June 6, 2009.
We’ll have many 2009 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts throughout the summer, so make sure you check back from time to time. Also, be sure to check out my other 2009 Fantasy Football articles, which will include sleepers, busts, cheat sheets and other things.
ROUND 1:
(1) Team Holder – Adrian Peterson RB
(2) Team Fleck – Michael Turner RB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Matt Forte RB
(4) Team Koller – DeAngelo Williams RB
(5) Team Vitale – Maurice Jones-Drew RB
(6) Team Palmer – LaDainian Tomlinson RB
(7) Team Bounds – Chris Johnson RB
(8) Team Champion – Steven Jackson RB
(9) Team HUTT – Frank Gore RB
(10) Team Race – Larry Fitzgerald WR
(11) Team Riggall – Brandon Jacobs RB
(12) Team Beard – Tom Brady QB
ANALYSIS: I’d like to preface this by saying that I did this mock draft on ESPN.com. I initially planned to do it on a smaller site that has received tons of positive recommendations on the forum.
Things seemed to go well at first. I had the third pick, and I decided on Maurice Jones-Drew.
It was the middle of the second round when four teams seemed to pick instantly. It was suddenly my turn again.
I crossed off the four players who just went off the board. 48 seconds left.
Knowshon Moreno was my BPA, but I knew I could get him in Round 3. So, I decided on whom I would take. Tom Brady or Marques Colston? I have Colston higher on my top 150 board, so I decided on him…
22 seconds left? WTF?
I looked for Colston on the list. Couldn’t find him. 14 seconds left.
So, I alphabetized. Finally found him. Phew. 10 seconds left.
I tried dragging his name over, or whatever they told me to do, and it wouldn’t work. 5 seconds left.
I scrolled down again… 3 seconds left.
I panicked… 2 seconds left.
I clicked my mouse around Colston’s name a couple of times. 1 second left.
Time’s up.
My second-round pick:
MICHAEL CLAYTON
BAH!!!
After talking to myself for five minutes in front of my dog, who stared back quizzically at me, I decided to go back to trusty ESPN.
At any rate, pretty ordinary Round 1… except… DeAngelo Williams No. 4!? Buhahaha! Team Koller is officially the Josh McDaniels-led Denver Broncos of this mock draft.
ROUND 2:
(1) Team Beard – Randy Moss WR
(2) Team Riggall – Steve Slaton RB
(3) Team Race – Andre Johnson WR
(4) Team HUTT – Drew Brees QB
(5) Team Champion – Clinton Portis RB
(6) Team Bounds – Brian Westbrook RB
(7) Team Palmer – Calvin Johnson WR
(8) Team Vitale – Marion Barber RB
(9) Team Koller – Thomas Jones RB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Marques Colston WR
(11) Team Fleck – Steve Smith WR
(12) Team Holder – Kevin Smith RB
MY PICK: I’ve decided that I hate drafting in the top three. By the time I was up again, Knowshon Moreno was the top player on my 2009 Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet.
Knowing I could get Moreno in Round 3, I took Marques Colston. If I were drafting atop Round 2, I could have landed Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson or maybe Randy Moss, and still maintained the opportunity to take Moreno in the third round.
BEST PICK: Clinton Portis and Brian Westbrook in the middle of Round 2? Pretty ridiculous.
WORST PICK: Josh McDaniels, I mean Team Koller, went with Thomas Jones. Nice. He’s only 24th in my 2009 Fantasy Football Running Back Rankings.
ROUND 3:
(1) Team Holder – Ronnie Brown RB
(2) Team Fleck – Marshawn Lynch RB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Knowshon Moreno RB
(4) Team Koller – Roddy White WR
(5) Team Vitale – Reggie Wayne WR
(6) Team Palmer – Terrell Owens WR
(7) Team Bounds – Peyton Manning QB
(8) Team Champion – Ryan Grant RB
(9) Team HUTT – Greg Jennings WR
(10) Team Race – Dwayne Bowe WR
(11) Team Riggall – Brandon Marshall WR
(12) Team Beard – Willie Parker RB
MY PICK: For those who read this site last year, Knowshon Moreno is this year’s Calvin Johnson. Someone laughed at me last summer when I took Johnson over Roy Williams in one of my leagues, and someone like Team Koller will once again scoff when I select Moreno over “great” running backs like Thomas Jones, Marshawn Lynch and Ronnie Brown. I plan on having the last laugh.
