2015 Fantasy Football Rankings - Quarterbacks (Sept. 10):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-35
- Tom Brady, QB, Patriots. Bye: 4.
SEPT. 3 UPDATE: OK, so, Tom Brady’s not suspended anymore. Where should you draft him? I was thinking about that, and I thought I’d list him as a seventh-round option. He might be a top-10 fantasy quarterback – MIGHT BE – but then I realized that his ADP was already in the seventh frame, which was absurd. Something even crazier was what I read from another fantasy football publication Thursday morning. They called Brady a “top-five fantasy quarterback,” which gave me a good laugh. They clearly haven’t been paying attention.
Brady is done. His arm is shot. He has spent all summer in court rooms. His wife has threatened him with divorce. He can no longer use deflated footballs. He does not have a quality offensive line protecting him. He has played like a rotting corpse this preseason. It’s absolutely insane to call him a top-five fantasy quarterback, yet that’s what most people believe, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s chosen in the third or fourth rounds of the three fantasy drafts I have this upcoming weekend.
Like I said, Brady might finish in the top 10 – he’ll have the volume to do so – but given that clueless people will be dying to draft him now, you should absolutely stay away unless he somehow happens to fall to that seventh-round range (in 12-team leagues).
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Tom Brady had a third poor performance this preseason against the Panthers. He has struggled immensely, and he appears to be distracted by the Deflategate situation. Many are considering him a “steal” at his eighth-round ADP, but I wouldn’t touch him there.
AUG. 14 UPDATE: It wasn’t quite clear whether Tom Brady would play or not in the preseason opener, given that he’s been busy with the Deflategate proceedings, but he took the field for two drives. Unfortunately for the Patriots, Brady didn’t quite look like himself, albeit in limited action. Brady’s first pass, which was targeted for Josh Boyce, sailed on him. I’m actually not joking when I say this, but it looked like Brady was shocked that there was so much air in the ball. Brady went just 1-of-4 for 10 yards. He was victimized by a Boyce drop, but his other two incompletions were pretty ugly. He didn’t look like himself, but the preseason is still young, and Rob Gronkowski and several of the other starters didn’t play.
JULY 29 UPDATE: Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for Deflategate has been upheld. Check out my Disaster Grades for my thoughts on how the Patriots will fare without him. As far as fantasy is concerned, this is obviously a major hit to Brady’s stock. He’s just a bottom-end QB1 at best, given that he won’t be available until Week 6.
Tom Brady has been suspended for four games because of Deflategate. Brady is still a QB1, but just barely; he’ll turn 38 in August, which is bad news considering that Peyton Manning saw a dropoff at that age.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 4,300 passing yards. 30 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 50 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 283.
- Cam Newton, QB, Panthers. Bye: 5.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Whether it was because of him or his supporting cast, Cam Newton struggled in his first start without Kelvin Benjamin. He opened with a poor throw to Philly Brown along the sideline; it was off the mark, and Brown couldn’t stay on the field as a result. Brown and Jonathan Stewart then combined to drop three passes, including one in the end zone by the former. Newton also continued to throw poorly; he telegraphed an apparent pick-six to Greg Olsen – the defender barely stepped out of bounds on the return – and then Newton overthrew Ed Dickson. He finished just 4-of-10 for 42 yards and the interception. Newton will still be an effective fantasy player because of his running ability, but not having Benjamin at his disposal makes him a much less intriguing option.
AUG. 20 UPDATE: As I explained in my Disaster Grades, Cam Newton will struggle without Kelvin Benjamin because opposing defenses will be able to play closer to the line of scrimmage. This is the first time Newton won’t have a respected receiver at his disposal, so it’s hard to like his chances.
Cam Newton struggled early last year, as he dealt with numerous injuries. He caught fire at the end, however, rushing for 197 yards and three scores on the ground in his final three contests. He’s a solid fantasy quarterback when healthy, and he should be better next year with a slightly upgraded supporting cast.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 3,400 passing yards. 21 passing TDs. 17 INTs. 600 rushing yards. 6 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 282.
- Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Philip Rivers took a step backward this past season, seeing his yardage drop by 200 and his interceptions increase by seven. The problem was twofold; his offensive line struggled, and lingering injuries slowed him down in the second half of the year. He’s still a borderline QB1.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 4,400 passing yards. 30 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 70 rushing yards. 0 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 279.
- Sam Bradford, QB, Eagles. Bye: 8.
AUG. 31 UPDATE: Sam Bradford was a perfect 10-of-10 at Green Bay, accumulating 121 yards and three touchdowns in the process. Prior to watching this game, I assumed that many of his throws were checkdowns, and some of them were, but Bradford made several impressive throws.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: Sam Bradford won’t play in the preseason opener, which wouldn’t have been a big deal, but now the Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski is adamant that Bradford is not 100 percent. This is no surprise, as Bradford was limping around a couple of months ago. He remains a solid, late-round gamble, but shouldn’t be touched before the 11th frame in a 12-team league.
AUG. 3 UPDATE: Sam Bradford has been cleared for drills, and the media believes it’s clear that he will be the starter Week 1 over Mark Sanchez. Bradford would be a nice fantasy option if it weren’t a virtual guarantee that he’ll be injured by October. Philadelphia’s starting quarterback – whether that’s Bradford, Sanchez or Tim Tebow – can be started in all 12-man fantasy leagues because of the volume of Chip Kelly’s offense.
