MISSING

  1. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos. Bye: 9.
AUG. 10 UPDATE: Knowshon Moreno isn’t expected to play this preseason. He should be ready for kickoff weekend, but this is still bad news. The thing is, many people are starting to take notice of this as Moreno’s ADP is falling. I was just able to obtain him in the fifth round of an experts league, so you might be able to get him at a great value as well.

AUG. 5 UPDATE: Knowshon Moreno is expected back for the second preseason game after a scary injury a few days ago. This should quell any current concerns, but Moreno has shown that he’s pretty injury-prone thus far in his young career.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Knowshon Moreno’s knee injury limited him early in the season. A rookie wall, acknowledged by both he and his coaching staff, limited him late in the year. Josh McDaniels’ obsession with changing Denver’s blocking scheme limited Moreno throughout his entire rookie campaign.

Ryan Clady will miss the first few games of the season, but all isn’t lost because Denver drafted two interior linemen, Zane Beadles and J.D. Walton. With Moreno in better shape, he’ll have an improved season. Unfortunately, his production won’t be maximized because opposing defenses won’t have any respect for Kyle Orton or Brady Quinn.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 980 rushing yards. 31 catches. 275 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 173.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 204.

  2. C.J. Spiller, RB, Bills. Bye: 6.
AUG. 20 UPDATE: C.J. Spiller is awesome. He put the Bills on the scoreboard on the opening drive against the Colts with an electrifying 31-yard run in which he made three defenders miss. With the help of another nice 12-yard spurt, Spiller finished the contest with 54 yards and the aforementioned score on just 10 carries. Spiller should be a solid RB2 this year, especially in PPR formats. However, don’t expect a season resembling Chris Johnson’s 2009 campaign; Buffalo’s offensive line is terrible and really pales in comparison to Tennessee’s front. The Bills also lack a dual rushing threat at quarterback to keep defenses honest.

AUG. 14 UPDATE: With Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch injured, C.J. Spiller will have more reps with the first-team offense going forward. Spiller opened things up with an 11-yard gain himself at Washington. Unfortunately, none of his plays stood out after that. Spiller finished with 16 yards on four rushes. He didn’t catch a pass.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: According to John Clayton, C.J. Spiller will receive about 12 carries per game. Ah, now I see why the Bills spent the No. 9 overall pick on him. But all Buffalo bashing aside, Spiller is an intriguing PPR fantasy player because he figures to catch at least 60 balls this season. He won’t see the end zone much, but he’ll rack up the receptions and total yardage.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 900 rushing yards. 44 catches. 425 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 168.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 212.

  3. Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, Giants. Bye: 8.
SEPT. 3 UPDATE: Ahmad Bradshaw once again started the game and out-played Brandon Jacobs. Bradshaw totaled 26 yards on four carries to go along with a 17-yard reception. He’s undervalued right now because many still believe that Jacobs is the starter.

AUG. 30 UPDATE: Ahmad Bradshaw once again started for the Giants and looked like the more impressive running back, showing a nice burst and knocking helpless defenders off with a powerful stiff-arm. Bradshaw had 22 yards on seven carries, but that YPC is skewed because three of those attempts were failed tries in short yardage. Brandon Jacobs totaled 41 yards on six attempts, but most of that came on a 29-yard burst. Jacobs also saw some time with the second-team offense in the third quarter, which is good news for Bradshaw’s fantasy prospects.

AUG. 17 UPDATE: Ahmad Bradshaw started the game for the Giants and actually received more work than Brandon Jacobs. Bradshaw couldn’t get anything on the ground behind a skeleton-crew offensive line, but caught two passes for 58 yards.

AUG. 3 UPDATE: Despite there being reports that Ahmad Bradshaw is banged up, Bradshaw apparently looks as quick and spry as ever in training camp. If healthy, Bradshaw is a running back with a ton of upside given Brandon Jacobs’ injury history.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Ahmad Bradshaw totaled nearly 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns last season. The good news is that 11 of Bradshaw’s 21 receptions came in the final four weeks of the year. The bad news is that Bradshaw’s total yardage and scores will drop if Brandon Jacobs is healthy, which appears to be the case – for now. Still, Bradshaw’s a decent mid-round option at running back considering Jacobs’ fragility.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 950 rushing yards. 35 catches. 300 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 167.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 202.

  4. Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins. Bye: 5.
Dating back to high school, Ronnie Brown has never carried the load and remained healthy. He has avoided the IR only when he has shared carries. Now at 28 and coming off a Lisfranc fracture, it’ll take a miracle for Brown to play more than 12 games this season. In those 12 games, however, Brown will be a big producer for you.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 825 rushing yards. 27 catches. 225 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 165.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 192.

