2009 Fantasy Football Rankings: Kickers

These 2009 Fantasy Football Kickers Rankings will be updated often throughout the summer, so make sure you check back from time to time. Also, be sure to check out my other 2009 Fantasy Football articles, which will include sleepers, busts, tons of 2009 Fantasy Football mock drafts and other things.

2009 Fantasy Football Rankings – Kickers:
Last Updated: Sept. 6, 2009

  1. Stephen Gostkowski, Patriots. Bye: 8.
Matt Cassel couldn’t get the Patriots into the end zone, which would explain why Stephen Gostkowski attempted 40 field goals, making 34 of them. His attempts will come back down to Earth with Tom Brady healthy again, but he’ll still get a ton of PATs.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-28 FG (1-1 from 50+; 4-6 from 40-49). 64 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 153.

  2. Mason Crosby, Packers. Bye: 5.
AUG. 17 UPDATE: Mason Crosby nearly hit a 60-yard field goal in the preseason opener. He had the distance, but hit the left upright. So much for struggling in training camp.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: Playing for one of the top offenses in the NFL, Mason Crosby was 27-of-34 last year, which included 3-of-6 from beyond 50. Crosby is 28-of-38 against a rush in training camp. His misses have been from 28, 35, 40, 40, 40, 45, 47, 48, 48 and 48. Crosby is a desirable kicker to have because the Packers have a great offense, but aren’t particularly efficient in the red zone. He’ll be one to watch in the preseason.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-31 FG (3-5 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 47 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 152.

  3. Rob Bironas, Titans. Bye: 7.
Rob Bironas attempted just one field goal from 50-plus last year, but he can definitely hit them; he was 4-of-5 from there in 2007. Expect Bironas’ attempts to stay down; Kerry Collins and Chris Johnson have made Tennessee’s offense much more efficient.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 28-31 FG (2-3 from 50+; 10-12 from 40-49). 44 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 142.

  4. Kris Brown, Texans. Bye: 10.
The Texans have one of the best offenses in the league. Kris Brown has a strong leg and the luxury of kicking in a dome. He’s one of the top fantasy players at his position.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 27-32 FG (2-4 from 50+; 8-10 from 40-49). 48 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 141.

  5. Nick Folk, Cowboys. Bye: 6.
Proving how unpredictable fantasy kickers can be, Nick Folk, the consensus No. 1 kicker last year, was cut by most fantasy owners in the middle of the 2008 season. Folk attempted just 22 kicks, thanks in part to Tony Romo’s injury. He’ll bounce back.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 26-30 FG (2-3 from 50+; 9-11 from 40-49). 46 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 137.

  6. Robbie Gould, Bears. Bye: 5.
The good news is that Robbie Gould’s attempts and extra points will rise with Jay Cutler under center. The bad news is that Gould has still yet to make a 50-yard field goal in his career.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 27-32 FG (0-1 from 50+; 9-12 from 40-49). 46 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 136.

  7. Nate Kaeding, Chargers. Bye: 5.
Nate Kaeding has hit at least 84.4 percent of his field goals the past four years. His attempts should be back down now that LaDainian Tomlinson is healthy.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-28 FG (1-1 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 50 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 133.

  8. Jason Hanson, Lions. Bye: 7.
SEPT. 6 UPDATE: With nothing but final roster cuts going on today – see a complete of 2009 NFL Final Roster Cuts here – let’s talk about kickers. Jason Hanson gets a boost because Detroit released its backup kicker, indicating that Hanson could be good to go Week 1. Hanson is a bit underrated; with Matthew Stafford at the helm, the Lions will have a more efficient offense. And because Stafford is a rookie quarterback, Detroit could struggle in the red zone.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: Jason Hanson was 8-of-8 from 50-plus last year – and he did this at 38 years old! He obviously won’t repeat this at 39, but that feat might make him overvalued.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 27-31 FG (3-5 from 50+; 8-9 from 40-49). 37 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 132.

  9. Jason Elam, Falcons. Bye: 4.
Moving from Denver to Atlanta, and turning 38 didn’t stop Jason Elam from nailing 93.5 percent of his field goals, including a 50-yard game-winner against the Bears. Now 39, Elam’s stats have to decline, right?

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-29 FG (1-2 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 46 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 130.

  10. Ryan Longwell, Vikings. Bye: 9.
Since moving to Minnesota in 2006, Ryan Longwell has hit at least 83.3 percent of his field goals every year. He was 6-of-6 from 50-plus last year, but at age 35, that’s not going to happen again.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-29 FG (2-4 from 50+; 8-10 from 40-49). 42 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 129.

  11. Shayne Graham, Bengals. Bye: 8.
Like every other Cincinnati offensive player, Shayne Graham suffered a decline in production. Look for a bounce-back season as long as Carson Palmer stays healthy.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 27-31 FG (1-2 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 39 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 128.

  12. David Akers, Eagles. Bye: 4.
David Akers, 35 in December, was just 2-of-10 from beyond 40 yards in 2007. He bounced back, finishing 10-of-15 from that range, but he’s no longer reliable.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-33 FG (1-3 from 50+; 5-8 from 40-49). 44 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 126.

  13. Steve Hauschka, Ravens. Bye: 7.
Steve Hauschka has won the kicking job in Baltimore. With Joe Flacco coming into his own, the Ravens will give Hauschka more opportunities. Unfortunately, Hauschka is not proven, and therefore should not be trusted until he shows he can be a legitimate NFL kicker.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 23-28 FG (2-4 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 44 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 126.

