I’m starting a series of mock draft posts using the FantasyPros Mock Draft Simulator and will be using different settings and draft positions to give us a look at how they play out. For my first mock, I went fairly mainstream with one-point PPR, 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRS, 1 TE, 1 DEF and 11 bench spots. I chose the No. 10 draft position this time.
Round 2:
2.01 Julio Jones, ATL
2.02 Dez Bryant, DAL
2.03 Calvin Johnson, DET
2.04 Jeremy Hill, CIN
2.05 Jordy Nelson, GB
2.06 A.J. Green, CIN
2.07 DeMarco Murray, PHI
2.08 T.Y. Hilton, IND
2.09 LeSean McCoy, BUF
2.10 DeAndre Hopkins, HOU
2.11 Alshon Jeffery, CHI
2.12 (24) Randall Cobb, GB
For the third pick in the second round, I went with Calvin Johnson. Johnson will be a polarizing figure this season in fantasy circles and probably for good reason. It’s tough to look at his 2014 campaign and not feel the sting of that lost season, but this is a new year, and Johnson is still in the range of an elite wide receiver’s prime at 30 years of age. Is he the de facto top receiver he once was? He is not. But getting a slight discount on a player with his upside is fine with me.
I wanted Julio Jones or Dez Bryant, who both went just ahead of me and then I almost went with Jeremy Hill instead of Megatron. Really, the only pick in this round I dislike is T.Y. Hilton. He has plenty of upside with Andrew Luck at the helm, but I do worry about his targets being spread out with the Colts picking up Andre Johnson in the offseason. This offense is going to be great, but Luck is who I’d want from the Colts if given the choice.
The debate between Randall Cobb and DeAndre Hopkins is an interesting one. Cobb is the No. 2 target in a high-powered offense, while Hopkins is the No. 1 target in a peashooter offense. This early in the draft, we are paying for Cobb’s 12 touchdowns last season, 10 of which came in his first nine games, and for Hopkins, we are paying for his potential with Andre Johnson gone. What I’ll do is see where I’ve gone with my first picks and weigh how much risk I have there, and then balance it out with the risky Hopkins or the high-floor Cobb.
Round 3:
3.01 Mike Evans, TB
3.02 Mark Ingram, NO
3.03 Justin Forsett, BAL
3.04 Jimmy Graham, SEA
3.05 C.J. Spiller, NO
3.06 Brandin Cooks, NO
3.07 Aaron Rodgers, GB
3.08 Melvin Gordon, SD
3.09 Emmanuel Sanders, DEN
3.10 Andrew Luck, IND
3.11 Andre Johnson, IND
3.12 (36) Giovani Bernard, CIN
I almost never take a quarterback this early in a draft, but Andrew Luck will be an exception for me this season. Of course the problem with “expert” mock drafts is that quarterbacks go much later in drafts than they usually do in your draft with your uncle who’s wearing his Andrew Luck jersey. So this situation might not even be one you’ll encounter, but if you are in a league with a lot of players who wait on quarterbacks, I’d feel fine grabbing Luck in the third. His upside is great with his ability to score rushing touchdowns, and the addition of Andre Johnson isn’t going to hurt either.
The two New Orleans picks of C.J. Spiller and Brandin Cooks are high on my wish list for PPR leagues. Right now, those two are going 47th and 36th in drafts. So both of these picks went earlier (29th/30th) than their ADP, but Cooks would have been gone by the time their next pick came around, whereas the odds are that Spiller would still be available in the fourth round.
Giovanni Bernard does have much more value in PPR leagues, but this still seems too early for him. With Tyler Eifert and Marvin Jones back, and Jeremy Hill the lead back, I don’t think we can count on Bernard getting enough targets for the 36th-overall pick. Right now, he is being drafted as the 46th-overall pick and that still seems too high.