  5. Matt Forte, RB, Bears. Bye: 8.
I can’t believe I’m saying this because he was so terrible last year, but Matt Forte was great against the Raiders. The big play that everyone saw was an 89-yard score in the first quarter, but Forte also had gains of 12 and eight yards, finishing with 109 yards on five carries in one quarter of work. Unlike last season, Forte looks quick and in shape.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 925 rushing yards. 33 catches. 260 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 160.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 193.

  6. Cadillac Williams, RB, Buccaneers. Bye: 4.
AUG. 24 UPDATE: Cadillac Williams had only two carries for seven yards against Kansas City, but that’s a good thing. Raheem Morris is set on Cadillac being his every-down runner and was anxious to get him out of the game to prevent an injury from happening.

AUG. 15 UPDATE: As someone wrote on GameCenter: “catilac is back!” It’s true – Cadillac Williams is back to his old self. He rushed for 21 yards on four carries in the exhibition opener, looking much more spry than backup Derrick Ward. Cadillac, who is actually healthy for a change, is a solid RB3 this fantasy season. He’s going too low in most fantasy drafts.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Cadillac Williams is always a huge injury risk, but he does have upside this fantasy season. Cadillac rushed for 836 yards and seven total touchdowns on a 3.9 average last year despite playing with abysmal quarterbacks. Now that Josh Freeman is in his second year and has talented receivers (Arrelious Benn, Mike Williams) to work with, defenses won’t be able to focus entirely on Cadillac. Tampa’s expected improved offense will also give Cadillac more goal-line opportunities. The only question is if he can stay healthy.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 925 rushing yards. 18 catches. 220 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 156.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 174.

  7. Marion Barber, RB, Cowboys. Bye: 4.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Marion Barber started at San Diego and played the entire first and third drives. He and Felix Jones seem like they’ll be rotating series this season, though Barber should still get the work at the goal line.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Marion Barber will take a back seat to Felix Jones this season, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid Barber in your fantasy drafts. Barber should still receive all the goal-line work, and may approach double-digit touchdowns in 2010. Also, Felix Jones doesn’t have the best injury history. If Jones goes down, Barber will be in line for more carries.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 830 rushing yards. 20 catches. 160 receiving yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 153.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 173.

  8. Ricky Williams, RB, Dolphins. Bye: 5.
Ricky Williams is 33 and has more than 2,100 career carries on his resume. Those are two huge red flags, but just remember how brittle Ronnie Brown is. Brown will undoubtedly get hurt and miss significant time, meaning Williams should receive a substantial amount of carries in 2010. Miami really needs to address the running back position next offseason.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 850 rushing yards. 25 catches. 190 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 152.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 177.

  9. Chris Wells, RB, Cardinals. Bye: 6.
AUG. 30 UPDATE: Tim Hightower was once again the starter in Arizona’s third preseason game. For the Chris Wells believers shrugging this off, consider the following:

    1. Wells didn’t touch the ball until the 13:30 mark of the second quarter.

    2. Wells dropped a pass and fumbled in the red zone – two things that certainly won’t help him receive more touches.

    3. Wells had just 14 yards on eight attempts and didn’t look good at all.

Wells is going WAY TOO EARLY in most fantasy drafts. I would advise against drafting him.

AUG. 24 UPDATE: To the chagrin of all Chris Wells owners, Tim Hightower started at Tennessee. Not only that; Wells didn’t even receive a touch until the 8:22 mark of the second quarter. I’m not buying that Hightower will keep receiving more touches than Wells. However, it’s really disconcerting that Ken Whisenhunt trusts Hightower more because of Wells’ deficiencies in terms of catching the football and being a third-down back (pass protection).

AUG. 15 UPDATE: Tim Hightower started the preseason opener for Arizona. In fact, Chris Wells didn’t get a touch until the third drive. Wells saw a ton of action (11 carries, 36 yards), but most of that came when the first team was off the field. I’m not nearly as high on Wells as others are; Hightower will be a factor, and Wells won’t get nearly as many goal-line opportunities with Matt Leinart under center instead of Kurt Warner.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Chris Wells will probably be overdrafted in most leagues based solely on his potential. He scored six touchdowns in the final eight games of the 2009 season. However, I’m not as optimistic. With Kurt Warner gone, opposing defenses will be able to focus on shutting down Arizona’s rushing attack. And don’t forget that Tim Hightower will steal most of the receptions.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 925 rushing yards. 16 catches. 140 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 148.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 164.

