2015 Fantasy Football Rankings - Running Backs (Sept. 10):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40 | 41-75

  1. LeGarrette Blount, RB, Patriots. Bye: 4.
LeGarrette Blount is the favorite to handle most of the workload next year for the Patriots, but who knows what Bill Belichick is planning? It’s hard to trust any New England running back, but Blount will have some big games against poor run defenses, as the Colts learned in two consecutive playoff losses to the Patriots. Keep in mind that Blount will be suspended for the opener, but that shouldn’t impact where you plan on drafting him.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 930 rushing yards. 8 catches. 50 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 146.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 154.

  2. Latavius Murray, RB, Raiders. Bye: 6.
AUG. 31 UPDATE: Latavius Murray gained just one yard on seven carries versus Arizona. That’s not good. Murray was blown up in the backfield twice for losses of three and five, so he barely was above zero despite gaining 13 yards on one play. It’s not Murray’s fault he didn’t have anywhere to run, but the concern is the offensive line, which may have lost right tackle Menelik Watson. The 2013 second-rounder went down with a leg injury and was sobbing when he was taken into the locker room. Jack Del Rio told reporters that it “does not look good.”

AUG. 15 UPDATE: Latavius Murray had an excellent exhibition opener. Murray led the team with 35 yards on just six carries. His big gain was a 17-yarder in which he showed great explosion. The difference between Murray and the slow plodders from last year – Darren McFadden, Maurice Jones-Drew – is night and day. Murray looks like a solid fantasy RB2 this year.

Latavius Murray isn’t guaranteed the starting job in Oakland, but he’s the heavy favorite to have it. Murray showed much more explosion than Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden last year, so if he’s given the workload, he’ll be able to produce possible RB2-type figures. Murray averaged 5.2 yards per carry in 2014.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 890 rushing yards. 26 catches. 200 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 145.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 171.

  3. Arian Foster, RB, Texans. Bye: 9.
SEPT. 4 UPDATE: A trusted source told me that Arian Foster is not expected to go on the PUP list, and that he’s likely to miss about three games. Unfortunately, he’s still a big injury risk. I would take him around the seventh frame in a 12-team league, but I bet he goes earlier than that.

AUG. 25 UPDATE: There’s now speculation that Arian Foster could return in early October. It’s not definite though, so don’t get too excited. Also, it should be noted that Foster returning early could cause him to aggravate the injury. My advice is to stay away from him.

AUG. 4 UPDATE: Arian Foster suffered a significant groin injury that may require surgery. He could be out until November. He obviously can’t be touched in the first 10 rounds now, but makes sense as a late-round flier. For more on how the Texans will be impacted, check out my NFL Disaster Grades.

JUNE 27 UPDATE: I published a positive report on Arian Foster recently. Well, here’s another. Per Charlie Campbell’s sources, Foster has enjoyed a fantastic offseason and seems primed for a big season. Of course, this could all change quickly because Foster has been so injury-prone over the years, but things sound good at the moment.

JUNE 15: Arian Foster has been enjoying his healthiest offseason since he decided to give up meat in his diet. He’s a buy-low candidate for that reason, but just remember that he continues to be a big injury risk.

Arian Foster missed three games, but he had a fantastic 2014 campaign, rushing for 1,246 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns. Foster is unreliable because of his injury history, however. If you draft him, it goes without saying that you absolutely need to obtain strong backup running backs.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 820 rushing yards. 22 catches. 140 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 144.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 166.

  4. Todd Gurley, RB, Rams. Bye: 6.
JULY 28 UPDATE: Todd Gurley is now expected to be back prior to the Rams’ Week 6 bye, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. Gurley remains a risk this year, but there’s a chance he’ll be ready to go for the season opener.

The unquestioned No. 1 2015 fantasy player in dynasty formats, Todd Gurley is the best running back prospect to enter the NFL in quite some time. One team even told us that they believe he’s the next Jim Brown. The problem for this upcoming season is that Gurley might miss the first month or so, but he’ll be a big producer once he returns to the field.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 770 rushing yards. 12 catches. 90 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 142.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 154.

  5. Andre Ellington, RB, Cardinals. Bye: 9.
AUG. 16 UPDATE: Andre Ellington had a strong preseason debut. He caught a 57-yard pass from Carson Palmer on the initial drive, and it looked like he was going to score before getting tackled at the 5-yard line. It didn’t end up mattering though, as Ellington pounced into the end zone a couple of plays later, converting on a third-and-1 at the goal line. Ellington’s stock has dropped with David Johnson now in the mix, but Johnson hasn’t been able to stay healthy, making Ellington an attractive RB2 option.

AUG. 11 UPDATE: Bruce Arians talked about the possibility of signing a free agent running back, citing that he was disappointed with both of his main running backs. Andre Ellington has been hampered with a hamstring. I don’t have an issue with taking Johnson late, but this is a situation to avoid otherwise.

