2010 Fantasy Football Rankings - San Diego Chargers 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings – San Diego Chargers:

Updated 5/26

  • Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Philip Rivers finished the 2009 season with 4,254 yards, 28 touchdowns and nine interceptions. More importantly was how he played down the stretch – he eclipsed 260 yards in every game between Weeks 12-16. The only concern with Rivers is that Vincent Jackson won’t be available for approximately 2-4 games (suspension), but I don’t think that’s a huge deal.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 4,250 passing yards. 30 passing TDs. 10 INTs. 40 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 280.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (QB Friendly): 382.

  • Ryan Mathews, RB, Chargers. Bye: 10.
As truly awful as LaDainian Tomlinson was last year, he was still a decent fantasy running back because he scored 10 touchdowns.

Even those who don’t like Ryan Mathews as a pro have to acknowledge that he’ll be better than the 2009 version of Tomlinson. Even if he’s not, Mathews will be good for 800 rushing yards and 10-plus touchdowns – and that’s worst-case scenario (barring injury).

Mathews should be able to rush for 1,100-1,200 yards and score around 13 touchdowns. His reception total won’t be that high, however, because of Darren Sproles.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 1,150 rushing yards. 18 catches. 150 receiving yards. 13 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 208.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 226.

  • Darren Sproles, RB, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Darren Sproles will once again be San Diego’s third-down back. He’s a solid flex player in PPR leagues because of his high reception totals, but he’s not nearly as valuable in other formats. Sproles just doesn’t get the carries or the red-zone work.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 380 rushing yards. 52 catches. 590 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 133.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 185.

  • Vincent Jackson, WR, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Vincent Jackson topped 100 receiving yards six times in 2009 en route to finishing with 68 receptions, 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns. Unfortunately, he’s expected to be suspended for 2-4 games in the wake of pleading guilty to driving with a suspended license. If you get off to a 1-3 start because you’re missing your WR2, your chances of making the fantasy playoffs could be compromised.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 1,040 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 146.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 206.

  • Malcom Floyd, WR, Chargers. Bye: 10.
It’s hard to believe that Malcom Floyd has been around since 2004 and is turning 29 in September because he’s just coming on. Floyd notched career-highs in receptions (45) and yards (776) last year, and he’ll be counted on as the No. 1 receiver while Vincent Jackson is serving his 2-4 game suspension. Floyd should be able to post solid numbers this season; this is his contract year.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 49 catches. 830 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 107.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 156.

  • Antonio Gates, TE, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Antonio Gates had yet another great season in 2009, catching 79 balls for 1,157 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s entering his contract year and will likely receive more targets during Vincent Jackson’s 2-4 game suspension.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 83 catches. 1,075 yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 161.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 244.

  • Nate Kaeding, K, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Nate Kaeding may choke like a dog in the playoffs, but he’s still a great fantasy kicker. Kaeding was 32-of-35 last season, including 3-of-4 from 50-plus and 6-of-8 from 40-49. He plays in a great offense and will once again have plenty of field goal opportunities in 2010.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 28-32 FG (2-3 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 48 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 143.

  • San Diego Chargers. Bye: 10.
The Chargers have the offense to blow teams out (and thus force turnovers in the second halves of those games) and they play in a division with two miserable quarterbacks (Kyle Orton, Matt Cassel). Darren Sproles is also a threat to take at least one return to the house. The only question is the pass rush. San Diego had just 35 sacks in 2009, thanks in part to Shawne Merriman’s struggles. Now two years removed from his nasty knee injury, Merriman can’t possibly be worse this season (though there’s a chance he may not be much better).