  10. Felix Jones, RB, Cowboys. Bye: 4.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: So much for Felix Jones being the featured back this year. Marion Barber started at San Diego and played the entire first drive. Jones was in on the second possession, then Barber and Jones again. It appears as though the two runners will rotate series for now. It’s hard to like either back all that much right now.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: From ESPN reporters, to Cowboys beat writers, to fat kids working for fantasy Web sites, everyone believes Felix Jones will be the featured back this season. And so do I. Jerry Jones wants Felix to touch the ball 15-20 times per game, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen. If Felix can stay healthy, he’ll have about 250 touches this season, which should give him around 1,400 total yards. Unfortunately, he won’t get any of the goal-line work.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 875 rushing yards. 30 catches. 240 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 147.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 177.

  11. Reggie Bush, RB, Saints. Bye: 10.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Reggie Bush caught all seven targets thrown to him in the third preseason game for 70 yards. Bush also had three carries for 16 yards. He has really picked up where he left off during his impressive playoff run. He’s undervalued right now.

AUG. 22 UPDATE: See, Texans? Maybe you should have drafted Reggie Bush after all. Bush ran with authority in between the tackles against Houston, gaining 49 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Forum member Whatdoyouwant711 pointed out that Bush may have just wanted to get revenge on the Texans. That’s a great point, but we also saw this from Bush in the playoffs this past January. It’ll be interesting to see if he continues to play this way going forward. If so, he could be an amazing PPR flex option this year.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: If Reggie Bush can stay healthy – and that’s a huge IF – he could compile around 1,300 total yards and eight touchdowns. It’s more likely, however, that he’ll miss 3-4 games and accumulate 75 percent of those projected stats.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 575 rushing yards. 60 catches. 460 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 145.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 205.

  12. Brandon Jacobs, RB, Giants. Bye: 8.
AUG. 17 UPDATE: Ahmad Bradshaw started the game for the Giants and actually received more work than Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs got all of the goal-line touches and scored on the third of three tries, but wasn’t involved much otherwise.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: Buy low. Brandon Jacobs went from 1,089 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns to 835 rushing yards and five scores. I think we’ll get something in between for 2010, as Jacobs played hurt all last year. His running style makes him very susceptible to injury, so he’ll always be a huge risk. However, I think he’ll be undervalued in most fantasy leagues based on how miserably he played in 2009.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 800 rushing yards. 15 catches. 130 receiving yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 147.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 162.

  13. LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, Jets. Bye: 7.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: I can’t believe I’m writing this, but LaDainian Tomlinson looks like the same dominant back we watched a few years ago. He inexplicably has his speed, burst and power back. He totaled 86 yards on 11 carries against the Redskins.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: LaDainian Tomlinson actually impressed me in his preseason debut with the Jets. He rushed for just 17 yards on eight carries, but had a 14-yard touchdown scamper called back because of a penalty. He also had a 14-yard reception. Tomlinson inexplicably showed some of the quickness and burst he lacked in 2009. Shonn Greene will definitely get the bulk of the carries – including the touches inside the 5-yard line – but Tomlinson could turn out to be a decent flex option in PPR leagues.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 700 rushing yards. 40 catches. 325 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 138.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 178.

  14. Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins. Bye: 9.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Clinton Portis had two carries and two targets thrown his way. He rushed for 14 yards on those two attempts. He didn’t look special or anything, but he really outshined Larry Johnson, and now has to be the favorite to lead Washington’s sorry running back corps in carries.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: I’m against running backs with 2,100 carries or more on their resume. Once most players reach that figure, they suffer a complete freefall. Portis’ carry total stands at 2,176. I understand the appeal with Portis working with Mike Shanahan again, but he’s just not the same player he was back in 2002 and 2003.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 775 rushing yards. 26 catches. 175 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 131.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 157.

  15. Jerome Harrison, RB, Browns. Bye: 8.
SEPT. 4 UPDATE: With Montario Hardesty out for the year, Jerome Harrison is the favorite to be the feature back in Cleveland. Don’t go crazy and draft Harrison in the first seven rounds though; he has been really ineffective this preseason, and the more impressive Peyton Hillis could eat into his touches.

AUG. 29 UPDATE: Stay away from Jerome Harrison. A week after fumbling twice against the Rams, Harrison lost the football yet again in this contest. Harrison was benched afterward for the rest of the half. He ran for 34 yards on 11 carries, and was overshadowed by Peyton Hillis, who compiled 26 rushing yards on seven carries, 40 receiving yards off four catches and a touchdown. Hillis is awesome; it’s a shame Cleveland spent such a high pick on Montario Hardesty because I’d like to see him get as many touches as possible.