Andre Ellington missed the final four games of the season with a sports hernia. Before that, he was disappointing as a runner, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry. He was more productive in PPR formats, but his 2015 outlook is down, as he’ll have to split the workload to rookie David Johnson.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 760 rushing yards. 45 catches. 360 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 142.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 187.

  6. Ameer Abdullah, RB, Lions. Bye: 9.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: I’ve been ranking Joique Bell ahead of Ameer Abdullah, but it might be time for that to change. Abdullah, who by all accounts has enjoyed a strong training camp, was extremely explosive in his preseason debut. He showed nice burst on his runs, and he made a great juke on a defender during his second attempt to pick up a first down. On the next possession, he displayed incredible acceleration after one cut for a gain of 45 yards. It needs to be said that this was against the Jets’ first-string defense, and to top it off, Matthew Stafford and Golden Tate were both off the field on the play, so it’s not like New York was focused on stopping the aerial attack. Abdullah is a legitimate, dynamic talent, and he could be a big producer as a rookie.

AUG. 14 UPDATE: Ameer Abdullah has been a “star” in training camp for the Lions, according to Michael Rothstein of ESPN. Joique Bell remains the early favorite to start, but Abdullah could change that with a terrific preseason.

Ameer Abdullah will split touches with Joique Bell right away, and he could emerge as the primary back at some point in the future. He’s a talented runner who can go the distance every time he touches the ball, so perhaps he’ll become the player the Lions were hoping they had in Reggie Bush.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 750 rushing yards. 33 catches. 260 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 141.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 174.

  7. Duke Johnson, RB, Browns. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 9 UPDATE: Duke Johnson is likely to have a big role in the season opener, according to Mike Pettine. Johnson is over his concussion and is worth a late-round pick.

SEPT. 7 UPDATE: Terrance West is gone, so Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson now have one fewer player to compete for snaps with. Johnson has no experience, but the coaching staff seems to like him. Perhaps their optimism toward him was the catalyst for the West move. With that in mind, he should be targeted late in drafts.

AUG. 5 UPDATE: Duke Johnson has been out for a while with a hamstring injury, prompting head coach Mike Pettine to call his absence “disappointing.” According to Albert Breer, Johnson could be out a few more weeks, which doesn’t bode well for his playing time this year.

Mike Pettine seemed displeased with both Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West at times last year, platooning the two backs randomly. Perhaps he’ll feel better about Duke Johnson. Then again, maybe Pettine won’t play Johnson at all. Erratic coaches don’t make for quality fantasy running back situations.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 710 rushing yards. 22 catches. 150 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 134.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 156.

  8. Joseph Randle, RB, Cowboys. Bye: 6.
SEPT. 7 UPDATE: Joseph Randle will now have another running back to compete with in Christine Michael, who was acquired Sunday. Michael is the superior talent and could eventually emerge as the starter. Randle remains the favorite to lead Dallas in carries, but his situation is even more shaky now.

AUG. 31 UPDATE: Joseph Randle drew the start versus Minnesota. He struggled early on, thanks to poor blocking from an offensive line missing Zack Martin. He had two nice gains later on, as well as an 11-yard burst that was negated by a Ronald Leary hold. However, the big news is that Darren McFadden looked much better than he did the previous week. He was given just four carries, but turned them into 37 yards. After the game, it was reported that the Cowboys prefer McFadden over Randle, but they are fully dedicated to using a committee. This obviously hurts Randle’s draft stock.

AUG. 22 UPDATE: It was recently reported that Joseph Randle aggravated his oblique injury, but he returned to practice Friday and was running with the first team. Don’t hesitate to grab Randle as an RB2.

JULY 30 UPDATE: Jerry Jones called Joseph Randle his “No. 1 back.” There’s been speculation that the Cowboys could bring in Chris Johnson, but it seems as though Randle will be the starter in Week 1. Randle could have a big year behind one of the league’s best offensive lines.

Joseph Randle was facing charges for a domestic disturbance, but he was cleared in late April. He’s now the favorite to lead the Cowboys in touches, but he could be splitting the workload with Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar. Randle has tremendous upside because of how great Dallas’ offensive line is.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 710 rushing yards. 15 catches. 100 receiving yards. 7 total TD.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 133.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 148.

  9. Isaiah Crowell, RB, Browns. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 7 UPDATE: Terrance West is gone, so Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson now have one fewer player to compete for snaps with. Crowell is the favorite to lead the Browns in carries, but even if he is overtaken by Johnson, he’ll still be in the same position he was before the West trade, so he has more upside as a fantasy back now.

