2010 Fantasy Football Rankings: Running Backs 41-60

These 2010 Fantasy Football Running Backs Rankings will be updated often throughout the summer, so make sure you check back from time to time. Also, be sure to check out my other 2010 Fantasy Football articles, which will include sleepers, busts, tons of 2010 Fantasy Football mock drafts and other material.

MISSING

  1. Justin Forsett, RB, Seahawks. Bye: 5.
SEPT. 6 UPDATE: Julius Jones was cut, which opens the door for Justin Forsett to receive more touches. I still think Leon Washington will handle the ball more, but Forsett gets a bump in my rankings.

AUG. 22 UPDATE: Justin Forsett started the second preseason game. He couldn’t get anything against Green Bay’s starters, gaining 13 yards on five attempts. Forsett was outshined by Leon Washington, who took a hit for the first time since getting hurt last November. Washington displayed some speed and explosion, totaling 19 yards and a score on four carries. It seems like Pete Carroll will employ the same strategy he utilized at USC – a plethora of running backs will share the touches, but no one will really be the featured back.

AUG. 15 UPDATE: It was depressing to see Julius Jones start the preseason opener. Jones had a couple of nice runs, but was pretty mediocre overall. He gained 13 yards on five carries and also dropped a pass. Justin Forsett, playing exclusively with the second team, gained 17 rushing yards on seven attempts to go along with a 30-yard reception. Forsett should see much more action than Jones, but Seattle head coaches clearly don’t understand simple logic.

AUG. 1 UPDATE: Leon Washington practiced Saturday, which is not good news for Justin Forsett. If healthy, Washington will eat into Forsett’s touches.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: In the wake of LenDale White’s mysterious release, Justin Forsett is the favorite to lead Seattle’s running backs in touches. Forsett is a really speedy and elusive running back, and he has been so good in minicamp that Pete Carroll told the media that he plans to get the ball into Forsett’s hands as much as possible.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 625 rushing yards. 37 catches. 310 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 160.

  2. Donald Brown, RB, Colts. Bye: 7.
AUG. 20 UPDATE: Donald Brown looked a lot better in the Toronto preseason contest than he did in the exhibition opener. He gained 23 yards on four carries to go along with a 7-yard reception. His only blemish of the night was a dropped pass.

AUG. 16 UPDATE: Donald Brown played exclusively with the second team in the preseason opener. His performance was abysmal, as he had minus-4 yards on his five attempts.

AUG. 11 UPDATE: Peyton Manning told the media Tuesday that he expects Donald Brown to be a big contributor this season. Brown was recently featured in my 2010 Fantasy Football Buy Low article.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Wasn’t Joseph Addai supposed to be the injury-prone player? That was one frustrating thing that happened last year – the wrong running back got hurt. Brown looked like he was picking up more touches each week before suffering an injury in the St. Louis game. Brown came back later in the season, but was never a big part of the offense (he had five touches in the Super Bowl).

Brown will likely become a larger part of the offense in his sophomore campaign, so he’s definitely worth owning. And who knows, maybe Addai will live up to his fragile reputation.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 625 rushing yards. 25 catches. 225 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 115.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 140.

  3. Thomas Jones, RB, Chiefs. Bye: 4.
Though Thomas Jones rushed for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns last year, he didn’t really look good doing it. Jones’ numbers were vastly inflated by his incredible offensive line. Shonn Greene was a much better runner, as we all saw in the playoffs.

Jones is now 32 and has more than 2,100 career carries on his resume. He won’t have nearly as much success behind Kansas City’s pedestrian offensive front. That said, his workload will be primarily at the goal line, so he’ll score some touchdowns. He’s a decent handcuff.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 675 rushing yards. 8 catches. 45 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 114.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 122.

  4. Tim Hightower, RB, Cardinals. Bye: 6.
AUG. 30 UPDATE: I can’t believe I’m writing this even though I watched it, but Tim Hightower actually ran better than Chris Wells in Arizona’s third preseason game. Hightower showed more quickness and broke tackles, rushing for 62 yards on eight carries. Wells had just 14 yards on eight attempts.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Tim Hightower rushed for 598 yards and eight touchdowns, and also caught 63 balls for 428 receiving yards last year. Sounds like a solid PPR flex running back. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Twelve of Hightower’s 63 receptions came in Week 1. Of his eight scores, five occurred between Weeks 1-8. Furthermore, check out Hightower’s rushing attempts from Week 13 on: 6, 2, 6, 10, 6, 7, 6. His role clearly diminished toward the end of the season.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 550 rushing yards. 45 catches. 315 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 110.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 155.

  5. Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders. Bye: 10.
Darren McFadden is injury-prone and goes down on first contact. His 6-year, $60 million contract will probably mean that he’ll have first dibs on the every-down running back gig, but I wouldn’t count on him hanging on to it for that long. Ideally, Michael Bush would carry the ball 250-plus times and McFadden would be a solid third-down back, but that may not be the case because of the salary structure.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 500 rushing yards. 38 catches. 430 receiving yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 105.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 143.