BEST PICK: Every dog has its day, and Round 3 was definitely Team Koller’s. I was shocked when he took Roddy White because that was actually a decent selection. Almost as good as mine.
WORST PICK: When you take a player between Rounds 3 and 6, and other fantasy owners have to flip through their cheat sheets just to find the guy to cross him off, one of two things happened: You either know what you’re doing, and you’re taking an ultra fantasy sleeper (Calvin Johnson last year; Knowshon Moreno this year), or you’ve just made the crappiest pick in the draft.
Team Beard just made the crappiest pick in this mock. Willie Parker is a whopping 42nd in my 2009 Fantasy Football Running Back Rankings.
ROUND 4:
(1) Team Beard – Larry Johnson RB
(2) Team Riggall – Darren McFadden RB
(3) Team Race – Pierre Thomas RB
(4) Team HUTT – Anquan Boldin WR
(5) Team Champion – T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR
(6) Team Bounds – Wes Welker WR
(7) Team Palmer – Reggie Bush RB
(8) Team Vitale – Braylon Edwards WR
(9) Team Koller – Kurt Warner QB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Aaron Rodgers QB
(11) Team Fleck – LenDale White RB
(12) Team Holder – Philip Rivers QB
ANALYSIS: Team Koller left. Damn it. I was holding out hope that he would trade next year’s No. 1 pick to move up three spots in order to select Richard Quinn. Oh wait, that’s someone else.
MY PICK: I was hoping Pierre Thomas or Braylon Edwards would fall to me here. Unfortunately, Teams Race and Vitale debacled my dreams, so I had to “settle” for the fourth-ranked player in my 2009 Fantasy Football Quarterback Rankings.
BEST PICK: Race and Vitale – you shall rue the day you took my players.
WORST PICK: As Chris Berman would say, “What the fleck was Team Fleck thinking!?” Seriously, LenDale White? He’s rated a bit higher than Willie Parker in non-pancake scoring leagues.
ROUND 5:
(1) Team Holder – Roy Williams WR
(2) Team Fleck – Hines Ward WR
(3) WalterFootball.com – Antonio Bryant WR
(4) Team Koller – Jonathan Stewart RB
(5) Team Vitale – Tony Romo QB
(6) Team Palmer – Tony Gonzalez TE
(7) Team Bounds – Chad Ochocinco WR
(8) Team Champion – Antonio Gates TE
(9) Team HUTT – Jason Witten TE
(10) Team Race – Joseph Addai RB
(11) Team Riggall – Donovan McNabb QB
(12) Team Beard – DeSean Jackson WR
ANALYSIS: I told you – there is no way Team Koller would have picked Jonathan Stewart.
MY PICK: It was between Antonio Bryant and Chad Ochocinco, but I had the former ranked a bit higher in my 2009 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Rankings. I’m very happy with Bryant as my WR2.
BEST PICK: Nothing that really stood out at me, so I’ll praise Team Bounds for taking the other guy I considered.
WORST PICK: Old Man Hines and No Touchdown Jackson in Round 5? Seriously?
A review of Team Beard’s roster: Tom Brady (reach in Round 1), Randy Moss (New England homer much?), Willie Parker (discussed already), Larry Johnson (fail), DeSean Jackson… Does this guy enjoy taking the worst players ever? If Team Koller is Josh McDaniels, Team Beard is easily Matt Millen.