AUG. 3 UPDATE: Cleveland’s running back situation was completely muddled last year, but head coach Mike Pettine may not have a chance to screw things up this season. That’s because Terrance West and Duke Johnson both suffered injuries in practice over the weekend. Isaiah Crowell will have a chance to prove that he can get over his ball-security issues while both are out.

AUG. 1 UPDATE: Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West have been splitting first-team reps in training camp. Duke Johnson figures to be in the mix as well. Crowell is the most talented back on Cleveland’s roster, but things will remain the same – the rotation will be too sporadic to completely figure out. I wouldn’t mind taking any Cleveland runner in the later rounds, but avoid them in the middle frames.

Mike Pettine thinks he’s Bill Belichick – at least when it comes to managing a running back rotation. Isaiah Crowell proved to be the more-talented back this past season, but no matter how well he ran, it was always a toss up as to whether he or Terrance West would get more of a workload. Crowell has RB2 upside, but that took a hit when Cleveland drafted Duke Johnson.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 790 rushing yards. 14 catches. 110 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 132.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 146.

  10. Joique Bell, RB, Lions. Bye: 9.
AUG. 8 UPDATE: T.J. Yeldon has reportedly done well in pass protection during training camp. Rookie running backs can be risky because coaches may not feel comfortable having them on the field because of protection issues, but that doesn’t appear to be a problem for Yeldon.

Joique Bell handled most of the workload in 2014, rushing for 860 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 34 catches. Ameer Abdullah was drafted in the second round, but Bell should be able to hold him off for the starting job, at least this upcoming season.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 650 rushing yards. 35 catches. 290 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 130.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 165.

  11. Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers. Bye: 5.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Jonathan Stewart was also adversely affected by Kelvin Benjamin’s absence. He rushed for only two yards on two carries against the Dolphins, and he was also guilty of a drop. Stewart is one of the most overdrafted players in fantasy this summer. You should avoid him; he’s an injury-prone player who won’t have any running room, thanks to Benjamin’s injury and a pedestrian offensive line.

AUG. 20 UPDATE: With Kelvin Benjamin out, Jonathan Stewart won’t have as much running room. He also won’t be in position to score as many touchdowns, given that Carolina’s offense won’t be as productive. I already had Stewart in my Fantasy Football Busts list, and now I like him even less.

Jonathan Stewart was on fire down the stretch. Following the team’s Week 12 bye, Stewart averaged 97.2 yards per game on the ground. We saw the potential he had if he could stay healthy. Unfortunately, that’s an issue; Stewart has missed 20 contests in the past three seasons. Stewart’s strong finish could cause him to go overdrafted. I wouldn’t risk an early pick on him.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 820 rushing yards. 24 catches. 170 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 129.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 153.

  12. Bishop Sankey, RB, Titans. Bye: 4.
AUG. 24 UPDATE: I don’t know what happened to the old Bishop Sankey, but someone kidnapped him and replaced him with a pod person who has much more talent. Sankey was awesome in the second preseason game, tallying 45 yards on just six carries. He started by breaking numerous tackles on a 19-yard gain, and there were a couple of other plays in which he was able to shed defenders. David Cobb has been getting a ton of hype lately, but Sankey made a huge statement against the Rams.

AUG. 23 UPDATE: With David Cobb predicted to lead the Titans in carries, Bishop Sankey needs to drop in the rankings. Sankey has struggled in the preseason thus far, so his 2015 outlook already wasn’t very bright.

AUG. 15 UPDATE: Bishop Sankey has been the best running back in Tennessee’s training camp, which is just sad, based on how poorly he played in the preseason opener. Sankey mustered just 15 yards on eight carries. He had a gain of seven, which means his seven other attempts went for just eight yards. On one occasion, Sankey ran sideways on a second-and-1 and turned it into a third-and-3. He didn’t have good blocking, but he didn’t seem to display any sort of talent.

Bishop Sankey was a big disappointment as a rookie. The Titans will probably give him another chance next year, but he probably won’t be anything better than an RB3. It’s possible that he could lose his job to fifth-round rookie David Cobb.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 850 rushing yards. 25 catches. 190 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 128.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 153.

  13. Rashad Jennings, RB, Giants. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 4 UPDATE: Andre Williams received the first couple of carries in the preseason finale over Rashad Jennings, which can’t be encouraging for Jennings owners. This seems to be a true time share, so I’d stay away.

AUG. 13 UPDATE: There was a report about Rashad Jennings getting snaps with the second team last week, but he’s been ahead of Andre Williams for the most part. Shane Vereen will see the field most often in all likelihood, but there’s no doubt that Jennings is ahead of Williams on the depth chart.

AUG. 7 UPDATE: Rashad Jennings has reportedly been receiving more second-team reps than both Shane Vereen and Andre Williams. Jennings is being overdrafted right now.

