plus last season.

    Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 21-25 FG (5-6 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 20 XP.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 98.