ROUND 6:
(1) Team Beard – Vincent Jackson WR
(2) Team Riggall – Lee Evans WR
(3) Team Race – Matt Ryan QB
(4) Team HUTT – Derrick Ward RB
(5) Team Champion – Bernard Berrian WR
(6) Team Bounds – Anthony Gonzalez WR
(7) Team Palmer – Jay Cutler QB
(8) Team Vitale – Dallas Clark TE
(9) Team Koller – Owen Daniels TE
(10) WalterFootball.com – Chris Wells RB
(11) Team Fleck – Ben Roethlisberger QB
(12) Team Holder – Santana Moss WR
MY PICK: I considered Chris Wells back in Round 5, but that’s because I have him a lot higher than most publications.
I don’t get why people rank rookie running backs so low. Knowshon Moreno has the offensive line and talent to lead the league in total yards this year, while Wells could be in line for double-digit touchdowns.
But I’m not complaining – I came away with Matt Forte and Chris Johnson in a few of my leagues last year.
BEST PICK: Team Beard bounces back! Maybe he thought that he should stop taking the worst players ever and concentrate on good ones instead.
WORST PICK: What the fleck is Team Fleck thinking!? I sort of like Ben Roethlisberger this year, but not in Round 6.
ROUND 7:
(1) Team Holder – Chris Cooley TE
(2) Team Fleck – Eddie Royal WR
(3) WalterFootball.com – Santonio Holmes WR
(4) Team Koller – Kevin Walter WR
(5) Team Vitale – Laveranues Coles WR
(6) Team Palmer – Jamal Lewis RB
(7) Team Bounds – Greg Olsen TE
(8) Team Champion – Carson Palmer QB
(9) Team HUTT – Steelers Defense
(10) Team Race – John Carlson TE
(11) Team Riggall – Cedric Benson RB
(12) Team Beard – Torry Holt WR
MY PICK: Given that he’s my No. 21 receiver, I love Santonio Holmes as my WR3. I’m pretty happy with my team, and I’ve even stopped talking to myself after that escapade with the other site.
WORST PICK: Nothing that really stands out at me as a possible best pick, but you can’t like Team HUTT’s strategy of taking a defense in Round 7. I have a dream that one day, all fantasy players won’t reach for defenses and will wait to take their kickers until the final two rounds. That day won’t be this year.
ROUND 8:
(1) Team Beard – Kellen Winslow Jr. TE
(2) Team Riggall – Lance Moore WR
(3) Team Race – Willis McGahee RB
(4) Team HUTT – Le’Ron McClain RB
(5) Team Champion – Donald Brown RB
(6) Team Bounds – Darren Sproles RB
(7) Team Palmer – Donnie Avery WR
(8) Team Vitale – Eli Manning QB
(9) Team Koller – Giants Defense
(10) WalterFootball.com – Matt Schaub QB
(11) Team Fleck – Titans Defense
(12) Team Holder – Ravens Defense
ANALYSIS: More defenses, but I don’t mind them at the bottom of Round 8. Team Fleck reached for the Albert Haynesworth-less Titans, but taking New York and Baltimore was fine.
MY PICK: Matt Schaub is my BPA, and even though I have a quarterback already, I couldn’t resist. This pretty much guarantees that I won’t have any problems at the position the entire year… You know, if this were a real league.
WORST PICK: You have to love it that Willis McGahee and Le’Ron McClain were chosen before Ray Rice. Rice will get the majority of the carries this year. McClain will play fullback. McGahee didn’t get much work at the end of the 2008 season, and could be cut. It just surprises me that Team Beard wasn’t involved with one of those two selections.
ROUND 9:
(1) Team Holder – Ahmad Bradshaw RB
(2) Team Fleck – Jerricho Cotchery WR
(3) WalterFootball.com – Derrick Mason WR
(4) Team Koller – Matt Cassel QB
(5) Team Vitale – Felix Jones RB
(6) Team Palmer – Donald Driver WR
(7) Team Bounds – Devin Hester WR
(8) Team Champion – Julius Jones RB
(9) Team HUTT – Michael Crabtree WR
(10) Team Race – Eagles Defense
(11) Team Riggall -Dolphins Defense
(12) Team Beard – Rashard Mendenhall RB
ANALYSIS: Palmer and Race have joined Koller as people who left the mock draft early. Seriously, why even join a mock draft if you’re not going to stay until the end? There’s a reason this thing runs 16 rounds.