  14. Neil Rackers, Cardinals. Bye: 4.
Neil Rackers had his best year since 2005, and Arizona’s offense was unstoppable for most of the season. Odds are against everything playing out perfectly for the Cardinals again.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-32 FG (1-3 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 41 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 124.

  15. Lawrence Tynes, Giants. Bye: 10.
Lawrence Tynes hit the game-winning field goal in the NFC Championship in January 2008, and was subsequently rewarded with a contract extension and a year off. With John Carney gone, Tynes will have to work again.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-30 FG (2-4 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 38 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 123.

  16. Jeff Reed, Steelers. Bye: 8.
Jeff Reed has hit at least 82.8 percent of his field goals in four out of the past five seasons. He has just two 50-yarders in the last four years, however.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-29 FG (1-2 from 50+; 5-7 from 40-49). 40 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 122.

  17. Phil Dawson, Browns. Bye: 9.
With no running game or reliable receivers outside of Braylon Edwards, one has to wonder how the Browns are going move the chains in 2008.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 26-31 FG (1-2 from 50+; 7-8 from 40-49). 35 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 122.

  18. Olindo Mare, Seahawks. Bye: 7.
Olindo Mare won the kicking job in Seattle over Brandon Coutu. The Seahawks seemed determined to give Coutu the job. Mare won out and should be taken in the final round of your draft; Seattle will have a potent offense this season.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 24-30 FG (1-4 from 50+; 5-7 from 40-49). 41 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 120.

  19. John Kasay, Panthers. Bye: 4.
Believe it or not, John Kasay turns 40 in October. The 2008 season was the first year since 2002 in which Kasay failed to make more than one 50-yarder.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 24-28 FG (1-3 from 50+; 6-9 from 40-49). 39 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 119.

  20. Dan Carpenter, Dolphins. Bye: 6.
Dan Carpenter was an impressive 10-of-14 from 40-plus last year. Miami’s offense is bound to take a small step backward this season, so I’d look elsewhere for a kicker.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 23-29 FG (2-3 from 50+; 8-11 from 40-49). 37 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 118.

  21. Josh Brown, Rams. Bye: 9.
Josh Brown made the most out of his opportunity to kick in a dome at least nine times per year. Brown nailed 6-of-8 attempts from 50-plus last year. He obviously won’t do as well in 2009, but St. Louis’ offense can’t be any worse than it was last year, right?

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-29 FG (4-6 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 26 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 116.

  22. Joe Nedney, 49ers. Bye: 6.
Joe Nedney is 36 and plays in a mediocre offense. Avoid.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 24-28 FG (1-2 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 32 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 112.

  23. Rian Lindell, Bills. Bye: 9.
Buffalo’s offense should be better this year, and Rian Lindell is usually good for two field goals from 50-plus. He’s been 82.9 percent or better in all but one season since 2003.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 23-29 FG (2-3 from 50+; 7-9 from 40-49). 32 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 112.

  24. Josh Scobee, Jaguars. Bye: 7.
This is pretty weird – Josh Scobee was better from 50-plus (4-of-5) than he was from 30-to-39 (3-of-6) last year. Scobee has a strong leg, but he’s been worse than 77 percent in three of his five NFL seasons.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 21-27 FG (2-3 from 50+; 6-9 from 40-49). 36 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 109.

  25. Adam Vinatieri, Colts. Bye: 6.
SEPT. 6 UPDATE: Unlike the Lions, the Colts decided to keep two kickers, which tells me that Adam Vinatieri is not healthy. Look for someone else in the final round of your fantasy draft.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: Adam Vinatieri turns 37 in December. Ironically, he hit two 50-plus field goals last year, despite the fact that he hadn’t made a single 50-yarder since 2002.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 20-26 FG (0-1 from 50+; 4-7 from 40-49). 44 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 108.

  26. Matt Prater, Broncos. Bye: 7.
The coach is worse. The quarterback is worse. Only Matt Prater’s ineptness has remained the same. Prater missed a field goal in all but one of his final nine games in 2008.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 22-30 FG (1-3 from 50+; 6-10 from 40-49). 33 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 107.

  27. Sebastian Janikowski, Raiders. Bye: 9.
As of this writing, the only non-running back on the Raiders worth owning is Zach Miller. However, if your league gives you points for your players being drunk at games, definitely get Sebastian Janikowski on your roster.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 22-29 FG (3-7 from 50+; 5-7 from 40-49). 29 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 106.

  28. Jay Feely, Jets. Bye: 9.
With a rookie quarterback under center, Jay Feely won’t have many opportunities to kick field goals and extra points this season.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 22-25 FG (1-1 from 50+; 5-7 from 40-49). 32 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 105.

  29. Ryan Succop, Chiefs. Bye: 8.
Ryan Succop is a rookie playing in an offense with only one solid skill-position player. Avoid.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 18-24 FG (0-1 from 50+; 3-6 from 40-49). 36 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 101.

  30. Garrett Hartley, Saints. Bye: 5.
Garrett Hartley shanked a 20-yard field goal but hit a 54-yarder against the Bengals. Unfortunately, he’ll be suspended for four games. John Carney will kick for the Saints in the meantime.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 16-21 FG (1-2 from 50+; 4-6 from 40-49). 38 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 92.
