2009 Fantasy Football Draft: Experts Version

Aug. 9, 2009.

This is a 2009 Fantasy Football Experts Invitational draft. Twelve Web sites, including this one, FFToolbox.com, RotoWorld and JunkyardJake.com participated in this PPR draft.

Some picks have commentary made by the corresponding Web site.

Go here for 2009 Fantasy Football Experts Draft: Rounds 9-18.

Round 1

  1. FFToolbox.com: Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jaguars
With Fred Taylor now in New England, Maurice Jones-Drew is primed for a career year. Drew will likely surpass 200 carries for the first time in his career, and the results should be impressive. Drew should eclipse 1,000 yards with double digit touchdowns, and should see even more looks as a receiver out of the backfield. In a points per reception league a RB with double digit TD’s and 60 plus catches should be the #1 overall selection, and Jones-Drew is our man with the #1 pick.

  2. WalterFootball.com: Matt Forte, RB, Bears
Matt Forte rushed for 1,238 yards and 12 total touchdowns in 2008. Making him the No. 1 back in PPR leagues, Forte also caught 63 balls for 477 receiving yards. Forte’s YPC (3.9) will skyrocket now that opposing defenses will have to respect Chicago’s passing game.

  3. FootballJabber.com: Adrian Peterson, RB, Vikings
How often do you think that you will hear someone be disappointed to grab Adrian Peterson at the #3 spot this season? The previous two picks of MJD and Matt Forte are exactly as I would have taken them in this point per reception league. I figured…and hoped…one of the two would have fell to me. I guess I will have to “settle” with Adrian Peterson.

  4. MonsterDraft: Steven Jackson, RB, Rams
    No analysis given.

  5. Fantasy Sharks Radio: LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, Chargers
The RBs on the board have too many question markes for a top five pick. Two RB systems are becoming the norm. With Fitz you can pretty much pencil in 1400 yards and 10 TDs. Plus, Arizona has a cakewalk in the fantasy playoffs.

  6. FantasySportsCentral.com: Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Cardinals
I think you’ll see this as a common theme this year. Receivers being taken early and often.

  7. RotoWorld.com: Chris Johnson, RB, Titans
    No analysis given.

  8. JunkyardJake.com: Steve Slaton, RB, Texans
Except for his 4 carry for 7 yard game versus Baltimore last year, Slaton ended up having a very productive and consistent rookie season. He is a bit small for my liking, but his 50 catch potential should be useful in a PPR format.

  9. FantasyIndex.com: Frank Gore, RB, 49ers
    No analysis given.

  10. FFJungle.com: DeAngelo Williams, RB, Panthers
Williams won’t repeat his ’08 numbers, but he should still be quite effective in Carolina’s system.

  11. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Andre Johnson, WR, Texans
Johnson is the #1 WR on my board right now and I am not a fan of the RBs that would be taken here, so I will go with my guy.

  12. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: Michael Turner, RB, Falcons
Due to his touchdown production, The Burner can hang with even the top PPR receivers. I’ll take Turner at 1.12 any day of the week.

Round 2

  1. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: Randy Moss, WR, Patriots
Moss could catch 15-20TDs this year. He has top 5 upside in PPR formats and is by far my number one ranked receiver this year. Steal IMO.

  2. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions
    No analysis given.

  3. FFJungle.com: Reggie Wayne, WR, Colts
I was hoping Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson would fall to me, but since neither did, Wayne becomes the “safe” choice here. He’s as reliable as they come and should provide a nice one-two combination with DeAngelo Williams, especially if he can up his TD total.

  4. FantasyIndex.com: Steve Smith, WR, Panthers
After the two tailbacks I most wanted went just ahead of me in the first, I was concerned it would happen again with wideouts in the 2nd. Fortunately, the two were Calvin and Steve Smith, so it worked out OK. Smith seems underrated to me this year, perhaps because of Delhomme’s playoff meltdown, I dunno. He’s an easy pick for me here.

  5. JunkyardJake.com: Greg Jennings, WR, Packers
Tough choice here, but Jennings seems relatively safe given that he seems to work very well with Aaron Rodgers, and has steadily shown improvement from 45,53 to 80 catches over his 1st three years in the league.

