2015 Fantasy Football – 20 Sleepers (Sept. 8):
This is a list of my favorite 2015 fantasy football sleepers – underrated players who are going way later than they should. The Average Draft Position (ADP) is found on FantasyFootballCalculator.com.
- Kendall Wright, WR, Titans. Bye: 4. ADP: 11.02.
Kendall Wright’s plummeted from his second to his third year; his yardage went from 1,079 to 715, though he did score four more times. Wright has yet to play with a legitimate starting quarterback, but that will change as soon as he steps onto the field with Marcus Mariota. Wright has reportedly developed strong chemistry with Mariota in training camp, and they looked good together in the preseason. All signs point to Wright having a career year.
- Stevie Johnson, WR, Chargers. Bye: 10. ADP: 10.09.
One player who could benefit from Antonio Gates’ suspension is Stevie Johnson. The former Bill and 49er’s arrow was already pointing up, as Philip Rivers allowed his former slot receiver Eddie Royal to revive his career. Johnson could have similar success, especially with Gates out. Rivers recently told the media that he was most excited about Johnson fitting into his offense this season, and the two showed great chemistry in the third preseason game.
- Dion Lewis, RB, Patriots. Bye: 4. ADP: Undrafted.
Jonas Gray was released, so who’s going to lead the Patriots in touches when LeGarrette Blount is out? What about Dion Lewis, who was solid in the preseason? It appears as though Lewis could have a substantial role in New England’s offense, and yet he’s not on anyone’s radar. He’s going undrafted in most mocks.
- Breshad Perriman, WR, Ravens. Bye: 9. ADP: 12.01.
Breshad Perriman received so much hype earlier in the summer. That has completely disappeared because he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Fortunately, that has caused his ADP to drop considerably, and I now think he’s a major value in Round 12. What are the Ravens going to do, play crappy receivers over him when he gets healthy? Remember, Odell Beckham Jr. did nothing prior to the middle of the season last year and then exploded. Perriman could do the same.
- Jordan Reed, TE, Redskins. Bye: 8. ADP: Undrafted.
Jordan Reed has been terribly injury-prone throughout his career thus far, but that may change. According to a report, Reed has made an effort to eat healthier and to stretch more in order to avoid injuries. He could finally live up to expectations, especially with Niles Paul out.
- Cam Newton, QB, Panthers. Bye: 11. ADP: 10.05.
I’m down on Cam Newton without Kelvin Benjamin, but so is everyone else. I saw him drop to the 11th round in two real 12-team drafts I’ve been a part of, which I think is insane. Newton is still a borderline QB1 because of his rushing ability.
- Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos. Bye: 8. ADP: 10.10.
Montee Ball is going several rounds earlier than Ronnie Hillman, which is absurd, considering that the latter is way ahead on the depth chart. In fact, Ball is fighting just to be the No. 3 back. Hillman has been excellent this preseason, so he’ll get touches, even with C.J. Anderson in the lineup. And if Anderson goes down, you’ll have an RB1 at your disposal. Hillman’s ADP has risen from the 13th to the 10th round, but I still think I’d take him at the end of the 10th frame. The value is gone, unfortunately.
- Tyler Eifert, TE, Bengals. Bye: 7. ADP: 10.03.
Tyler Eifert played just one game this past season because of a shoulder injury. I liked his chances of breaking out, but he never had a shot. Perhaps that’ll happen in 2015, but his upside will always be limited by Andy Dalton. Still, he’s worth taking in Round 10.
- Thomas Rawls, RB, Seahawks. Bye: 9. ADP: Undrafted.
Robert Turbin has been waived, and Christine Michael has been traded. An injury to Marshawn Lynch is now the only thing standing in the way of Thomas Rawls producing RB2 numbers at the very least. He has suddenly become one of the top handcuffs to own.
- Markus Wheaton, WR, Steelers. Bye: 11. ADP: 8.04.