Worse yet, neither Palmer nor Race clicked the “Auto Pick” button, so we all had to wait three minutes. Palmer and Race, you have been forever immortalized on WalterFootball.com as jerks.
MY PICK: Close call between Ray Rice and Derrick Mason. I chose Mason because I already had three running backs and I needed a reliable backup wideout. Three minutes later, I would regret this decision, and if I had to do it over, I would have taken Rice. Damn 90-second ticker.
WORST PICK: I found it hilarious that Team Koller chose Matt Cassel. I know this was an auto-pick selection, but it’s exactly what Josh McDaniels would have done. Those expecting Cassel to match his 2008 numbers will be disappointed.
ROUND 10:
(1) Team Beard – Buccaneers Defense
(2) Team Riggall – Ted Ginn Jr. WR
(3) Team Race – Earnest Graham RB
(4) Team HUTT – Percy Harvin WR
(5) Team Champion – Bobby Engram WR
(6) Team Bounds – Ray Rice RB
(7) Team Palmer – Vikings Defense
(8) Team Vitale – Kevin Curtis WR
(9) Team Koller – Fred Taylor RB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Zach Miller TE
(11) Team Fleck – Tim Hightower RB
(12) Team Holder – Steve Breaston WR
ANALYSIS: Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! Team Bounds took Ray Rice. I think I’m going to cry.
MY PICK: I needed a tight end, and Zach Miller was the best one available. Miller is eighth in my 2009 Fantasy Football Tight End Rankings, so this just proves that it’s better to wait on a tight end if you can’t land the top three guys.
WORST PICK: Team Beard has Willie Parker, Larry Johnson and now Tampa Bay’s defense on his roster. I’m now convinced that he’s from 2006 and has time traveled to the future to become the world’s worst fantasy football player ever.
ROUND 11:
(1) Team Holder – Kyle Orton QB
(2) Team Fleck – Matt Hasselbeck QB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Jerious Norwood RB
(4) Team Koller – Chester Taylor RB
(5) Team Vitale – Deion Branch WR
(6) Team Palmer – David Garrard QB
(7) Team Bounds – Justin Gage WR
(8) Team Champion – Patrick Crayton WR
(9) Team HUTT – Ricky Williams RB
(10) Team Race – Domenik Hixon WR
(11) Team Riggall – Chris Chambers WR
(12) Team Beard – Sammy Morris RB
MY PICK: No Ray Rice, so I decided on Jerious Norwood as my RB4. Michael Turner will struggle this year – check my 2009 Fantasy Football Running Back Rankings to see why – so Norwood will have more touches behind a very solid offensive line.
WORST PICK: Can’t really find one. Koller and Beard didn’t even manage to screw up in this round.
ROUND 12:
(1) Team Beard – Fred Jackson RB
(2) Team Riggall – Patriots Defense
(3) Team Race – Stephen Gostkowski K
(4) Team HUTT – Ryan Longwell K
(5) Team Champion – Trent Edwards QB
(6) Team Bounds – LeSean McCoy RB
(7) Team Palmer – David Akers RB
(8) Team Vitale – Laurence Maroney RB
(9) Team Koller – Nate Kaeding K
(10) WalterFootball.com – Hakeem Nicks WR
(11) Team Fleck – Tony Scheffler, TE
(12) Team Holder – Mason Crosby K
MY PICK: If I loved Hakeem Nicks any more, I’d be having his babies. Nicks is actually 35th in my 2009 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Rankings, which would make him a WR3. I plan on owning him in every league I’m in.
BEST PICK: OMG HAKEEM NICKS OMG OMG HAKEEM NICKS OMG.
In all seriousness, I have to give Team Beard credit. Fred Jackson was a solid pick. I considered him over Jerious Norwood a round earlier.
WORST PICK: Way too easy. Team Race, you suck. Team HUTT, you suck. Team Koller, you suck. Team Holder, you suck.