  6. RotoWorld.com: Brian Westbrook, WR, Eagles
    No analysis given.

  7. FantasySportsCentral.com: Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins
Since I took Fitzgerald with my first pick I love that Portis fell this far. No brainer.

  8. Fantasy Sharks Radio: Brandon Jacobs, RB, Giants
    No analysis given.

  9. MonsterDraft: Wes Welker, WR, Patriots
    No analysis given.

  10. FootballJabber.com: Drew Brees, QB, Saints
    Given the talent left.

  11. WalterFootball.com: Roddy White, WR, Falcons
Roddy White could have an even better year in 2009. He’s in his contract season, and Matt Ryan will no longer be a rookie. At 6-0, 208, White will never be a premier end-zone threat, but the yardage could increase, especially with Tony Gonzalez drawing some attention.

  12. FFToolbox.com: Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
Tom Brady was an ironman and a fantasy stud prior to the Week 1 ACL tear last season. Brady should have improved protection as well as Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway, and a talented group of RB’s to work with in 2009. I have no doubt that Brady will be healthy Week 1 and regain his status as the #1 QB in fantasy football in 2009.

Round 3

  1. FFToolbox.com: Anquan Boldin, WR, Cardinals
Anquan Boldin is the #1 WR left on the board, and there is no way I can pick up a quality #1 wide receiver next round almost twenty picks later. Boldin’s injury problems scare me, but the production is still there even if Q misses a few games. 90 plus catches, 1,000 yards and 10+ TD’s is a great pick in the 3rd round.

  2. WalterFootball.com: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos
Some speculate that Josh McDaniels will use a RBBC in Denver this year. You don’t draft someone No. 12 overall to share carries with scrubs like Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan. Knowshon Moreno is a really talented, three-down back who will have the luxury of running behind a great offensive line. Kyle Orton has no arm strength, so he’ll dump it down to Moreno a lot. Moreno is my No. 12 overall player in PPR Leagues, so while some may call this a reach, I think this is a steal (I doubt Moreno will make it back to me if I pass on him.)

  3. FootballJabber.com: Dwayne Bowe, WR, Chiefs
A huge dropoff coming at WR, have to take one now and most signs point to a big year for Bowe.

  4. MonsterDraft: Pierre Thomas, RB, Saints
    No analysis given.

  5. Fantasy Sharks Radio: Brandon Marshall, WR, Broncos
    No analysis given.

  6. FantasySportsCentral.com: Marion Barber, RB, Cowboys
You guys are making this easy for me. Another no brainer.

  7. RotoWorld.com: Marques Colston, WR, Saints
This is the weirdest draft I think I’ve ever been a part of. Marion Barber and Colston fall to the mid-third in a PPR?

  8. JunkyardJake.com: Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins
Ronnie Brown received only 60% of the carries last season, and still produced a respectable 916 rushing yards. Ricky Williams, even at 32 years old, still looks pretty effective, but Brown remains the higher potential player and he will hopefully assume a slightly larger role.

  9. FantasyIndex.com: Terrell Owens, WR, Bills
    No analysis given.

  10. FFJungle.com: Peyton Manning, QB, Colts
    Manning is a no-brainer at pick 34.

  11. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Marshawn Lynch, RB, Bills
    No analysis given.

  12. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: Reggie Bush, RB, Saints
    No analysis given.

Round 4

  1. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: Braylon Edwards, WR, Browns
    No analysis given.

  2. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers
    No analysis given.

  3. FFJungle.com: Jason Witten, TE, Cowboys
If Witten can stay healthy, return to his 2007 form (1,145 yards and seven scores) and reach his average number of receptions the last two years (88), he’s as good as any receiver left on the board. T.O.’s departure should help Witten’s reception numbers stay solid (which is great in a PPR league) and should mean more red-zone targets. Furthermore, he’s my top-rated tight end who most likely won’t be there in 20 picks, so I have to grab him now.

  4. FantasyIndex.com: T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Seahawks
I didn’t set out to build the league’s oldest receiving corps, but that’s how things have worked out so far. Regardless, I think the talent at wideout drops off abruptly around here, and I’m glad to get one of the last true No. 1s left.

