2019 Fantasy Football Mock Draft

Aug. 8, 2019.

This is a 2019 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter (@walterfootball. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections every two rounds.

Just a heads up that we have 2019 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening. Check out the forum or follow me on Twitter to find out when the next mock draft will be.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I own the 12th pick in one of my higher-stakes fantasy leagues. It’s standard scoring, but has one keeper. I get to retain Patrick Mahomes for a 10th-round pick, so I’m excited about my chances. Nevertheless, I wanted to practice out of the No. 12 hole.

Leonard Fournette and Tyreek Hill were my top-rated players available. If this were a 3-WR league, I would have gone with Hill and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I like the Smith-Schuster, Odell Beckham and Mike Evans picks, as those receivers provided the most value.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Ezekiel Elliott at fourth overall is too high for my liking, given his holdout potential. He’s 50-50 to play in Week 1, so I would rather avoid him. Todd Gurley is also too much of a risk in Round 1. As I’ve constantly say, you can’t win your league in the first few rounds of your draft, but you can lose it. Taking Gurley gives you a great chance of scrubbing out, and it’s not like he’s so much better than someone else you could take instead.

Also, I love Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, but you can’t take a quarterback or a tight end in the first two rounds.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Again, I went with a running back and a receiver. I couldn’t believe Adam Thielen was available. That was absolutely shocking. I also like Chris Carson, but I was hoping Devonta Freeman or Aaron Jones would fall to me.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Freeman and Jones qualify as the best choices at this juncture. Phillip Lindsay provided great value at the end of Round 4.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Josh Jacobs is on my 2019 Fantasy Football Busts list, so check that out to see why I think he’s being drafted too early.

George Kittle was the worst pick in these two rounds. Kittle is a candidate for regression, and once again, running back and receiver are too thin to spend an early choice on a tight end – especially after doing so in the previous round! It’s nice to experiment in fantasy mocks, but CNN will have one of the worst teams in his fantasy league if he chooses two tight ends with his first three picks, even if he can use one of them as his flex.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Where have all the good running backs gone? That’s something I asked in the chat during this mock draft. All of the running backs disappeared earlier, so I just went with a pair of receivers. I know A.J. Green won’t play until October, but I have three other wideouts I can use until then.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I would have chosen Robby Anderson over Dante Pettis in real life, but I’ve been taking Anderson a lot, and I wanted to see where he would fall. Other receiver picks I liked were Robert Woods and Will Fuller. David Montgmery was a nice choice atop Round 5.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I can’t get behind the Kenyan Drake pick. Not only is he incapable of handling a full workload; he’s also dealing with an injury right now.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Ideally, I would wait until the ninth round to take Devin Singletary, but I don’t think he would’ve lasted that long in a draft with readers of the site. Besides, it’s not like there were many other viable options at running back.

My other pick, Russell Wilson, is proof that you can wait until the eighth round to choose your quarterback.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: If I needed a receiver, I would have considered Geronimo Allison at the wrap-around. Curtis Samuel is another sleeper of mine.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I can’t say I really hated anything here, save for the tight end picks. I don’t see the point in taking a tight end in these two rounds. You can obtain someone just as good in the 11th or 12th frame.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Darwin Thompson and Justice Hill are near the top of my Fantasy Football Sleepers list. As with Devin Singletary, I would have liked to have landed them two rounds later, but I was confident I couldn’t get both in Rounds 11-12.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Cam Newton seems like a steal in the ninth round. I also liked some of my other sleeper selections, including Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Damien Harris and James Washington. I also would have considered Kareem Hunt at 9.12 or 10.01.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Don’t take a defense in the first 10 rounds. Not under any circumstances. It’s worth noting that BCB told me that he was at work and running out of time, so he panicked.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I’m not crazy about Emmanuel Sanders this year, but he will definitely out-produce his 11th-round standing if he’s healthy.

I found my tight end in the 12th round. That’s when you should be selecting your starter at the position unless Travis Kelce, George Kittle or Zach Ertz magically fall to you two rounds below their ADP.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Tony Pollard seems like he could be a steal in the 11th round. He’s worth choosing just in case Ezekiel Elliott continues to hold out.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I still don’t like defenses this early. There’s no reason to choose one until the final round. I also didn’t like the Dak Prescott pick. He has zero upside in fantasy.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Josh Gordon? Why not? He could be reinstated. If so, I’ll be thrilled to have him at a low price. If not, I’ll just drop him and pick up a defense.

Speaking of which, it’s worth noting that I did not choose a defense. I wanted Gordon and a backup quarterback instead. There’s no reason to pick a defense or a kicker in your fantasy drafts. Spend your final picks on high-upside players instead and worry about finding a kicker and a defense just prior to Week 1 beginning.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: High-upside picks include: Tre’Quan Smith and Jakobi Meyers.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Low-upside picks include: Keke Coutee and Cole Beasley.

‘ll be adjusting some of my Fantasy Football Rankings based on these draft results, so check them out. Also, we’ll be doing mock drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening, so come join us!

My Fantasy Team:

QB – Russell Wilson, Seahawks
RB – Leonard Fournette, Jaguars
RB – Chris Carson, Seahawks
WR – Tyreek Hill, Chiefs
WR – Adam Thielen, Vikings
RB/WR – Dante Pettis, WR, 49ers
TE – T.J. Hockenson, Lions
K – Matthew McCrane, Steelers
DEF – None

BN – A.J. Green, WR, Bengals
BN – Devin Singletary, RB, Bills
BN – Darwin Thompson, RB, Chiefs
BN – Justice Hill, RB, Ravens
BN – Emmanuel Sanders, WR, Broncos
BN – Josh Gordon, WR, Patriots
BN – Lamar Jackson, QB, Ravens

This team will look much better in my keeper league with Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback. I’ll be very happy to own this roster with Mahomes. But what about this roster with Russell Wilson instead? I still think it’s very good. It’s not great, but I feel as though I’m strong at running back and receiver, the two positions that are very thin this year.
