This series of mock draft posts uses the FantasyPros Mock Draft Simulator and will be feature different settings and draft positions to give us a look at how they play out. For this week’s mock draft, I’ll be bringing you a 2QB league draft.
The question with 2QB leagues always boils down to, where do I draft my quarterbacks? I’ve always been a guy who even in 2QB leagues would grab a top running back and then fill in my quarterbacks in Rounds 2 to 5ish. But so far this season, if Andrew Luck or Aaron Rodgers is on the board, I am taking one of them. But after them, I find it hard to take a quarterback in the first round. I feel that tactic is still up for debate, but as long as you grab quarterbacks quickly after the first roudn, you can still be fairly solid there. But don’t wait. I’ve tried it many times, and watching those mid-tier quarterbacks fall away in the second and third rounds can be painful.
I believe the following mock draft went okay, but not great. I’ll go through and give the reasoning behind my picks and look at some picks I wish I would have made and some I’m glad I didn’t.
Settings: 12 teams, Standard Scoring — 2 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, WR/RB/TE, D/ST, 7 BN
Round 6:
6.1 T.J. Yeldon, JAC
6.2 Andre Ellington, ARI
6.3 Julian Edelman, NE
6.4 Greg Olsen, CAR
6.5 Jay Cutler, CHI
6.6 Todd Gurley, STL
6.7 Brandon Marshall, NYJ
6.8 Keenan Allen, SD
6.9 Allen Robinson, JAC
6.10 DeSean Jackson, WAS
6.11 Vincent Jackson, TB
6.12 Golden Tate, DET
Keenan Allen is a value pick at the moment due to his down 2014 season. He had trouble with injuries and finding the end zone that I’m going to disregard since I expect a nice turnaround back to his rookie-season numbers. Allen had an average of 8.6 targets and 5.5 receptions per game, and with Antonio Gates gone to start the first four games, Allen’s red-zone targets should get a decent bump.
Round 7:
7.1 Andy Dalton, CIN
7.2 Amari Cooper, OAK
7.3 Joique Bell, DET
7.4 Travis Kelce, KC
7.5 LeGarrette Blount, NE
7.6 Sammy Watkins, BUF
7.7 Martellus Bennett, CHI
7.8 Giovani Bernard, CIN
7.9 Carson Palmer, ARI
7.10 Rashad Jennings, NYG
7.11 Jeremy Maclin, KC
7.12 Alex Smith, KC
I’m extremely high on LeGarrette Blount this season. The Patriots let both Steven Ridley and Shane Vereen go this offseason, and that leaves Blount, Jonas Gray, James White and Brandon Bolden running the ball for New England. We’ve always had a pretty big problem trying to pick the running back who would get most of the Patriots’ rushing attempts. That isn’t going to completely change, but Blount has been successful scoring touchdowns for Belichick, with the team running the ball 28 times for 12 scores from inside the opponent’s five-yard line last season. Those were both league highs, and Blount has 14 rushing touchdowns in his last 12 games with the Patriots (including playoffs). He will miss the first game due to suspension, which really hurts since I already have Le’Veon Bell, Blount’s blunt-mate, so I’ll be hurting Week 1 (if this were a real draft which it wasn’t, haha suckers!).
Round 8:
8.1 Eric Decker, NYJ
8.2 Jameis Winston, TB
8.3 Nelson Agholor, PHI
8.4 Joseph Randle, DAL
8.5 Michael Floyd, ARI
8.6 Roddy White, ATL
8.7 Doug Martin, TB
8.8 Jarvis Landry, MIA
8.9 Isaiah Crowell, CLE
8.10 Robert Griffin, WAS
8.11 Bishop Sankey, TEN
8.12 Jordan Cameron, MIA
I love me some Jarvis Landry this season. You can check out why here. But, I really did want Jameis Winston here since I felt like he was my last hope for an upside quarterback backup. Say that 50 times fast. Unfortunately, Winston went before me, and I again waited on picking a backup. (Hint: I waited too long).
Round 9:
9.1 Mike Wallace, MIN
9.2 Antonio Gates, SD
9.3 Kevin White, CHI
9.4 Tevin Coleman, ATL
9.5 Ameer Abdullah, DET
9.6 Zach Ertz, PHI
9.7 Brandon LaFell, NE
9.8 Delanie Walker, TEN
9.9 Larry Fitzgerald, ARI
9.10 Breshad Perriman, BAL
9.11 Jason Witten, DAL
9.12 Julius Thomas, JAC
Most of “my guys” are PPR guys as well. PPR receivers usually transfer fairly well into standard scoring, but running backs are a different story. If you aren’t getting points for a reception, and all your back does is catch passes and once in a blue moon gets into the end zone, well, you’re hurting. So when I picked Ameer Abdullah here, I did worry that he would be a receiving back who can’t get into the end zone. And yes, that may happen, but Abdullah looks like the real deal to me. Joique Bell hasn’t topped four yards per carry over the last two seasons, and even though he’ll be locked in as the short-yardage back, I believe Abdullah can beat him out for snaps as the season goes on. It’s a risky pick in standard scoring, but I don’t mind some risk.
Round 10:
10.1 Chris Ivory, NYJ
10.2 Derek Carr, OAK
10.3 Charles Sims, TB
10.4 Marques Colston, NO
10.5 Shane Vereen, NYG
10.6 Tre Mason, STL
10.7 Torrey Smith, SF
10.8 Josh Hill, NO
10.9 Duke Johnson, CLE
10.10 Charles Johnson, MIN
10.11 Pierre Garcon, WAS
10.12 Nick Foles, STL
Will Josh Hill put numbers up that even sniff what Jimmy Graham has done as a Saint? No. He will not. But you also couldn’t have drafted Graham anywhere near the 10th round. The worry right now is that Ben Watson will come out of training camp as the starter. I would like to see a little more of this battle before going all-in on Hill.
Looking back on this draft, I probably should have grabbed Chris Ivory over Abdullah in standard scoring. Ivory finished last season as the 19th-ranked fantasy running back in non-PPR and is just 27 with 636 total carries in his five seasons. He’s not going to get 260 carries, 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns, but he is the best pure runner on the team, and another top-20 finish is very much in the cards for him.