Martavis Bryant has gotten all of the offseason hype, but Ben Roethlisberger has been praising Markus Wheaton this entire time. Wheaton is actually going to start over Bryant, and this just isn’t offseason hype; Roethlisberger and Wheaton had a terrific rapport in the second preseason game. Unfortunately, Wheaton’s ADP has risen to the eighth round, meaning he’s not such a great value anymore.
- Ty Montgomery, WR, Packers. Bye: 7. ADP: 13.09.
Aaron Rodgers will make sure that the third receiver in his offense is productive. Jeff Janis has a chance to be that player, but it appears that Ty Montgomery is the leader for that post. I wouldn’t hesitate to draft him in Rounds 12-13, even with James Jones on the roster.
- Denard Robinson, RB, Jaguars. Bye: 8. ADP: 13.11.
Denard Robinson could be Jacksonville’s starting running back in Week 1, yet he’s being chosen in the 13th round. Think about how absurd that is for a second. Of course, T.J. Yeldon could take over as the primary ball-carrier, but was injured for a while. Robinson has played well in relief, so he’s worth a late flier.
- Brandon Coleman, WR, Saints. Bye: 11. ADP: 12.08.
Brandon Coleman has drawn tons of positive reports during training camp, and there’s now speculation that he could be the team’s third receiver. Coleman is an undrafted free agent from 2014, but he’s a massive target at 6-foot-6. At the very least, he’ll be a red-zone target for Drew Brees. He has major upside and is definitely worth considering in the late rounds.
- Bishop Sankey, RB, Titans. Bye: 4. ADP: 8.07.
Bishop Sankey had a rookie year to forget, but he has looked like a new man this offseason. There were positive reports about him throughout training camp, but I finally believed it when I witnessed him gash the Rams’ defense in the preseason. Sankey has improved tremendously, so he’s well worth a pick in the middle of the eighth frame.
- Phillip Dorsett, WR, Colts. Bye: 10. ADP: 14.02.
Phillip Dorsett was involved heavily in Indianapolis’ preseason opener, and even though he fumbled and ran a bad route, the coaching staff was quick to praise him for the positive things they saw. The Colts plan to use more three-receiver sets this year, and owning the No. 3 wideout in Indianapolis’ offense isn’t a bad thing – especially if you can acquire him in the 14th round of your draft.
- Anquan Boldin, WR, 49ers. Bye: 10. ADP: 9.11.
Anquan Boldin was the only productive San Francisco receiver this past season, registering 83 catches for 1,062 yards and five touchdowns. Boldin has defied Father Time thus far, as he did all of this as a 34-year-old. Boldin will slow down eventually, but he has shown no signs of doing so. It’s amazing to me that his ADP is almost in the 10th round.
- Charles Clay, TE, Bills. Bye: 8. ADP: Undrafted.
Charles Clay is coming off a down year because he battled through a knee injury. He’s now in Buffalo, where Matt Cassel will target him frequently because of his small arm. Clay could have a big year if he can manage to stay healthy.
- Marcus Mariota, QB, Titans. Bye: 4. ADP: 13.12.
Someone needs to explain to me why Jameis Winston is being chosen before Marcus Mariota. Do people think Winston is going to run around a lot? Because he won’t. Mariota is the superior athlete and better fantasy option. He’s a solid QB2.
- Matt Jones, RB, Redskins. Bye: 8. ADP: 12.11.
I’m not into owning handcuffs, but if you are in the market for one, definitely consider Matt Jones. The third-round rookie has been impressive in the preseason thus far, so I could see him being extremely productive if Alfred Morris ever goes down.
- Brian Quick, WR, Rams. Bye: 6. ADP: 10.03.
Brian Quick got off to a hot start, tallying 375 yards and three touchdowns in six full games last year. Translate that over 16 contests, and you get 973 yards and eight scores. Quick has WR3 potential if the Rams get better quarterback play from Nick Foles in 2015.