  5. JunkyardJake.com: Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders
    No analysis given.

  6. RotoWorld.com: Eddie Royal, WR, Broncos
He’ll lead the NFL in catches this year. The ideal Josh McDaniels player.

  7. FantasySportsCentral.com: Kevin Smith, RB, Lions
    No analysis given.

  8. Fantasy Sharks Radio: Ryan Grant, RB, Packers
    No analysis given.

  9. MonsterDraft: Antonio Gates, TE, Chargers
    No analysis given.

  10. FootballJabber.com: Tony Gonzalez, TE, Falcons
Did not plan on one of the top TEs but there has been a drop off at other positions so Tony G is the guy. Hopefully he will be in for some big mismatch plans and basically looked at as the second WR in Atlanta.

  11. WalterFootball.com: Chad Ochocinco, WR, Bengals
Chad Ochocinco may be a psychopath, but I’m buying him low. Last year, Carson Palmer played hurt, and then Ryan “I can’t throw the ball longer than 10 yards” Fitzpatrick took over. Of course Ochocinco was going to struggle, especially given that he was coming off ankle surgery.

  12. FFToolbox.com: Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers
    No analysis given.

Round 5

  1. FFToolbox.com: Derrick Ward, RB, Buccaneers
    No analysis given.

  2. WalterFootball.com: Antonio Bryant, WR, Buccaneers
Despite popular opinion, Tampa Bay’s offense is pretty solid. The offensive line is solid; Antonio Bryant Bryant and Kellen Winslow Jr. are a great tandem; the running game will be very potent; and Luke McCown has a nice arm, though he tends to check down too often. If Bryant can garner 83 receptions, 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns with Jeff Garcia at the helm, I don’t see why he can’t duplicate those numbers with McCown.

  3. FootballJabber.com: Santana Moss, WR, Redskins
    No analysis given.

  4. MonsterDraft: Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers
    No analysis given.

  5. Fantasy Sharks Radio: Hines Ward, WR, Steelers
Ward is always consistent and I love having him as my WR3.

  6. FantasySportsCentral.com: Kurt Warner, QB, Cardinals
    No analysis given.

  7. RotoWorld.com: Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Colts
    No analysis given.

  8. JunkyardJake.com: Santonio Holmes, WR, Steelers
    A. Gonzalez was going to be my pick here, good pick Roto. It’s very likely that this is the year that Santonio Holmes wrests the #1 receiver distinction from Ward, but even breaking the 1,000 yard barrier for the 1st time will be completely acceptable.

  9. FantasyIndex.com: Ray Rice, RB, Ravens
Fantasy Index is hitching its wagon to Ray Rice as our breakout running back this season. There’s some risk, but the PPR scoring will help him even if he doesn’t end up in a featured role.

  10. FFJungle.com: Vincent Jackson, WR, Chargers
Jackson should be in line for another 1,000 yards. I just hope he can add to his TD and reception totals. Still, getting a quality No. 2 receiver here is promising.

  11. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Larry Johnson, RB, Chiefs
    No analysis given.

  12. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: Joseph Addai, RB, Colts
    No analysis given.

Round 6

  1. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: Chris Wells, RB, Cardinals
    No analysis given.

  2. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Donovan McNabb, QB, Eagles
I was hoping to wait a liitle longer for my QB, but dont think it is possible, so I will grab him here. I look for a big year from McNabb and his multitude of weapons.

  3. FFJungle.com: Thomas Jones, RB, Jets
Jones won’t likely repeat last season’s excellent output, but he should be solid so long as he is healthy. Besides, he may be the last true No. 2 RB on the board.

  4. FantasyIndex.com: Jay Cutler, QB, Bears
    No analysis given.

  5. JunkyardJake.com: Jerricho Cotchery, WR, Jets
Probably a little early to pick Cotchery, but he is a safe bet for a decent volume of catches as the Jets new #1 receiver.

  6. RotoWorld.com: Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys
    No analysis given.

  7. FantasySportsCentral.com: Roy Williams, WR, Cowboys
    No analysis given.

  8. Fantasy Sharks Radio: Donald Brown, RB, Colts
    No analysis given.

  9. MonsterDraft: DeSean Jackson, WR, Eagles
    No analysis given.

  10. FootballJabber.com: Leon Washington, RB, Jets
    No analysis given.

  11. WalterFootball.com: Lee Evans, WR, Bills
Ever since collecting 82 receptions, 1,290 yards and eight touchdowns in 2006, Lee Evans has really disappointed his fantasy owners. In 2007, he had 849 yards and five scores. Last year, he increased his yardage to 1,017, but had his touchdown total drop to three. Terrell Owens’ presence changes everything. Evans will see less double coverage than ever. All of his numbers should increase.

