Updated 5/27

  • Matt Moore, QB, Panthers. Bye: 6.
Jimmy Clausen is the better quarterback, but it’s not like Matt Moore is some scrub. In five starts, one of which was without Steve Smith, Moore totaled 990 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. If Moore continues where he left off, his 2009 stats project into 3,312 yards, 32 touchdowns and four picks over a 16-game slate in 2010.

Of course I don’t expect Moore to eclipse the 30-touchdown barrier, but this could be some sort of a Drew Brees-Philip Rivers situation if Moore keeps playing well. John Fox hates playing rookies, so as long as Moore doesn’t royally screw up, the job will be his. As it stands now, he’s a solid QB2.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 3,350 passing yards. 18 passing TDs. 9 INTs. 0 rushing yards. 0 rushing TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 188.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (QB Friendly): 257.

  • Jimmy Clausen, QB, Panthers. Bye: 6.
Jimmy Clausen is pro-ready and knows 90 percent of Carolina’s playbook, word-for-word. If he starts, he’ll be a decent high-end QB2 as a rookie. My projection for him would be about 3,550 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 picks.

Unfortunately, John Fox really hates playing rookies. I think the only way Matt Moore will be benched this year is if his son is kidnapped and he has to start losing games on purpose, just like Jake Delhomme.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 0 passing yards. 0 passing TDs. 0 INTs. 0 rushing yards. 0 rushing TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 0.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (QB Friendly): 0.

  • Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers. Bye: 6.
This is a really tough call. Both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are exceptional running backs. Both rushed for more than 1,100 yards in 2009 despite splitting carries. Both should be second-round fantasy picks.

I have Stewart over Williams by a hair. Stewart’s the better goal-line back, and while Williams is the superior pass-catcher, I’ll take 3-4 more touchdowns over 15-20 more receptions any day in non-PPR leagues. The Panthers also have more invested in Stewart, and based on his amazing finish last year (206 rushing yards against the Giants) he could command more rushing attempts than Williams this season.

Here’s the verdict until further notice: Stewart over Williams in non-PPR leagues. Williams over Stewart in PPR formats.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 1,110 rushing yards. 16 catches. 125 receiving yards. 14 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 207.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 223.

  • DeAngelo Williams, RB, Panthers. Bye: 6.
Like I said, Jonathan Stewart over DeAngelo Williams by a hair in non-PPR leagues. Both runners are capable of 1,100-plus yards and about 10 touchdowns this season as long as the offensive line stays healthy.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 1,150 rushing yards. 33 catches. 275 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 202.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 235.

  • Steve Smith, WR, Panthers. Bye: 6.
Jake Delhomme did a great job ruining Steve Smith’s 2009 campaign. Smith, who had 1,421 yards and six touchdowns the year before, saw his stats drop to 982 yards and seven scores.

There is some good news though. Delhomme is gone, and will be replaced by either Matt Moore or Jimmy Clausen. In four full games with Moore last year, Smith caught 19 balls for 378 yards and three touchdowns. Extend those figures over 16 games, and you get 76 receptions, 1,512 yards and 12 scores. Not bad.

If Clausen wins the job, that’s fine too. Roddy White did pretty well during Matt Ryan’s rookie year in 2008 (88, 1,382, 7 TDs).

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 87 catches. 1,300 yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 178.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 265.

  • Dwayne Jarrett, WR, Panthers. Bye: 6.
John Fox loves his veterans, so I expect Dwayne Jarrett to start over Brandon LaFell. Jarrett caught five balls for 68 yards and a touchdown from Matt Moore in the 2009 season finale, so maybe those two have developed some sort of rapport.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 51 catches. 600 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 78.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 129.

  • Dante Roasario, TE, Panthers. Bye: 6.
The Panthers just don’t like to use tight ends in their offense.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 33 catches. 400 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 52.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 85.

  • John Kasay, K, Panthers. Bye: 6.
John Kasay turns 41 in October, and he’s 2-of-7 from 50-plus the past two years. Look elsewhere.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 23-29 FG (1-3 from 50+; 6-9 from 40-49). 40 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 116.

  • Carolina Panthers. Bye: 8.
The Panthers had just 31 sacks last year, and that was with Julius Peppers. Unless Everette Brown can step up, Carolina’s defense won’t produce many fantasy points for you.