  6. Fred Taylor, RB, Patriots. Bye: 5.
AUG. 20 UPDATE: Fred Taylor looked like he was 27 years old again against the Falcons. Running quickly and spryly, Taylor gained 54 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries. He also had a 13-yard gain wiped out because of a holding penalty. It would not be surprising at all if Taylor paced the Patriots in carries this season. New England’s backfield is still a situation you should avoid, but taking a late-round flier on Taylor wouldn’t be a bad idea.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Once again, it’s unclear what Bill Belichick plans to do with his mediocre backfield. For all we know, Fred Taylor may receive 150 carries. Taylor did have 105 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Falcons in Week 3 last season, but suffered an injury the week after.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 675 rushing yards. 5 catches. 35 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 101.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 106.

  7. Chester Taylor, RB, Bears. Bye: 8.
Chester Taylor is paid more than Matt Forte, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he takes over the starting job. The more likely scenario, as admitted by Taylor and the coaching staff, is that he’ll be the third-down back and catch a ton of passes, thanks to Mike Martz. Keep in mind though that Taylor averaged just 3.6 yards per carry behind Minnesota’s offensive line.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 440 rushing yards. 45 catches. 390 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 101.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 146.

  8. Laurence Maroney, RB, Patriots. Bye: 5.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: For the second preseason game in a row, Laurence Maroney didn’t receive a single carry. It was all Sammy Morris and BenJarvus Green-Ellis against the Rams, and neither had much success (12 and 13 yards respectively on five carries each). Fred Taylor remains the top running back on the Patriots, but only by default.

AUG. 20 UPDATE: Laurence Maroney didn’t play against the Falcons. Fred Taylor saw most of the carries and actually looked really impressive.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: The Patriots for some reason didn’t draft a running back, so it’s the usual suspects again: Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk. Maroney scored nine touchdowns in 2009, but was benched for his fumbling problems in Week 16, and saw only one carry the following two games. Bill Belichick was fed up with Maroney at the time, but maybe he’ll be more confident that his running back spent the offseason working on his issues. If so, Maroney will be the favorite to start, which could mean double-digit touchdowns if he holds on to the ball (and his job).

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 500 rushing yards. 12 catches. 80 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 100.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 112.

  9. Fred Jackson, RB, Bills. Bye: 6.
AUG. 14 UPDATE: Fred Jackson suffered hand and ankle injuries after gaining 16 yards on four carries in the preseason opener. Marshawn Lynch entered the lineup, and he too had to leave with an ankle. I don’t really care about Lynch, but Jackson is in danger of missing the season opener because of a possible hand fracture, per Gailey.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: It appears as though C.J. Spiller will be seeing tons of action in the slot, which means Fred Jackson should still be the primary ball-carrier. I’ll feel a lot better about Jackson if the Bills part ways with Marshawn Lynch, which would mean that Jackson would see all the rare goal-line opportunities. If Lynch isn’t part of the equation – and I don’t think he will be – Jackson should be able to approach 200 or so carries, but won’t come close to matching last year’s reception total of 46.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 650 rushing yards. 20 catches. 160 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 99.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 119.

  10. Correll Buckhalter, RB, Broncos. Bye: 9.
Correll Buckhalter will receive about a third of Denver’s carries early on, but who knows how long he’ll last at 32 years old? The Broncos’ offense just isn’t good enough to warrant drafting a handcuff running back unless you’re in a league with more than 12 teams.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 550 rushing yards. 24 catches. 250 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 98.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 122.

  11. Steve Slaton, RB, Texans. Bye: 7.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: Steve Slaton will get more looks with Ben Tate out for the year, but Arian Foster will receive most of the touches; Gary Kubiak doesn’t trust Slaton to hang on to the football.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Steve Slaton was a huge bust last year. His fumbling issues got him benched, and a neck injury caused him to miss the final month of the regular season. Slaton had neck surgery this offseason, and projects as nothing more than a third-down back going forward.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 475 rushing yards. 28 catches. 225 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 94.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 120.

  12. Bernard Scott, RB, Bengals. Bye: 6.
JUNE 30 UPDATE: With Cedric Benson possibly headed for suspension, the player to benefit from this will be Bernard Scott. Scott, a second-year back, was already lauded during minicamps for his offseason work, prompting running backs coach Jim Anderson to indicate that he would see more action on offense. In the wake of Benson’s legal issues, the talented Scott, who rushed for 206 yards on 39 carries in his two starts last season, is a serious candidate to blow up in 2010 if he starts hot.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: The handcuff for Cedric Benson if you’re into that sort of thing. Scott rushed for 119 yards on 21 carries at Oakland and 87 yards on 18 attempts against the Browns in his two starts last year.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 600 rushing yards. 12 catches. 100 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 88.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 100.

  13. James Starks, RB, Packers. Bye: 10.
I really liked James Starks as a prospect coming out of Buffalo. He’s great at catching the ball out of the backfield and should take over for Brandon Jackson as Green Bay’s third-down back immediately. In two years, Starks could be the starter; Ryan Grant’s contract expires after the 2011 season, and he’ll be 29 when that happens. For now, Starks is a pretty good handcuff.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 390 rushing yards. 33 catches. 300 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 87.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 120.