Rashad Jennings would be a solid RB2 if he could remain healthy, but that’s hardly the case. Jennings is not a reliable running back, and he’ll have to split time with Andre Williams and Shane Vereen. The addition of the latter to the roster really hurts Jennings’ chances, as his receptions are bound to drop.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 720 rushing yards. 24 catches. 180 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 126.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 150.

  14. Shane Vereen, RB, Giants. Bye: 11.
JUNE 20 UPDATE: Shane Vereen, per Jordan Raanan of NJ.com, isn’t going to be “just a third-down back.” Vereen has been playing all over the field in Giants’ practice. Considering starter Rashad Jennings’ injury history, it’ll be a good idea to target Vereen in your draft.

Bill Belichick’s running back rotation has proven to be impossible to figure out, so maybe Shane Vereen’s role will be more defined with the Giants. Vereen caught 52 balls last year, so he’ll be a viable option in PPR formats, but he won’t get many carries with Andre Williams and Rashad Jennings on the roster.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 440 rushing yards. 51 catches. 430 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 117.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 168.

  15. Giovani Bernard, RB, Bengals. Bye: 7.
AUG. 4 UPDATE: Giovani Bernard won’t have nearly as many touches in 2015, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The Bengals want Jeremy Hill to handle the full workload, so Bernard can’t be started unless Hill gets hurt.

Giovani Bernard lost the starting tailback job to Jeremy Hill this past season, but he still got plenty of touches, especially as a receiver out of the backfield. He’s obviously better in PPR formats.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 470 rushing yards. 46 catches. 360 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 117.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 165.

  16. Tevin Coleman, RB, Falcons. Bye: 10.
SEPT. 9 UPDATE: Tevin Coleman is listed as the starter on the depth chart with Devonta Freeman injured.

Devonta Freeman barely showed anything as a rookie, so Tevin Coleman could be the starter in Week 1. It’s hard to trust rookies, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on this competition during training camp and the preseason.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 600 rushing yards. 20 catches. 150 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 115.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 135.

  17. Darren McFadden, RB, Cowboys. Bye: 6.
AUG. 31 UPDATE: Darren McFadden looked much better against the Vikings than he did the previous week. He was given just four carries, but turned them into 37 yards. After the game, it was reported that the Cowboys prefer McFadden over Randle, but they are fully dedicated to using a committee. I wouldn’t trust McFadden because of his injury history, but he’s definitely on the radar.

JULY 31 UPDATE: Darren McFadden is missing time with a hamstring injury. McFadden went with a new workout regimen last offseason that prevented him from getting hurt. He must be back to his lethargic ways. Avoid him in fantasy drafts.

It’s unclear how Dallas’ running back rotation will shape out, but it seems as though Darren McFadden will be No. 2 on the depth chart behind Joseph Randle. If he makes the roster, he’ll be worth picking up because of how good the Cowboys’ offensive line is.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 590 rushing yards. 20 catches. 150 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 114.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 134.

  18. C.J. Spiller, RB, Saints. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 9 UPDATE: C.J. Spiller is out for Week 1 with a knee injury, so keep that in mind if you plan on drafting him.

AUG. 16 UPDATE: C.J. Spiller will be out for the rest of the preseason with arthroscopic knee surgery. It sounds like Spiller could be back in Week 1, but things like that are far from guaranteed. The good news is that this could prompt Spiller’s stock to fall, allowing us to snag him in a good value round.

JULY 24 UPDATE: C.J. Spiller is currently projected to catch 60 passes this year, at least according to ESPN Saints. It’s a reasonable figure, given the lack of weapons suddenly surrounding Drew Brees. The Bills never figured out how to properly utilize Spiller, it sounds like New Orleans has a better idea.

C.J. Spiller can’t carry a full workload, but he fits in well with the Saints, who missed Darren Sproles last year. Spiller will take over the Sproles role and catch a bunch of passes, but his rushes will be limited.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 360 rushing yards. 47 catches. 390 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 113.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 160.

  19. Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos. Bye: 7.
Montee Ball is going three rounds earlier than Ronnie Hillman in fantasy drafts, yet Hillman was the first running back on the field once C.J. Anderson was done for the night at Houston. Hillman also looked much better than Ball, gaining 54 yards on just eight carries, while the sluggish Ball mustered only four yards on as many attempts.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 440 rushing yards. 26 catches. 160 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 110.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 136.

  20. Andre Williams, RB, Giants. Bye: 11.
Andre Williams will share touches with Rashad Jennings and Shane Vereen next year. It’s hard to love him from a fantasy perspective; he’ll need Jennings to get hurt to really be productive, and even then, he’s just a marginal talent. He has upside in touchdown-only leagues, but that’s about it.

Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 550 rushing yards. 10 catches. 60 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2015 Fantasy Points: 107.
Projected 2015 PPR Fantasy Points: 117.
