2010 Fantasy Football Rankings: Top 21-30

There will be many more 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings and features in the late spring and summer, including tons of 2010 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts, Player Rankings, Sleepers and Busts. I’ll also have an extensive 2010 NFL Fantasy Football Preseason Stock Report.

2010 Fantasy Football Rankings – Top 21-30 (May 21):

  1. Peyton Manning, QB, Colts
Peyton Manning is still at the top of his game and his receiving corps is better than ever. The only concern here is whether or not he’ll play the entire game come Week 16. He and Bill Polian really screwed over thousands of fantasy owners last season.

  2. Randy Moss, WR, Patriots
Randy Moss failed to eclipse 75 yards in any game following Week 10 last season. You can attribute that to his separated shoulder and Tom Brady’s broken finger, which the big media humorously neglected to report until right before that game despite the fact that the Vegas line dropped around four points against the Patriots. At any rate, there’s some concern with Moss turning 33 in February, but he should still be a near-elite NFL receiver for at least one more year.

  3. Ben Tate, RB, Texans
Michael Lombardi predicts that Ben Tate will win Offensive Rookie of the Year and rush for 1,500 yards in 2010. I think that could happen; with Steve Slaton coming off injury, Tate doesn’t have to share carries with anyone. The Auburn product is a perfect fit in Houston’s offense. Remember all of those instances when the Texans failed to get into the end zone from the 1-yard line? At 220 pounds, Tate will score in those scenarios.

I had Tate ranked ahead of Ryan Mathews initially, but Michigan Mike really brought up a great point on the forums. If Tate fumbles a couple of times, Gary Kubiak will pull him out of the lineup completely. We’ve seen Kubiak’s quick hook before, and it ruined things for all Steve Slaton owners last year.

  4. Pierre Thomas, RB, Saints
Despite missing three games, not having his Pro Bowl left tackle, and sharing touches with Mike Bell and Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas managed 793 rushing yards, 39 receptions, 302 receiving yards and eight total touchdowns.

The good news is that the mediocre Bell is gone, meaning Thomas only has to relinquish some of his work to Bush. Unless Sean Payton falls in love with another pedestrian running back, Thomas should be in for a big year.

  5. Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Steelers
Rashard Mendenhall is being overdrafted. He’s going in the first round of many fantasy mocks, and he’s even listed as high as No. 10 in Matthew Berry’s pre-NFL Draft top 100.

In the wake of Ben Roethlisberger’s sexual assault charge and subsequent 6-game suspension, I’m down on all Steelers this year. Opposing defenses will stack the line of scrimmage for those six games. After that, it’s reasonable to expect that Roethlisberger won’t be anywhere near 100 percent both mentally and physically. If so, Pittsburgh’s offense will struggle and there will be less goal-line opportunities for Mendenhall.

Also, don’t discount the impact that rookie Jonathan Dwyer will have on this team. Dwyer is a talented runner and could take away some goal-line carries from Mendenhall, who hasn’t exactly thrived in this area.

  6. Brandon Marshall, WR, Dolphins
Brandon Marshall caught 101 passes for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns with Kyle Orton. Something tells me that Marshall will be fine with Chad Henne. Marshall’s reception total will likely drop in Miami’s offense, but his yards per catch will rise because unlike Orton, Henne doesn’t have the arm strength of a 12-year-old girl. In fact, Henne’s actually a fantasy sleeper of mine because quarterbacks with new receivers thrive in fantasy football.

  7. Roddy White, WR, Falcons
Roddy White never had scored more than seven touchdowns in a season before 2009, when he reached the end zone 11 times to go along with his 1,153 yards. An aberration? I don’t think so – it was more of a product of Atlanta’s offense reaching its near-100 percent potential with Matt Ryan entering his second year. The Falcons could be even more efficient on the offensive side of the ball in 2010.

  8. Matt Schaub, QB, Texans
Do you know how many times Matt Schaub was limited to less than 260 passing yards last year? Three. That’s it. Schaub finished the season with 4,770 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. I don’t see any reason for a decline.

  9. Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Cardinals
Mark my words, Larry Fitzgerald will be overdrafted in your league.

Matt Leinart isn’t very good. At least he wasn’t when he started in 2006 and 2007. Leinart checked down far too often and seldom went deep. He just doesn’t have the arm or deep accuracy that Kurt Warner possessed.

In 2006, Fitzgerald had just 68 catches, 941 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games with Leinart as his starting quarterback. The following year, Leinart started five games, but rotated in and out of three with Warner.

I tracked every single reception Fitzgerald caught in 2007 thanks to NFL.com’s Gamecenter. Here is how he fared with each quarterback (it adds up to 15 games because Fitzgerald missed one week):

With Leinart throwing Fitzgerald the ball (3.5 games): 15 catches, 212 yards. 0 TDs.
With Warner throwing Fitzgerald the ball (11.5 games): 85 catches, 1,197 yards. 10 TDs.

So don’t believe any misleading articles suggesting Fitzgerald won’t fall off. He will.

I think we can expect around 1,000-1,100 yards and 6-8 touchdowns. Not bad, but it’s not what we’ve come to expect from Fitzgerald.

  10. Marques Colston, WR, Saints
Drew Brees has so many weapons that Marques Colston is a very inconsistent fantasy producer. He did finish with 70 catches for 1,074 yards and nine touchdowns last year, but he caught three or fewer passes on a whopping six occasions.
