2015 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Weeks of July 27
Aug. 2
Melvin Gordon, RB, Chargers
Melvin Gordon has reportedly had issues with pass protection thus far in training camp. This won’t prevent the Chargers from using Gordon on early downs, but he won’t be seen on third downs and in 2-minute situations, meaning his reception total won’t be very high.
Kevin White, WR, Bears
Kevin White has been placed on the active/PUP list. While White could return for the season opener, he’s losing valuable practice time right now. This is especially significant, given how reluctant John Fox is when it comes to trusting rookies.
Aug. 1
Isaiah Crowell, RB, Browns
Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West have been splitting first-team reps in training camp. Duke Johnson figures to be in the mix as well. Crowell is the most talented back on Cleveland’s roster, but things will remain the same – the rotation will be too sporadic to completely figure out. I wouldn’t mind taking any Cleveland runner in the later rounds, but avoid them in the middle frames.
Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers
Vernon Davis told the media that he’s feeling “more explosive” than he did during his disappointing 2014 campaign. Davis is an obvious buy-low candidate, but given that he’s now 31, he could be dealing with a sharp decline.
Aaron Dobson, WR, Patriots
Bill Belichick praised Aaron Dobson on Friday, telling the media that his young receiver reported to training camp in terrific shape. Dobson was hurt last year and spent some time in Belichick’s doghouse. It looks like he’s ready to turn things around.
Trent Richardson, RB, Raiders
Trent Richardson has been placed on the inactive list; he either has an undisclosed injury, or he’s out of shape and failed his conditioning test as a consequence. Either way, Richardson should be ignored in all leagues.
July 31
Devonta Freeman, RB, Falcons
Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN wrote that Devonta Freeman is the “right” fit for the Falcons’ scheme. Russini covered the Redskins, so she’s familiar with Kyle Shanahan. Freeman isn’t very good, but he might get the majority of the workload despite the fact that Tevin Coleman has been going earlier in fantasy mock drafts.
Darren McFadden, RB, Cowboys
Darren McFadden is missing time with a hamstring injury. McFadden went with a new workout regimen last offseason that prevented him from getting hurt. He must be back to his lethargic ways. Avoid him in fantasy drafts.
Breshad Perriman, WR, Ravens
Breshad Perriman was being used as a first-string receiver at the beginning of training camp. Perriman was considered raw entering the 2015 NFL Draft, but he has enjoyed a positive offseason thus far.
July 30
Carlos Hyde, RB, 49ers
Carlos Hyde, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, will be part of a running back rotation involving two or three other players. Hyde’s appeal was that he would be getting all of the carries in the wake of Frank Gore’s departure, but it sounds like he’ll be sharing too much of a workload.
Adrian Peterson, RB, Vikings
Adrian Peterson told the media that he didn’t feel very explosive at the beginning of training camp. Peterson is an arrogant player who also told the media earlier that he planned to rush for 2,500 this season, so this admission is significant. Peterson turned 30 this offseason, so he’s a risky choice in the top half of the first round. Then again, there aren’t many appealing options this year.
Joseph Randle, RB, Cowboys
Jerry Jones called Joseph Randle his “No. 1 back.” There’s been speculation that the Cowboys could bring in Chris Johnson, but it seems as though Randle will be the starter in Week 1. Randle could have a big year behind one of the league’s best offensive lines.
July 29
Le’Veon Bell, RB, Steelers
Le’Veon Bell’s three-game suspension has been reduced to two contests. This is obviously great news, as it once again puts him in consideration to be the No. 1 overall pick in standard leagues. Bell is the unquestionable top option in PPR formats, but if you’re wary of Adrian Peterson, Eddie Lacy and Marshawn Lynch, feel free to take him first overall in regular leagues.
Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for Deflategate has been upheld. Check out my Disaster Grades for my thoughts on how the Patriots will fare without him. As far as fantasy is concerned, this is obviously a major hit to Brady’s stock. He’s just a bottom-end QB1 at best, given that he won’t be available until Week 6.
Lamar Miller, RB, Dolphins
Lamar Miller is going to receive more carries this year, according to head coach Joe Philbin. Miller wasn’t given more than 19 carries in any game in 2014, but it appears as though that will change.
July 28
Martavis Bryant, WR, Steelers
Martavis Bryant has been terrific at the beginning of the Steelers’ training camp, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! He is a strong breakout candidate in his sophomore campaign.
Todd Gurley, RB, Rams
Todd Gurley is now expected to be back prior to the Rams’ Week 6 bye, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. Gurley remains a risk this year, but there’s a chance he’ll be ready to go for the season opener.