  14. Javon Ringer, RB, Titans. Bye: 9.
The handcuff you want for Chris Johnson. If Johnson gets hurt – which is likely because he was the running back to lead the NFL in rushing attempts – Ringer should be able to step in and compile great fantasy numbers. Ringer is a skilled runner who will have one of the top offensive lines in the NFL blocking for him.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 540 rushing yards. 15 catches. 130 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 85.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 100.

  15. Kevin Faulk, RB, Patriots. Bye: 5.
It seems like Kevin Faulk has been New England’s third-down back for the past 30 years. He’ll once again catch about 40 balls.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 325 rushing yards. 40 catches. 325 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 83.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 123.

  16. Jerious Norwood, RB, Falcons. Bye: 8.
I liked Jerious Norwood as a late-round sleeper last year because I was confident that Michael Turner would get hurt and miss extensive time. Unfortunately, Norwood also suffered an injury and then Jason Snelling emerged, so my whole plan was debaclized. Norwood is a late-round option in really deep PPR leagues, but that’s about it.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 325 rushing yards. 30 catches. 290 receiving yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 73.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 103.

  17. Toby Gerhart, RB, Vikings. Bye: 4.
Toby Gerhart is worth picking up as a handcuff for Adrian Peterson. If Peterson goes down, Gerhart will carry the load in Minnesota’s impressive offense.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 425 rushing yards. 12 catches. 110 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 71.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 83.

  18. Brian Westbrook, RB, 49ers. Bye: 9.
I gave my take on the Brian Westbrook signing yesterday, but I absent-mindedly forgot to add him to my 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings. Well, here he is. Westbrook should be good for about 100 touches this year, and he could have much more if Frank Gore gets hurt. He’s worth a late-round flier in PPR formats.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 325 rushing yards. 25 catches. 200 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 70.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 95.

  19. Jason Snelling, RB, Falcons. Bye: 8.
The handcuff you want for Michael Turner – if you’re into that sort of thing.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 280 rushing yards. 20 catches. 180 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 70.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 90.

  20. Kareem Huggins, RB, Buccaneers. Bye: 4.
Raheem Morris isn’t pleased with Derrick Ward’s 1.8 yards-per-carry average this preseason. He has demoted Derrick Ward to the No. 3 running back behind second-year runner Kareem Huggins.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 400 rushing yards. 15 catches. 125 receiving yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 64.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 79.

  21. Larry Johnson, RB, Redskins. Bye: 9.
Clinton Portis saw all of the carries in Preseason Week 1. The plan was for Larry Johnson to get all of the early work against the Ravens. Said Johnson before the game, “It’s my turn.”

Fail. Johnson gained four yards on eight carries, and believe me when I say that those numbers actually are better than how he looked. Johnson dropped a very catchable pass and failed to pick up a blitz that led to a sack. He looked sluggish and lethargic. Quite frankly, I was shocked to see this because most people who cover the Redskins predicted that Johnson would lead the team in carries. Now, I’m not so sure he’s even going to make the final roster.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 375 rushing yards. 8 catches. 60 receiving yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 55.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 63.

  22. Le’Ron McClain, RB, Ravens. Bye: 8.
Le’Ron McClain is a great blocking fullback, but he’ll need an injury to Ray Rice or Willis McGahee to return to fantasy significance.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 225 rushing yards. 15 catches. 90 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 49.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 64.

  23. Willie Parker, RB, Redskins. Bye: 9.
I’m listing Willie Parker here, but I don’t think he’s going to make the team. He lost his one positive trait; he’s no longer “Fast” Willie Parker.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 0 rushing yards. 0 catches. 0 receiving yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.

  24. Ben Tate, RB, Texans. Bye: 7.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: One of my top early-summer sleepers, Ben Tate, suffered a broken ankle at Arizona and looks like he’ll be out for the year. Tate’s injury was ugly; he rolled around on the ground in agony after his foot was twisted around right after a 12-yard run. Tate had to be helped off and he couldn’t put any pressure on his foot.

AUG. 10 UPDATE: Gary Kubiak told reporters that Ben Tate’s play in training camp is “up and down.” Tate missed time in minicamps and consequently might be on the bench when the season kicks off. He has the talent to take over a few weeks in – but Arian Foster could just as easily keep him on the sidelines.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: Michael Lombardi predicts that Ben Tate will win Offensive Rookie of the Year and rush for 1,500 yards in 2010. I think that could happen; with Steve Slaton coming off injury, Tate doesn’t have to share carries with anyone. The Auburn product is a perfect fit in Houston’s offense. Remember all of those instances when the Texans failed to get into the end zone from the 1-yard line? At 220 pounds, Tate will score in those scenarios.

One issue: If Tate fumbles a couple of times, Gary Kubiak will pull him out of the lineup completely. We’ve seen Kubiak’s quick hook before, and it ruined things for all Steve Slaton owners last year.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 0 rushing yards. 0 catches. 0 receiving yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.

  25. Montario Hardesty, RB, Browns. Bye: 8.
Montario Hardesty is out for the year with a torn ACL. Another favorite late-round sleeper of mine bites the dust.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 0 rushing yards. 0 catches. 0 receiving yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.
