2010 Fantasy Football: Training Camp Fantasy Stock

With training camp underway, there will be updates daily to this 2010 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock page if anything noteworthy happens.

If there’s an injury or a player surprising/disappointing, I’ll let you know about it and adjust my 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings accordingly.

2010 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock – Week of Aug. 9

AUG. 14

Percy Harvin, WR, Vikings
The Vikings just received a roster exemption for Percy Harvin, indicating that he won’t practice with the team for a while. Harvin’s migraine problems just won’t go away. He could easily be fine for the opener, but it seems like he’ll miss a few games with this ailment.

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers
According to beat writer Ed Bouchette, Ben Roethlisberger is enjoying the best training camp of his career. I thought Roethlisberger would struggle amid all the rape allegations, but he apparently has focused on football this offseason. He deserves a ton of credit for that.

Demaryius Thomas, WR, Broncos
Demaryius Thomas continues to miss time with his fractured foot. As with Dez Bryant, this wouldn’t be a big deal if Thomas were a veteran, but the missed reps will severely eat into his 2010 production.

AUG. 12

Brandon Jacobs, RB, Giants
Brian Baldinger, who attended Giants training camp, recently noted that Brandon Jacobs has his “burst” back. Jacobs is injury-prone, but it’s safe to project that he’ll hit the double-digit touchdown mark this season after hobbling into the end zone six times in 2009.

Legedu Naanee, WR, Chargers
Legedu Naanee is listed as the starting receiver across from Malcom Floyd on San Diego’s depth chart. This was pretty much common knowledge, but it’s official now. Naanee will likely start at least the first six games of the season. He’s a late-round fantasy prospect with a ton of upside.

Pierre Thomas, RB, Saints
According to Adam Schefter, Lynell Hamilton suffered a torn ACL on Wednesday morning. This sucks for Hamilton, but it’s great news for Pierre Thomas’ fantasy season. Sean Payton looked like he was going to experiment with Hamilton at the goal line. With Hamilton gone, it’s one less mediocre running back that Payton will be able to mess around with.

AUG. 11

Donald Brown, RB, Colts
Peyton Manning told the media Tuesday that he expects Donald Brown to be a big contributor this season. Brown was recently featured in my 2010 Fantasy Football Buy Low article.

Percy Harvin, WR, Vikings
Brad Childress informed the media Tuesday that Percy Harvin is once again dealing with migraines, and doesn’t know when Harvin will return to practice. Expect Harvin to miss a couple of games this year.

Ben Tate, RB, Texans
Gary Kubiak told reporters that Ben Tate’s play in training camp is “up and down.” Tate missed time in minicamps and consequently might be on the bench when the season kicks off. He has the talent to take over a few weeks in – but Arian Foster could just as easily keep him on the sidelines.

Mike Thomas, WR, Jaguars
Mike Thomas has reportedly looked great in training camp this season and has solidified his status as a starting receiver across from Mike Sims-Walker. Thomas is worth drafting as a sleeper in the final rounds of deeper leagues.

AUG. 10

Deon Butler, WR, Seahawks
Per multiple reports, Deon Butler has been the star receiver in Seattle’s training camp. Butler was awesome at Penn State, frequently outplaying the overrated Derrick Williams, so this comes as no surprise. Unfortunately, the Seahawks’ shaky quarterback situation limits Butler’s upside.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
When the Chiefs gave Thomas Jones the first-team carries ahead of Jamaal Charles at the beginning of training camp, I thought it was cute. However, Jones is still listed ahead of Charles on the depth chart. Charles is a very talented runner, so he might just be too skilled for Todd Haley’s offense. In all seriousness, if Haley doesn’t give Charles the touches he deserves, he should be fired on the spot. Of course, I wrote this after Week 7 last year, but Kansas City ownership didn’t listen.

Matt Leinart, QB, Cardinals
Matt Leinart predictably struggled during Arizona’s scrimmage on Saturday. Awesome Kelly in Arizona, meanwhile, reports that Derek Anderson has outplayed Leinart in training camp, but also cites that neither looked very good.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Steelers
It was once speculated that the Steelers would let someone other than Rashard Mendenhall handle the goal-line carries, but no one has stepped up; Jonathan Dwyer has predictably looked awful in camp.

Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos
Knowshon Moreno isn’t expected to play this preseason. He should be ready for kickoff weekend, but this is still bad news. The thing is, many people are starting to take notice of this as Moreno’s ADP is falling. I was just able to obtain him in the fifth round of an experts league, so you might be able to get him at a great value as well.

Devin Thomas, WR, Redskins
Per Washington’s most recent depth chart, Devin Thomas is a third-stringer, listed behind Joey Galloway and Roydell Williams as a split end. It’s pretty alarming that Thomas hasn’t been able to move past a decrepit veteran and a journeyman by now.

AUG. 9

David Buehler, K, Cowboys
If you didn’t watch the Bengals-Cowboys game, you may have looked at David Buehler’s 3-of-4 field goals and said, “That looks fine.” It wasn’t. Buehler’s longest successful kick was from 34 yards, which barely sneaked through the upright. Buehler’s missed field goal from 49 was embarrassingly wide left. I can no longer recommend drafting this guy despite all the opportunities he’ll receive.

Chad Ochocinco, WR, Bengals
Chad Ochocinco didn’t do much against the Cowboys; he didn’t catch a single pass and was targeted once. He looked like a clear-cut “Robin” to Terrell Owens’ “Batman.” Perhaps Ochocinco should have spent more time working out and less time on his $10 reality TV shows this offseason.

Terrell Owens, WR, Bengals
While Carson Palmer struggled, Terrell Owens looked pretty good; he caught two passes for 18 yards. Owens was targeted a whopping five times, and looked like he truly was the “Batman” of the receiving corps.

Carson Palmer, QB, Bengals
Carson Palmer did not look good against the Cowboys. He was just 2-of-5 for 18 yards, and was sacked twice. He looked like the same guy who struggled in 2009 – a quarterback with minimal arm strength.

Jason Witten, TE, Cowboys
What happened to using Jason Witten on the goal line? Though Cowboys coaches promised to use Witten more in the red zone, Witten ran only one route on goal-to-go at the 1-yard line against the Bengals. On that play, Romo felt the pressure and had to dump it off to Felix Jones. Instead of Witten getting the end-zone targets, Roy Williams undeservedly saw two tosses go his way. I want to see what happens in Dallas’ next two preseason games, but it’s not looking good right now.