  12. FFToolbox.com: Dallas Clark, TE, Colts
    No analysis given.

Round 7

  1. FFToolbox.com: Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers
    No analysis given.

  2. WalterFootball.com: Matt Schaub, QB, Texans
If Schaub can stay healthy the entire year, he has a shot to break the 4,000-yard barrier. Andre Johnson is one of the top receivers in the league; Owen Daniels is a really good tight end; and Kevin Walter is a solid No. 2. Having Steve Slaton as a weapon out of the backfield doesn’t hurt either. In fact, Schaub averaged 320 passing yards per game in the final four weeks of the season – as in the period of time where Slaton was utilized most often.

  3. FootballJabber.com: Cedric Benson, RB, Bengals
    No analysis given.

  4. MonsterDraft: Donnie Avery, WR, Rams
    No analysis given.

  5. Fantasy Sharks Radio: Lance Moore, WR, Saints
I really like Moore as my #4WR. They say he will be healthy in time and I have to go with that, but if he is, I can see him eclipsing his numbers from 2008.

  6. FantasySportsCentral.com: Greg Olsen, TE, Bears
    No analysis given.

  7. RotoWorld.com: Chris Cooley, TE, Redskins
    No analysis given.

  8. JunkyardJake.com: Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons
Matt Ryan’s steady improvement throughout last season, and the addition of Tony Gonzalez suggest he might be capable of 20+ TDs, and a slight improvement over his 3400 passing yards.

  9. FantasyIndex.com: Laveranues Coles, WR, Bengals
If you’re going to draft older wideouts, you’d better have an extra starter for when one of them gets hurt. Coincidentally, they all have different bye weeks, hooray.

  10. FFJungle.com: LenDale White, RB, Titans
White should see plenty of carries (especially in the red zone–he had 15 TDs last year), making him a solid No. 3 back with potential should Chris Johnson get hurt. The down side is that he doesn’t catch many passes, but perfection can’t be expected from a late seventh-round pick.

  11. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Torry Holt, WR, Rams
    No analysis given.

  12. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: Bernard Berrian, WR, Vikings
    No analysis given.

Round 8

  1. FantasyFootballXtreme.com: LeSean McCoy, RB, Eagles
    No analysis given.

  2. FantasyFootballWhiz.com: Mark Clayton, WR, Ravens
    No analysis given.

  3. FFJungle.com: Steve Breaston, WR, Cardinals
Berrian or Breaston would have been the dilemma here, but since Berrian’s gone, the choice is easy.

  4. FantasyIndex.com: Julius Jones, RB, Seahawks
Beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to eighth-round starting running backs. Somebody’s gotta be the lead back in Seattle.

  5. JunkyardJake.com: Kellen Winslow Jr., TE, Buccaneers
It’s hard to have particularly high hopes for the Tampa passing offense this year, but Winslow could be the best receiver they have, and he’s not a bad deal in the 8th round.

  6. RotoWorld.com: Fred Jackson, RB, Bills
    No analysis given.

  7. FantasySportsCentral.com: Devin Hester, WR, Bears
    No analysis given.

  8. Fantasy Sharks Radio: John Carlson, TE, Seahawks
Gonna go with my guy here. I am very high on him.

  9. MonsterDraft: Jamal Lewis, RB, Browns
    No analysis given.

  10. FootballJabber.com: Willie Parker, RB, Steelers
    No analysis given.

  11. WalterFootball.com: Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers
Note: I was not alerted that it was my turn to pick, so this selection was made after a few in Round 9. Had I been alerted, I would have chosen Carson Palmer.

I like Matt Schaub this year, but there’s no denying that he has an extensive injury history. If Schaub can’t make it through 16 games, I’m content with Ben Roethlisberger as my starter.

  12. FFToolbox.com: Felix Jones, RB, Cowboys
    No analysis given.
