2019 Fantasy Football Rankings - Quarterbacks (Aug. 26):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-35
Other Positions: RB | WR | TE | Top 250
- Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs. Bye: 12.
AUG. 11 UPDATE: Patrick Mahomes was a perfect 4-of-4 for 66 yards on his sole drive against the Bengals. He looked just as unstoppable as he was last year. He’s the top fantasy quarterback by a mile, and he’s the only player at the position I’d consider prior to Round 6.
JULY 19 UPDATE: Tyreek Hill won’t be suspended in 2019, which is huge for Patrick Mahomes. His top target, save for Travis Kelce, looked to be the oft-injured Sammy Watkins or rookie Mecole Hardman. That’s no longer the case. Mahomes was already the top fantasy quarterback this season, but the gap between him and the No. 2 signal-caller has expanded.
Patrick Mahomes was my No. 1 fantasy quarterback sleeper last year, and yet his projected numbers didn’t even come close to what he produced. Mahomes is special enough to warrant a first-round draft pick – not often the case for fantasy quarterbacks – but the Tyreek Hill news put the kibosh on that strategy. Mahomes is still good enough to be the top quarterback, but his maximum potential took a hit in the wake of Hill’s off-the-field problems.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 5,000 passing yards. 49 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 250 rushing yards. 3 rushing TDs.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 386.
- Deshaun Watson, QB, Texans. Bye: 10.
AUG. 18 UPDATE: It was another rough night for first-round tackle Tytus Howard against the Lions. The new left tackle surrendered a sack and then went into the locker room with some sort of undisclosed injury. I can’t believe that the Texans have mismanaged their offensive line this poorly. I’ll be surprised if Deshaun Watson doesn’t miss games in 2019. It could be argued that the Texans have the worst blocking in the NFL, which is saying something because there are some very poor offensive lines around the league.
Deshaun Watson matched the yardage projected for him last year, finishing as the No. 4 fantasy quarterback. However, Watson’s projected touchdown total was five short. The problem there was Houston’s issues in the red zone. If the Texans can improve in that regard – a better offensive line would help – Watson will have an even better fantasy season in 2019. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though Houston’s blocking hasn’t improved all that much.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 4,000 passing yards. 30 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 530 rushing yards. 4 rushing TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 306.
- Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks. Bye: 11.
What Russell Wilson does despite having absolutely no offensive line is ridiculous. Getting no help from his blocking, Wilson threw 35 touchdowns and only seven interceptions in 2018. He also rushed for 586 yards and three more scores back in 2017, though those numbers declined last year (376 yards, 0 TDs). Wilson could finish as the top fantasy quarterback in 2019 with better protection, but the Seahawks haven’t provided him with any, unfotunately.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 3,800 passing yards. 34 passing TDs. 9 INTs. 440 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 299.
- Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers. Bye: 11.
Aaron Rodgers is coming off injury-ravaged 2017 and 2018 seasons. He has to be healthy one of these years, but it’s very difficult to trust him at this point. I was hoping his ADP would be low for value purposes, but it seems a bit high at 4.02.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 4,250 passing yards. 32 passing TDs. 6 INTs. 250 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 296.
- Carson Wentz, QB, Eagles. Bye: 10.
Carson Wentz was not quite himself in 2018, thanks to knee and back injuries. Despite this, he was still on pace to throw for 4,000 yards before he was knocked out for the year. Wentz will bounce back next year, and there should be some value attached to him.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 4,200 passing yards. 32 passing TDs. 10 INTs. 240 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 295.
- Cam Newton, QB, Panthers. Bye: 7.
SEPT. 3 UPDATE: Cam Newton was able to practice without limitations. It appears as though he’s over the minor foot injury he suffered in the preseason.
