2010 Fantasy Football Rankings – Kansas City Chiefs:
Updated 5/25
Next time, don’t give a noodle-armed quarterback $63 million. Matt Cassel totaled 2,924 yards, 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2009. He held a YPA greater than 6.7 in only three contests and was limited to fewer than 190 passing yards on seven instances. Translation: Cassel is a mediocre QB2 at best in 12-man fantasy leagues.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 3,150 passing yards. 18 passing TDs. 20 INTs. 150 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 179.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (QB Friendly): 246.
A flash in the pan? Some may think so, but I don’t. Jamaal Charles is a stud. In the middle of the season, before Charles went nuts and nearly set the single-game rushing record at Denver, I wrote a thesis on why Todd Haley was an idiot for not using Jamaal Charles enough. It took him a while, but he finally listened.
Charles’ final four games, when he finally received 20 or more rushes: 94 carries, 658 rushing yards, 14 catches, 79 receiving yards, four touchdowns. Not too shabby.
Like Ray Rice, Charles won’t get the goal-line looks (Thomas Jones), but he has the talent to generate about 1,700 total yards; he had 1,417 total yards last year, and he didn’t even get 200 carries.
Two issues: First, Dexter McCluster will take some receptions away from Charles. And second, Charles is only 200 pounds, so there’s no telling if his body can hold up over a 16-game slate of 25-plus touches per contest.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 1,225 rushing yards. 46 catches. 380 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 202.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 248.
Though Thomas Jones rushed for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns last year, he didn’t really look good doing it. Jones’ numbers were vastly inflated by his incredible offensive line. Shonn Greene was a much better runner, as we all saw in the playoffs.
Jones is now 32 and has more than 2,100 career carries on his resume. He won’t have nearly as much success behind Kansas City’s pedestrian offensive front. That said, his workload will be primarily at the goal line, so he’ll score some touchdowns. He’s a decent handcuff.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 475 rushing yards. 8 catches. 45 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 94.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 102.
Dwayne Bowe is a good buy-low candidate. He had only 47 receptions, 589 yards and four touchdowns in 2009, thanks to injuries, crappy quarterbacking and horrific coaching. Todd Haley and the noodle-armed Matt Cassel are still there, but perhaps Charlie Weis’ offensive prowess will help Bowe rebound from the worst season of his career.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 76 catches. 950 yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 137.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 213.
Chris Chambers caught 45 balls for 730 yards and five touchdowns in 2009. However, he was in his contract season and recently signed a 3-year, $15 million deal with a $5.9 million guaranteed. Now 32, Chambers is due for a drop-off.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 34 catches. 450 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 69.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 103.
Dexter McCluster will play in the slot this season and could evolve into a decent flex option in PPR leagues toward the end of his rookie year. He should catch anywhere between 40 and 60 balls.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 47 catches. 560 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 68.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 115.
Tony Moeaki is a really talented tight end who was just drafted in the third round. If he can stay healthy, he could become a big part of Kansas City’s offense. But that’s exactly the problem – he was extremely injury-prone at Iowa throughout his collegiate career.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 38 catches. 450 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 63.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 101.
Last year’s Mr. Irrelevant turned out to be a pretty damn good kicker. As a rookie, Succop nailed 25-of-29 attempts, including 2-of-5 from 50-plus and 6-of-7 from 40-49. It’s a shame he doesn’t play in a better offense.
Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-30 FG (2-4 from 50+; 6-8 from 40-49). 27 XP.
Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 111.
Eric Berry will increase Kansas City’s interception total, but the team will still have major problems getting to the quarterback on a consistent basis.
