Updated 5/29

  • Matt Schaub, QB, Texans. Bye: 7.
Do you know how many times Matt Schaub was limited to less than 260 passing yards last year? Three. That’s it. Schaub finished the season with 4,770 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Barring injury, I don’t see any reason for a decline.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 4,650 passing yards. 28 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 40 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 282.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (QB Friendly): 384.

  • Ben Tate, RB, Texans. Bye: 7.
Michael Lombardi predicts that Ben Tate will win Offensive Rookie of the Year and rush for 1,500 yards in 2010. I think that could happen; with Steve Slaton coming off injury, Tate doesn’t have to share carries with anyone. The Auburn product is a perfect fit in Houston’s offense. Remember all of those instances when the Texans failed to get into the end zone from the 1-yard line? At 220 pounds, Tate will score in those scenarios.

One issue: If Tate fumbles a couple of times, Gary Kubiak will pull him out of the lineup completely. We’ve seen Kubiak’s quick hook before, and it ruined things for all Steve Slaton owners last year.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 1,130 rushing yards. 17 catches. 140 receiving yards. 11 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 193.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 210.

  • Steve Slaton, RB, Texans. Bye: 7.
Steve Slaton was a huge bust last year. His fumbling issues got him benched, and a neck injury caused him to miss the final month of the regular season. Slaton had neck surgery this offseason, and projects as nothing more than a third-down back going forward.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 575 rushing yards. 40 catches. 360 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 163.

  • Andre Johnson, WR, Texans. Bye: 7.
The only receiver in my top 10 overall, Andre Johnson is unquestionably the No. 1 player at his position in the wake of Kurt Warner’s retirement (and Larry Fitzgerald’s subsequent regression).

In the past two years, Johnson has an amazing 3,144 yards and 17 touchdowns. The only time he generated fewer than 60 yards last year was against Darrelle Revis.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 105 catches. 1,550 yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 209.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 314.

  • Jacoby Jones, WR, Texans. Bye: 7.
The Texans drafted Trindon Holliday because they want Jacoby Jones to focus on his receiving duties. With a 6-2, 210-pound frame, Jones figures to be a solid red-zone threat at the very least (he scored six touchdowns last year). Take a shot on him in the final few rounds of your fantasy draft.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 49 catches. 730 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 115.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 164.

  • Kevin Walter, WR, Texans. Bye: 7.
The Texans re-signed Kevin Walter, but they’re really hoping that Jacoby Jones breaks through and becomes a reliable No. 2 receiver. Walter, meanwhile, will likely be used in the slot, so his reception total should still be high.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 57 catches. 690 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 81.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 138.

  • Owen Daniels, TE, Texans. Bye: 7.
Major risk-reward situation. In seven games last year, Owen Daniels caught 39 balls for 497 yards and five touchdowns, which means he was on pace for 89 receptions, 1,136 yards and 11 scores. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in early November. All early reports are positive that Daniels will be ready for the season opener. If he were completely healthy, he would obviously be projected to accumulate much better stats, but he’s definitely worth a mid-round flier.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 725 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 108.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 168.

  • Neil Rackers, K, Texans. Bye: 7.
Kris Brown repeatedly choked in the clutch, cost the Texans a pair of victories last year and nailed just 70 percent of his field goals, so Houston went out and signed Neil Rackers, who was 16-of-17 in 2009.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-30 FG (2-4 from 50+; 8-10 from 40-49). 41 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 127.

  • Houston Texans. Bye: 7.
Not the worst fantasy defense out there, but not a particularly effective one either. Mario Williams will have double-digit sacks, and Connor Barwin should come on during his second season as a pass-rush specialist. Meanwhile, Trindon Holliday is capable of taking a punt or a kickoff back to the house.
