Updated 5/26

  • Jason Campbell, QB, Raiders. Bye: 10.
Jason Campbell just compiled 3,618 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions on a miserable team behind a horrific offensive line. It’s hard to believe, but the Raiders are better up front and have more talented weapons (Michael Bush, Darren McFadden, Zach Miller, Chaz Schilens, Louis Murphy) than the Redskins do. Campbell should be a solid QB2 this season.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 3,500 passing yards. 19 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 200 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 218.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (QB Friendly): 291.

  • Michael Bush, RB, Raiders. Bye: 10.
MAY 20 UPDATE: Good news – Michael Bush took most of the first-team reps in OTAs. We’re still not out of the woods yet with Darren McFadden, but it’s looking a lot safer to draft Bush.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: If it were announced that Michael Bush would be the every-down running back for the Raiders this season, he might be in my top 25 overall. Bush is very talented and somehow mustered 4.8 yards per carry last year (589 rush yards, 17 receptions, 107 receiving yards, 3 TDs) despite playing with a horrific offensive line and no quarterback. The Raiders have upgraded both areas this offseason, meaning their ground attack will be more effective going forward.

The problem? Darren McFadden. The Raiders are so financially invested in McFadden that they’ll probably give him the opportunity before Bush. McFadden isn’t very good though, and it’s only a matter of time before Oakland realizes that he’s nothing more than a third-down back. Once Bush starts receiving 20-plus carries per contest, he’ll be a legitimate RB2. When/if that time comes is anyone’s guess, however.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 1,080 rushing yards. 18 catches. 125 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 168.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 186.

  • Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders. Bye: 10.
Darren McFadden is injury-prone and goes down on first contact. His 6-year, $60 million contract will probably mean that he’ll have first dibs on the every-down running back gig, but I wouldn’t count on him hanging on to it for that long. Ideally, Michael Bush would carry the ball 250-plus times and McFadden would be a solid third-down back, but that may not be the case because of the salary structure.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 500 rushing yards. 38 catches. 430 receiving yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 105.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 143.

  • Chaz Schilens, WR, Raiders. Bye: 10.
I liked Chaz Schilens as a late-round sleeper last year, but he suffered an injury in the preseason and didn’t play until Week 10. Schilens had 29 catches for 365 yards and two touchdowns in eight games. He’s coming off foot surgery, but if he’s OK, he should be able to post solid numbers. Schilens is a talented wideout and will really benefit from Oakland’s upgrade at quarterback.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 64 catches. 925 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 122.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 186.

  • Louis Murphy, WR, Raiders. Bye: 10.
It’s a shame. Excluding Chaz Schilens, Louis Murphy is the most talented receiver on Oakland’s roster, but he’ll be playing behind Darrius Heyward-Bey because he doesn’t make $40 million. I don’t doubt that Murphy will eventually take over for DHB as a starter, but it’ll take time. If you’re patient, you could have a low-end WR3 or solid WR4 on your hands by November. I’d certainly pick up Murphy in the final few rounds of really deep leagues.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 44 catches. 630 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 87.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 131.

  • Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Raiders. Bye: 10.
Like Darren McFadden, Darrius Heyward-Bey could be in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season over a more talented player (Louis Murphy). Heyward-Bey stinks, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s benched for good.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 19 catches. 260 yards. 1 total TD.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 32.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 51.

  • Zach Miller, TE, Raiders. Bye: 10.
Zach Miller has topped 775 receiving yards the past two seasons (66 catches, 805 yards in 2009), but his fantasy value has always been curbed because Oakland just wasn’t in the red zone that often. That will change with Jason Campbell at quarterback. Whether it was Chris Cooley or Fred Davis, Campbell loved feeding the ball to his tight end in Washington. I see no reason why that would change in Oakland.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 72 catches. 925 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 128.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 200.

  • Sebastian Janikowski, K, Raiders. Bye: 10.
Sebastian Janikowski has done a great job staying sober the past two years, nailing 24-of-30 kicks in 2008 and 26-of-29 in 2009. Janikowski is a combined 9-of-15 from 50-plus in that span. With an improved offense, he’ll have more field goals and extra points to attempt.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 26-31 FG (4-7 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 33 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 125.

  • Oakland Raiders. Bye: 10.
An intriguing fantasy defense. The Raiders seldom had large leads in 2009, which makes their sack total of 37 impressive. A better offense will lead to more sacks and turnovers.