AUG. 24 UPDATE: Jerome Harrison did not have a good second preseason game. He gained just 13 yards on five carries. More importantly, he fumbled the ball TWICE on his first two carries. It was pouring in Cleveland, but there’s still no excuse for that. This type of performance could give Eric Mangini more of an incentive to use Montario Hardesty once the rookie runner is healthy again.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: I guess Mike Holmgren was at the buffet when Jerome Harrison tore it up at the end of the 2009 season. There really was no need to spend such a high pick on another running back. It’s unfortunate, but Montario Hardesty could take as much as half of Harrison’s touches away, including any goal-line work.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 800 rushing yards. 33 catches. 250 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 129.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 162.

  16. Leon Washington, RB, Seahawks. Bye: 5.
SEPT. 6 UPDATE: Leon Washington has been my favorite Seahawks fantasy running back for the past couple of weeks. Julius Jones’ release only helps.

SEPT. 3 UPDATE: Julius Jones started the preseason finale for Seattle. He rushed for just 18 yards on six yards, and was predictably out-played by Justin Forsett (6 carries, 31 yards). The Seahawks running back who came out the winner? Leon Washington. Pete Carroll opted to sit Washington, which tells me that Carroll really values Washington and didn’t want to risk injury to the former Jet. Washington is definitely the Seattle runner to own, especially considering how early Forsett is still going in most drafts.

AUG. 27 UPDATE: Leon Washington has been working with the first team in practice this week. Washington, now healthy, looked like the best running back on the field for Seattle in their second preseason game. The former Jet is a great late-round sleeper.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Leon Washington is coming off a fractured fibula and tibia, so he’s a risky fantasy pick. He’ll probably receive a third of Seattle’s carries and about 40 catches as the third-down back.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 700 rushing yards. 34 catches. 275 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 161.

  17. Willis McGahee, RB, Ravens. Bye: 8.
Unless Ray Rice gets injured, Willis McGahee is only going to have about 125 touches this year. However, he’s still a decent fantasy option because he’ll likely score double-digit touchdowns in Baltimore’s high-octane offense McGahee notched 11 scores in 2009. He’s great for touchdown-only leagues.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 575 rushing yards. 16 catches. 100 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 143.

  18. Peyton Hillis, RB, Browns. Bye: 8.
I like Peyton Hillis as a late-round flier now that Montario Hardesty is out for the year. Hillis, a fan favorite, has been Cleveland’s best running back this preseason. At the very least, he’ll shoulder the goal-line work.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 680 rushing yards. 20 catches. 150 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 125.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 145.

  19. Michael Bush, RB, Raiders. Bye: 10.
SEPT. 4 UPDATE: More bad speculative news for Michael Bush. Oakland Tribune beat writer Jerry McDonald predicts that Bush could miss a quarter of the 2010 season or more after talking to an orthopedic surgeon. Bush is still well worth a pick in Round 11 or later though.

AUG. 30 UPDATE: Bad news for anyone who drafted Michael Bush – he broke his thumb in this game and could miss a couple of weeks. He hasn’t been ruled out for Week 1. I don’t expect Bush to play in the opener, but a Week 3 return is reasonable. The good news is that Bush looked good when he was on the field. He rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. More importantly, he took the ball into the end zone when Oakland was on the 1-yard line, so it’s clear that he’ll have the goal-line touches when he returns to the lineup.

AUG. 26 UPDATE: Surprise, surprise. Darren McFadden is still having problems with his hamstring and is unlikely to play against the 49ers. This gives Michael Bush yet another opportunity to keep impressing the coaching staff. I’m liking Bush more and more each week.

AUG. 14 UPDATE: Michael Bush received all of the early carries with Darren McFadden out. Bush looked great going up against Dallas’ impressive front seven, rushing for 31 yards on seven carries. With Al Davis no longer calling the shots, Bush looks like he has the starting running back gig nearly secured.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: If it were announced that Michael Bush would be the every-down running back for the Raiders this season, he might be in my top 25 overall. Bush is very talented and somehow mustered 4.8 yards per carry last year (589 rush yards, 17 receptions, 107 receiving yards, 3 TDs) despite playing with a horrific offensive line and no quarterback. The Raiders have upgraded both areas this offseason, meaning their ground attack will be more effective going forward.

The problem? Darren McFadden. The Raiders are so financially invested in McFadden that they’ll probably give him the opportunity before Bush. McFadden isn’t very good though, and it’s only a matter of time before Oakland realizes that he’s nothing more than a third-down back. Once Bush starts receiving 20-plus carries per contest, he’ll be a legitimate RB2. When/if that time comes is anyone’s guess, however.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 800 rushing yards. 12 catches. 80 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 124.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 136.

  20. Darren Sproles, RB, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Darren Sproles will once again be San Diego’s third-down back. He’s a solid flex player in PPR leagues because of his high reception totals, but he’s not nearly as valuable in other formats. Sproles just doesn’t get the carries or the red-zone work.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 380 rushing yards. 45 catches. 490 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 168.