AUG. 24 UPDATE: Cam Newton suffered a mid-foot sprain in the opening preseason game. Newton is getting a stock-up arrow for this because the injury seemed like it would be worse. I downgraded Newton a bit in my rankings, but the Panthers are cautiously optimistic that Newton will be able to play in Week 1.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: The big news surrounding the third preseason game is Cam Newton’s injury. Newton’s shoulder is OK, but he hurt his foot while trying to evade pressure in the pocket. Newton’s tripped on someone’s foot, then began scrambling gingerly. He left the field after that play to get X-rays. The good news is that the X-rays came back negative. The bad news is that Newton left the stadium in a walking boot. However, Ian Rapoport reported that Newton’s injury “doesn’t appear to be serious,” so perhaps Newton will be able to play in the opener.
AUG. 16 UPDATE: Cam Newton’s deep ball has been the “biggest surprise” of Panthers’ training camp, according to Brendan Marks of the Charlotte Observer. This actually shouldn’t be too much of a shock, as we reported months ago that Newton looked great in practice (it’s why I recommended the Panthers at 60/1 to win the Super Bowl back in May.) Still, it’s nice to see that nothing has gone awry since. Newton is one of my top fantasy quarterbacks this year.
JUNE 9 UPDATE: Cam Newton has been cleared to throw in OTAs, which is obviously great news for his fantasy outlook. This backs up what I wrote in the 2019 NFL Betting Props page, where I discussed that Newton looked great at the facility. Newton could be in for a big year, so he might end up being a steal in fantasy drafts.
Cam Newton suffered a shoulder injury in the second half of the season, which greatly affected his performance down the stretch before he was ruled out during the final two games of the season. Newton will bounce back in 2019, especially with an improved offensive line. It sounds as though he’s healthy, which is obviously great news for his 2019 outlook.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 3,600 passing yards. 26 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 570 rushing yards. 6 rushing TDs.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 295.
- Baker Mayfield, QB, Browns. Bye: 7.
AUG. 24 UPDATE: Baker Mayfield certainly looked like he didn’t want to be on the field in Tampa for the preseason dress rehearsal. He was abysmal, as his line of 10-of-26, 72 yards and one interception in a whole half of action was indicative of how poorly he performed. Mayfield made a high number of awful throws, as he had accuracy issues throughout the evening. For example, he overshot tight end Demetrius Harris in the end zone despite having all the time in the world in the pocket. On another play, Mayfield had someone named Derrick Willies open for a substantial gain, but fired the ball way behind the receiver. These types of passes were seen all night, though his pick wasn’t a big deal because he was just trying to make something happen on the final play of the opening half. It would be incredibly troubling if we hadn’t seen a great drive from Mayfield two weeks earlier. Mayfield looked like he showed up to the game intoxicated. Perhaps his visor blinded him. Maybe he went full degenerate and bet on the Buccaneers. Either way, he was horrible, though it should be noted that he threw to scrubs because Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry sat out.
Baker Mayfield was the best rookie quarterback by a mile last year. He threw for 3,725 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2018 despite missing his first two-and-a-half games. The Browns added Odell Beckham Jr., so Mayfield’s numbers could explode.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 4,400 passing yards. 34 passing TDs. 16 INTs. 170 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 294.
- Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons. Bye: 9.
Matt Ryan has taken a step backward from his MVP 2016 campaign, thanks to Steve Sarkisian being a big downgrade at offensive coordinator. Fortunately, Sarkisian is gone, so Ryan should have a decent season. It’ll help that Calvin Ridley has some experience under his belt and also that the offensive line has improved.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 4,650 passing yards. 33 passing TDs. 8 INTs. 110 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 294.
- Drew Brees, QB, Saints. Bye: 9.
Drew Brees failed to throw for 4,000 yards in a season last year for the first time since 2005. He would’ve gotten there had he played in Week 17, but the fact remains that Brees isn’t throwing nearly as much because of an improved running game and a bolstered defense.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 4,200 passing yards. 31 passing TDs. 7 INTs. 10 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 291.
- Jared Goff, QB, Rams. Bye: 9.
Jared Goff had a terrific 2018 fantasy season, throwing for 4,688 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Goff will continue to perform on a high level as long as Sean McVay is coaching him, and he’ll benefit from Cooper Kupp’s return from injury next year.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Stats: 4,500 passing yards. 30 passing TDs. 10 INTs. 70 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2019 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 290.
