Diontae Johnson, WR, Steelers
Johnson is an excellent punt returner and could end up as a good slot receiver in the NFL, but there isn’t anything that points to him making a significant impact early in his career. He shouldn’t be able to beat out James Washington or even Donte Moncrief, while Ryan Switzer and Eli Rogers have proven themselves as useful slot receivers. I’m not sure what Pittsburgh was thinking here, but we will see, but likely not in his rookie season.
Jalen Hurd, WR, 49ers
The 49ers went with yet another wide receiver for some reason, and he’s likely to have trouble, just like his second-round teammate Deebo Samuel, finding fantasy touches in the offense. Hurd will need to wait it out while he looks to find his niche in the offense. He has plenty of athletic ability as a running back/wide receiver and could quickly develop into a weapon for Kyle Shanahan, but I don’t know if he’ll ever get a significant target share.
Josh Oliver, TE, Jaguars
Oliver isn’t likely to step up and produce early on, but he did land in a good spot due to the lack of tight ends in Jacksonville. He isn’t known for his blocking, so the team must believe in him as a receiver, which is what you want out of a fantasy tight end. Expect him to get his shot at the very least.
Darrell Henderson, RB, Rams
Henderson was amazingly efficient in college and was a big-play machine at running back. He’s small and likely won’t be an every-down back except in spot starts, but he should be able to make things happen in a 10-15-touch role when he has earned the playing time. Todd Gurley isn’t going to lose touches to Henderson, but we know Gurley’s knee isn’t right, and a Malcolm Brown/Henderson backfield would lean toward Henderson for explosiveness.
David Montgomery, RB, Bears
Chicago was an ideal landing spot for Montgomery, as tea, doesn’t see Mike Davis as the starter, while Montgomery was a versatile every-down back in college. His combine numbers were painful, which pushed him to 73rd overall, but the Bears did invest in him by trading down. He should be paired up with Tarik Cohen, taking over Jordan Howard’s role, but with more ability as a receiver. His receptions will be cut due to Cohen though, which should give Montgomery similar work as Howard, which was enough for Howard to put up value numbers last season.
Devin Singletary, RB, Bills
Singletary won’t have much use this season, but he should move up as the old guys, LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore, fall to the wayside. The trouble with Singletary are poor combine numbers and the weak set of teams he faced in college. But Singletary does have the ability and the inside scoop on touches for the future.
Jace Sternberger, TE, Packers
Sternberger is a big-play tight end who should be ready to contribute offensively in the NFL. The Packers need a replacement for Jimmy Graham, who has declined rapidly, and Sternberger should be an excellent fit for Aaron Rodgers at a position defenses usually don’t need to account for as a genuine vertical threat. Graham is the starter, but if anything pushes him off the field, the rookie could contribute soon.
Terry McLaurin, WR, Redskins
If you look at McClaurin’s stats, you won’t be wowed, but he did break out during his senior year and also had a great Senior Bowl. Additionally, he landed on a team with hardly any receivers worth mentioning and with his college quarterback, Dwayne Haskins. Washington’s receiving group will likely be a muddled mess again this year, but McLaurin will get his shot.
Kahale Warring, TE, Texans
Warring didn’t play much football, as he was a six-sport star in high school and a walk-on at San Diego State, but he did catch the eye of scouts and Houston decided to take on the project. His combine results and size fit the bill, so now the Texans will need to coach him up. We’ll wait to see.
Damien Harris, RB, Patriots
Harris should be a good fit in New England’s three-back committee. Sony Michel and James White aren’t going anywhere, but Harris should be able to bump Rex Burkhead to the side, and Michel has enough injury history to see a possibility for Harris as early as this season. The Patriots love using their running backs, and with Rob Gronkowski gone and a rookie receiver likely needed to step up, I expect the running backs to be in line for extra duty. Harris might be a stretch for re-draft this year, especially if he starts getting hyped, but if Michel misses games, you’ll want Harris on your team.
Miles Boykin, WR, Ravens
Boykin is a good upside pick for the Ravens, as he checked all the boxes at the combine and then some. He’s going to be one of those players who we expect to get better as an actual football player while using his elite measurables, but that, of course, doesn’t always work out. For fantasy, he’s going to a place where he could quickly earn work, but with the most run-heavy team in the league. If you have big rosters in your dynasty leagues, grab him to see if he can turn his athleticism into something more.