There is no point in wasting a mid-round pick on a kicker. If Matthew Berry saw this, he’d have a heart attack, so please, don’t e-mail him a link to this page.
ROUND 13:
(1) Team Holder – Leon Washington RB
(2) Team Fleck – Correll Buckhalter RB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Chargers Defense
(4) Team Koller – Muhsin Muhammad WR
(5) Team Vitale – Jeremy Shockey TE
(6) Team Palmer – Dustin Keller TE
(7) Team Bounds – Joey Galloway WR
(8) Team Champion – Michael Bush RB
(9) Team HUTT – Jake Delhomme QB
(10) Team Race – Panthers Defense
(11) Team Riggall – Justin Fargas RB
(12) Team Beard – Jason Elam K
MY PICK: Just got my sixth-ranked defense in Round 13. Happy time!
BEST PICK: The aptly named Team Champion comes away with Michael Bush. Bush won’t start right away, but there’s a very good chance he could be carrying the load behind a very good run-blocking offensive line by the end of the season. Could Bush be this year’s fantasy MVP?
WORST PICK: I’m actually shocked that Team Beard wasn’t the first to take a kicker. But Beard made up for it by selecting one who just turned 39.
ROUND 14:
(1) Team Beard – Kevin Boss TE
(2) Team Riggall – Visanthe Shiancoe TE
(3) Team Race – Shaun Hill QB
(4) Team HUTT – Jason Campbell QB
(5) Team Champion – Jeremy Maclin WR
(6) Team Bounds – Rob Bironas K
(7) Team Palmer – Chad Pennington QB
(8) Team Vitale – Steve Smith WR
(9) Team Koller – Joe Flacco QB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Shonn Greene RB
(11) Team Fleck – Mark Clayton WR
(12) Team Holder – Nick Folk K
MY PICK: I love my rookie running backs. Thomas Jones is 31 and is probably playing his final season as a Jet. The team obviously likes Shonn Greene, and at the very worst, he’s going to get the goal-line carries this year. I love going for upside in the later rounds.
WORST PICK: Kickers in Round 14 – bad, but not terrible. Chad Pennington in any round? Worst pick ever.
ROUND 15:
(1) Team Holder – Neil Rackers K
(2) Team Fleck – Tashard Choice RB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Brian Robiskie WR
(4) Team Koller – Robbie Gould K
(5) Team Vitale – Jets Defense
(6) Team Palmer – Josh Morgan WR
(7) Team Bounds – Redskins Defense
(8) Team Champion – Bears Defense
(9) Team HUTT – Michael Jenkins WR
(10) Team Race – Sage Rosenchoker QB
(11) Team Riggall – Brady Quinn QB
(12) Team Beard – Chris Henry WR
MY PICK: Again, upside. Brian Robiskie is arguably the most pro-ready receiver of all the rookie wideouts. He’ll be starting in Cleveland. It wouldn’t shock me at all if he recorded 1,000 yards.
ROUND 16:
(1) Team Beard – Earl Bennett WR
(2) Team Riggall – Josh Brown K
(3) Team Race – Jamaal Charles RB
(4) Team HUTT – Nate Washington WR
(5) Team Champion – Kris Brown K
(6) Team Bounds – Miles Austin WR
(7) Team Palmer – Maurice Morris RB
(8) Team Vitale – Adam Vinatieri K
(9) Team Koller – Packers Defense
(10) WalterFootball.com – Garrett Hartley K
(11) Team Fleck – John Kasay K
(12) Team Holder – Edgerrin James RB
ANALYSIS: Interesting final pick. Depending on where he lands, Edgerrin James might have some upside.
MY PICK: My kicker is Garrett Hartley. The way I see it is, he’ll have lots of scoring opportunities in New Orleans’ offense. And if he sucks, I’ll just pick up another kicker. That’s exactly why you should wait until the final round to take your kicker.
So, bravo to me, Fleck, Vitale, Champion and Riggall. Matthew Berry would consider us all his friends. And unlike leaving a mock draft in the fourth round, that’s something to be proud of.
