2013 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of Aug. 26
SEPT. 4
DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans
DeAndre Hopkins has been medically cleared to play after passing his concussion tests. It took him a while to get the green light, so this is definitely a concern because another concussion could knock him out for a while. In the meantime, however, he’ll be on the field, so that’s good news.
Chris Ivory, RB, Jets
Chris Ivory is No. 2 on the Jets’ depth chart. While these things are always fluid, Ivory has been playing behind Bilal Powell in every preseason game. There are still those who believe Ivory is the favorite to start. Make sure you’re not one of them at your fantasy draft.
Bilal Powell, RB, Jets
Bilal Powell has been named the Jets’ starting running back. He’s a RB3 at best, but is worth taking late in your fantasy draft.
SEPT. 3
Le’Veon Bell, RB, Steelers
Le’Veon Bell expects himself to be back in Week 2. This might be typical player arrogance, but it’s enough to bump him up my fantasy rankings.
Santonio Holmes, WR, Jets
Santonio Holmes has a shot to play in Week 1. It’s
Isaac Redman, RB, Steelers
It sounds like Le’Veon Bell will return earlier than expected.
SEPT. 1
Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Steelers
I’m not exactly sure why the Steelers released the most talented, healthy running back on their roster, but Jonathan Dwyer is gone.
Isaac Redman, RB, Steelers
Jonathan Dwyer was cut. Le’Veon Bell is out until who-knows-when. This leaves Isaac Redman as the primary running back in Pittsburgh. Redman is not talented at all, so I wouldn’t get too excited about him, but the fact remains that he’s a starting NFL back.
AUG. 31
Brent Celek, TE, Eagles
James Casey has been injured, while Zach Ertz has dropped too many passes. It appears as though Brent Celek will have a somewhat large role in Philadelphia’s offense.
Rob Gronkowski, TE, Patriots
Rob Gronkowski will not go on the PUP list, which is obviously promising. He’s definitely worth picking in Round 6, but I wouldn’t take him beforehand because he could easily re-injure himself.
AUG. 30
Andre Brown, RB, Giants
It turns out that Andre Brown will only be out for 4-6 weeks. Still, he may not be in playing shape until the end of October. There’s no reason to draft him in normal 12-man leagues.
Arian Foster, RB, Texans
Arian Foster will not receive a full workload in the season opener against the Chargers. This has been obvious, but head coach Gary Kubiak came out and said it Friday. Avoid Foster in the first round.
DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans
DeAndre Hopkins still hasn’t passed tests for a concussion he suffered on Aug. 17. Hopkins had a severe concussion in college as well, so this is starting to look like a major issue.
AUG. 29
Brandon Marshall, WR, Bears
Updating yesterday’s story, Brandon Marshall said that he’ll play in the season opener. It’s unclear if he’s 100 percent or not, but I’d still draft him late in the second round.
Bilal Powell, RB, Jets
Bilal Powell is having issues pass protecting, according to ESPN New York. This is discouraging, as Powell is the favorite for early-down work. This ruins Powell’s upside, though he’s still worth picking in Rounds 11-13.
AUG. 28
Robert Griffin, QB, Redskins
Adam Schefter reported that Robert Griffin will start against the Eagles in the season opener. This was expected, but it’s just confirmation that you can safely draft Griffin in Rounds 4-6. Griffin still presents the greatest injury risk among the 12 starting-caliber fantasy quarterbacks this year, but he also has the most upside. If you select him, make sure you have a capable backup.
Brandon Marshall, WR, Bears
Brandon Marshall has taken a 4-day absence for a follow-up appointment for his offseason hip surgery. Marshall also sniped at the Bears, complaining that they haven’t taken his injury seriously. This is a weird situation, but I’m not going to move Marshall down all that much. It is something to monitor though.
Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos
More good news for those who were wise enough to grab Knowshon Moreno toward the end of their drafts. ESPN reported Wednesday that Moreno has been receiving “premium snaps with the starters of late.” Moreno is the most reliable of all the Denver running backs, so he’ll get all of the important touches.
AUG. 27
Dwayne Allen, TE, Colts
Dwayne Allen has been out for nearly three weeks with a foot problem, but he’s now expected to play Week 1. Given that Coby Fleener has looked terrible this preseason, Allen is shaping up to be a TE2 with upside. It helps that Allen is a much better blocker than Fleener.
Kenny Britt, WR, Titans
The Titans planned to use Kenny Britt in the preseason finale, but they’re opting to keep him sidelined because of swelling in his knee. Britt just can’t seem to get over his knee problems.
Eddie Lacy, RB, Packers
Forget about DuJuan Harris; he’s been placed on injured reserve with a knee. Given Johnathan Franklin’s struggles, Eddie Lacy is now guaranteed to be the top running back on Green Bay’s depth chart. Draft him confidently as an RB2.
Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers
Jonathan Stewart has been placed on the PUP list. There’s no point in drafting him unless you’re in a 20-team league or something.
Nate Washington, WR, Titans
With Kenny Britt dealing with knee issues and Kendall Wright recovering from his own injury, this is a friendly reminder that Jake Locker has thrown to Nate Washington more than anyone else this preseason. Grab Washington as a sleeper late in your draft.
AUG. 26
Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Colts
Darrius Heyward-Bey’s confidence is “skyrocketing” according to head coach Chuck Pagano. Heyward-Bey had major issues with drops (as usual) early in camp, but he’s been very sharp lately to the point that he can be drafted late as someone with upside.
Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos
Montee Ball has been promoted to the No. 1 running back. That’s fine, but Peyton Manning will trust Knowshon Moreno most in pass protection. Whether it’s Ball or Moreno though, Ronnie Hillman appears to be out of the picture. The team simply doesn’t have any faith that he can hold on to the football.
Rob Housler, TE, Cardinals
Rob Housler suffered a high ankle sprain and will be out for several weeks. There aren’t many players who have been more disappointing than Housler this preseason. Avoid him in all formats.
Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Cardinals
Rashard Mendenhall appears to be good to go for Week 1, so why the stock down? Mendenhall reportedly has some “looseness” in his knee, whatever the hell that means. Mendenhall is a very poor bet to last 16 games, so avoid him in your draft.
