2009 Fantasy Football Rankings – Busts:
Last Updated: Aug. 26, 2009

  1. Kurt Warner, QB, Cardinals. Bye: 4.
I’ve watched every snap Kurt Warner has taken this preseason, and I have to say that he’s not even close to being the same guy he was last year. He looks hobbled, which makes sense because he’s coming off hip surgery. A 38-year-old coming off hip surgery… why does that not sound lucrative to me?

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: I didn’t like Kurt Warner this year from a fantasy perspective going into this game, and nothing I saw Saturday night changed my mind. Warner finished 6-of-13 for 80 yards and a pick. He didn’t look right all evening, and understandably so, given the fact that he’s coming off hip surgery.

Warner opened the first drive inside San Diego’s 5-yard line. He went 0-for-2; his first pass was a poor throw in the flat. The other was broken up by Quentin Jammer. Warner didn’t look any better on his second possession, as he was nearly picked off on a deep throw to Larry Fitzgerald.

Thirteen of Warner’s yards came on a short checkdown toss to Jerheme Urban, who broke two tackles to gain the yardage. Warner later threw behind Fitzgerald and then overthrew Tim Hightower in the flat.

Warner seemed to get on track later with a 25-yard dart to Anquan Boldin, but unfortunately, he was later picked off in the end zone.

Take it from a guy who absolutely loved Warner as a sleeper last year – avoid him at all costs this season. He’s a 38-year-old man coming off hip surgery with a new contract. If that doesn’t scream bust, I don’t know what does.

  2. Matt Cassel, QB, Chiefs. Bye: 8.
An e-mailer recently sent me an article from ESPN or Scouts Inc. where they said that Matt Cassel was a better quarterback than Donovan McNabb. I almost pissed myself. Cassel is tall, accurate in the short passing game and very mobile, but he lacks any sort of arm strength and cannot play under center. He thrived in New England because he had Randy Moss and Wes Welker. He’ll struggle in Kansas City.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: Matt Cassel may not last the entire season because Kansas City’s offensive line is horrific. The Chiefs simply could not protect Cassel against a Minnesota defensive front on Friday night that was missing Jared Allen and Pat Williams. Cassel was pressured on his first two throws and was sacked three times in the first half. The Vikings’ starters sacked Cassel twice in the first quarter alone.

  3. Michael Turner, RB, Falcons. Bye: 4.
I still hate Michael Turner this year despite his two awesome preseason outings. You can read about it in my 2009 Fantasy Football Running Back Rankings.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: In the season opener last year, Michael Turner abused the Lions for 200 rushing yards and a long touchdown scamper. Detroit fans experienced deja vu, as Turner scored on a 40-yarder on the second drive of the game. Turner compiled 63 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

  4. Thomas Jones, RB, Jets. Bye: 9.
Thomas Jones, now 31, will not repeat the season he had last year. With a rookie quarterback and no Laveranues Coles, teams will stack the line of scrimmage, forcing Mark Sanchez to beat them. Also, Jones is going to lose touches to Leon Washington and Shonn Greene.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: Thomas Jones began the game Monday night with two carries up the middle for six yards each. He also had a 10-yard gain, but relinquished a bunch of his touches to Leon Washington. With Washington bound to get more rushes and Shonn Greene in the mix, Jones won’t come even close to matching his 2008 stats. He’s being overdrafted in many leagues.

  5. Marshawn Lynch, RB, Bills. Bye: 9.
Marshawn Lynch is going to miss three games because of his suspension. He’ll also be unavailable during the bye week. That’s four out of 13 weeks you won’t have him in your regular season (30 percent). And when Lynch plays, he’ll be forced to run behind the worst offensive line in the league. Look elsewhere.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: Marshawn Lynch had no running lanes against the Packers and mustered only six yards on six carries Saturday night. It’s going to be an ugly year for Lynch, who will struggle behind the worst offensive line in the league once he returns from his three-game suspension. Avoid him in your leagues at all cost.

  6. Joseph Addai, RB, Colts. Bye: 6.
I won’t say it’s not possible, but I can’t see Joseph Addai pulling a “DeAngelo Williams” and putting together a monstrous fantasy season out of nowhere. Donald Brown is the more talented back, and it’s not even close.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: Discussing his running back situation, Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said the distribution will be “week-to-week.”

Allow me to translate: “Donald Brown is extremely talented, and for us to keep winning, we need him in the lineup. However, I can’t name him the starter yet because Addai has been here for a while and Brown is just a rookie.”

Addai is injury-prone and not nearly as good as Brown. I’d avoid him in all formats.

  7. Brandon Marshall, WR, Broncos. Bye: 7.
Hip surgery? Check. Not willing to learn the playbook? Check. In the coach’s dog house? Check. Possible suspension by the team? Check. Downgrade at the quarterback position? Check. Let someone else deal with this mess.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: Bob Glauber of Newsday recently Tweeted that he believes the Broncos will suspend Brandon Marshall for conduct detrimental to the team. Glauber then compared Marshall’s actions to Terrell Owens’ stint in Philadelphia. Making matters worse, Marshall currently is working with the scout team.

  8. Torry Holt, WR, Jaguars. Bye: 7.
I initially thought Torry Holt would have a decent season in Jacksonville (nothing spectacular; maybe 900 yards or so), but he has barely been thrown to this preseason. Add in the fact that Jacksonville runs a conservative, run-first offense, and Holt could be in for a very mediocre campaign.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: It might be time to drop Torry Holt in the 2009 Fantasy Football Rankings. David Garrard didn’t target Holt until the fourth drive Saturday night, though it was a 23-yard gain. Holt was not thrown to again.

  9. Laveranues Coles, WR, Bengals. Bye: 8.
In a bizarre turn of events, Chris Henry has overtaken Laveranues Coles as the team’s No. 2 receiver.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: So much for the $27 million the Bengals paid Laveranues Coles this offseason. Chris Henry started over Coles on Thursday night, who was held reception-less.

  10. Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers. Bye: 6.
As if Michael Crabtree didn’t have enough to overcome in terms of transitioning from Texas Tech’s gimmick offense to an NFL pro-style attack… Crabtree is demanding more money than No. 7 pick Darrius Heyward-Bey despite the fact that he was taken with the 10th-overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft. It’s amazing that Crabtree is still being taken in fantasy drafts. Don’t be the guy who has to cut him a few weeks into the season.

MOST RECENT 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE: According to multiple sourcues, including the San Jose Mercury News, Michael Crabtree’s holdout is expected to extend into September. Crabtree is undraftable in any league right now.