JUNE 14 UPDATE: Sam Bradford has been limping around OTAs, as he has been slow to recover from his torn ACL (check out my NFL Disaster Grades for more). It’s going to take a miracle for Bradford to play half the season; let alone all 16 games. It’s a shame because he’d be worth a mid-round selection as a high-volume passer in Chip Kelly’s offense.
MAY 31 UPDATE: I didn’t publish my fantasy stock report yet, but Sam Bradford has to drop because he has reportedly been walking around with a limp. Several Philadelphia reporters now because Mark Sanchez has a good chance of starting the season opener.
Sam Bradford has great fantasy potential as Chip Kelly’s starting quarterback. Unfortunately, there’s a very slim chance that he’ll make it through all 16 games. He may not even get through the preseason without getting hurt. Bradford should be drafted as a QB2 with upside.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 3,100 passing yards. 20 passing TDs. 9 INTs. 90 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 265.
- Joe Flacco, QB, Ravens. Bye: 9.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: The Ravens didn’t try very hard at Philadelphia, and Joe Flacco is included. If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought that Jay Cutler kidnapped him and put on his jersey. Flacco had the worst performance I’ve ever seen from him, as he went 3-of-7 for 23 yards and two interceptions. The first pick was an underthrown deep ball to Kamar Aiken. The second sailed a mile over a wide-open Marlon Brown’s head despite the fact that Flacco had a clean pocket. Flacco then heaved a high incomplete pass toward Maxx Williams, and just like that, his night was done. The Eagles didn’t do anything to affect Flacco; he simply fired awful passes. I like Flacco this year in Marc Trestman’s offense, but I’m going to have to change my mind if he plays like this next week.
Joe Flacco just had his best statistical season, throwing for 3,986 yards, 27 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions. Torrey Smith is gone, but Flacco’s outlook is bright, given that the team hired Marc Trestman, who is also known as the “quarterback whisperer.” Baltimore also spent its first two selections on offensive weapons. Flacco will be a borderline QB1 this year.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 4,150 passing yards. 26 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 80 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 266.
- Eli Manning, QB, Giants. Bye: 11.
Eli Manning threw for 4,410 yards and 30 touchdowns this past season, as his yardage and touchdowns increased by 600 and 12, respectively. The difference was Odell Beckham, who was unstoppable. Unless Beckham is guilty of a sophomore slump, Manning should be able to serve as a high QB2, especially with an improved offensive line.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 4,350 passing yards. 29 passing TDs. 16 INTs. 30 rushing yards. 0 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 261.
- Blake Bortles, QB, Jaguars. Bye: 8.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Blake Bortles went 20-of-29 for 245 yards and a touchdown to go along with four scrambles for 38 rushing yards in two-and-a-half quarters of action versus Detroit. He was every bit as good as those numbers indicate, which is not surprising at all. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson has turned water into wine before in terms of coaching up lesser quarterbacks, yet now he has a true talent in Bortles, who made only a couple of bad throws in this game. Bortles projects to be a solid QB2 with upside because of his rushing ability.
Blake Bortles regressed in 2014, thanks to some poor coaching, but he’ll have Greg Olson as his coordinator this year. Olson once made Josh Freeman into a Pro Bowl quarterback before Freeman melted down because of personal issues. Olson should be able to get the most out of Bortles, whose rushing ability at least puts him on the fantasy radar.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 3,780 passing yards. 20 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 400 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 261.
- Colin Kaepernick, QB, 49ers. Bye: 10.
AUG. 16 UPDATE: It’s unclear if Colin Kaepernick will be able to function without Jim Harbaugh. Kaepernick did not get off to a good start in the preseason opener. He completed just one of his three pass attempts for 14 yards. He had an open Torrey Smith way downfield on one of his attempts, but he overshot him by about five yards.
Colin Kaepernick has regressed after a brilliant start to his career, and he’ll continue to decline now that Jim Harbaugh is gone. Harbaugh did a great job of coaching up his quarterbacks, but with him moving on to Michigan, Kaepernick will struggle mightily. He should be avoided this year.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 3,400 passing yards. 20 passing TDs. 14 INTs. 600 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 260.
- Marcus Mariota, QB, Titans. Bye: 4.
JUNE 24 UPDATE: Ken Whisenhunt told the media that there will be plenty of designed runs for Marcus Mariota. Those worrying that Whisenhunt will ruin Mariota by forcing him into his system can relax; Tennessee’s plan this entire time has been to build around Mariota’s strengths. Mariota should be drafted as a QB2 with plenty of upside, thanks to his rushing ability.
Marcus Mariota is worth drafting in his rookie year, and he should be rated above Jameis Winston in dynasty formats. Mariota doesn’t have the great weapons Winston currently has at his disposal, but he’ll pick up tons of yardage by scrambling.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 3,100 passing yards. 17 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 600 rushing yards. 4 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 252.
- Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Vikings. Bye: 5.
Teddy Bridgewater finished the year on a torrid streak, compiling 250-plus yards in three of his four final contests. He also threw multiple touchdowns in four of his final six contests. He’s a low-end QB2 with upside this year.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Stats: 3,750 passing yards. 21 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 250 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2015 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 245.
