Drew Allar Prospect Preview
By Charlie Campbell
Career Recap:
Allar flashed some ability as a freshman in 2022 while serving as the backup quarterback for Penn State. In 2023, Allar took over as the starter and had an impressive debut, completing 60 percent of his passes for 2,631 yards with 25 touchdowns and only two interceptions. In 2024, Allar completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,327 yards with 24 touchdowns passing, six rushing scores, and eight interceptions while helping the Nittany Lions reach the college football playoff. Allar had some gritty performances late in the season, but he was wise to return and continue to develop before moving on to the NFL.
2025 Season Outlook:
Allar has a lot of easy games early in the season to get off to a good start, but then he will be challenged by some better opponents. The best games to see him will include against Oregon (Sep. 27), versus Ohio State (Nov. 1), and taking on Indiana (Nov. 8).
Prospect Summary:
There is no doubt that Allar has NFL talent and the skill set to be a starter at the next level. Allar is tall with a thick build and a little bit of athleticism to move in the pocket. While he wonât be a running threat at the pro level, Allar could be a dangerous pocket passer. He has a good size and pocket presence to hang tough in the face of the rush. Allar also does a nice job of manipulating that pocket and keeping his eyes downfield while he climbs or rolls to the side. With his size and skill set, Allar has the look of a pro starter.
Allar definitely has NFL arm talent. He has a powerful arm that can fire missiles into tight windows, and his quick release with ball velocity allows him to zip passes past coverage and into his receiver despite a lack of separation. Allar has plenty of arm to push the ball vertically downfield and can drill the deep-out routes without any issue. Allar flashes accuracy, but he is inconsistent. Occasionally, Allar will have some passes off the mark, and he needs to get better at throwing the ball with precision in the short to intermediate part of the field.
For the NFL, there are areas that Allar needs to improve. The first point of emphasis will be field vision. Allar needs to improve on moving his eyes and working through his progressions. He locks onto his primary read too often, but that isnât all his fault, as his offense runs a lot of plays with a quick pass after the ball is snapped. Because of this emphasis on throwing to the primary read, Allar will also force some throws into coverage. Allar gets confused and tricked by coverage at times, so that is something he will need to get better at identifying for the next level. Allarâs feet will need work, as he does not follow through on many throws. While he can move around some, Allar will never be a true running threat in the NFL.
The talent is there for Allar to be a pro starter, but he does need coaching and development to get there. Allar needs to show improvement in his field vision and decision-making in 2025. He also needs to carry his team to wins against tough opponents and show that he can put the team on his back and push them to win games. Penn State has talent around him, so there is no excuses for Allar in 2025.
2026 NFL Draft Expectations:
Entering the 2025 season, Allar looks like he has early-round potential for the 2025 NFL Draft.
