2011 Fantasy Football Offseason Stock – Week of July 25

JULY 31

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Sunday morning to take these stocks into account.

Joseph Addai, RB, Colts
Joseph Addai re-signed with the Colts. He’d be injury-prone wherever he went, but his fantasy potential is obviously highest on Indianapolis because of the touchdown possibilities.

Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys
Give credit to forum mod Injured Reserve for pointing this out – Dez Bryant essentially has two lost games this year now that Nnamdi Asomugha is on the Eagles. Since Bryant primarily lines up on the left side, he’s one of the victims of Philadelphia’s blockbuster free-agency signing.

Mark Clayton, WR, Rams
You can probably count Mark Clayton out of the Sam Bradford No. 1 target sweepstakes. Clayton is still a free agent because, as Steve Spagnuolo said, Clayton’s knee is “not ready yet.” Bradford will turn one of his wideouts into a fantasy stud. With Clayton nursing his knee, that could be Danario Alexander, Donnie Avery or Mike Sims-Walker. Stay tuned.

Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions
Calvin Johnson has reportedly put on five pounds of muscle to generate more power and explosion. It’s great to see that Megatron has such a great work ethic. It’s almost scary to think what he’ll be able to produce if Matthew Stafford manages to stay in the lineup.

Brandon Lloyd, WR, Broncos
While Dez Bryant and Hakeem Nicks are hurt by Nnamdi Asomugha’s arrival in Philadelphia, Brandon Lloyd benefits. Lloyd, who usually lines up on the left side, won’t have to deal with Asomugha twice a season now. That should help offset the Josh McDaniels firing.

Hakeem Nicks, WR, Giants
Hakeem Nicks almost exclusively lines up on the left side, so he’ll be matched up against Nnamdi Asomugha twice in 2011 and beyond. These are essentially two lost games. Don’t avoid Nicks because of this; just bump him down a couple of spots on your 2011 Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet.

JULY 30

Steven Jackson, RB, Rams
The Rams signed guard Harvey Dahl, one of the top offensive linemen available on the market. Steven Jackson’s run blocking just got better.

Willis McGahee, RB, Broncos
Willis McGahee was brought in to be Knowshon Moreno’s backup, but I’m not sure that’ll be the case by the end of the year. Moreno is injury-prone and lazy, while McGahee should still have plenty left in the tank because he hasn’t carried the ball much in the past few seasons.

Darren Sproles, RB, Saints
Darren Sproles will assume Reggie Bush’s role in New Orleans’ explosive offense. He could be a possible PPR flex option, but he’ll share receptions with Pierre Thomas behind Mark Ingram.

Roy Williams, WR, Bears
Roy Williams was a huge disappointment in Dallas, but there’s a chance he could revitalize his career with the Bears. Williams had his best season under Mike Martz in Detroit, and he’ll likely be Jay Cutler’s preferred target in the red zone.

JULY 29

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Friday morning to take these stocks into account.

Deion Branch, WR, Patriots
Deion Branch could still be a favorite target of Tom Brady’s, but it’s reasonable to expect him to lose some receptions in the wake of the Chad Ochocinco trade.

Reggie Bush, RB, Dolphins
The Dolphins have promised Reggie Bush that he and Daniel Thomas will be the only running backs touching the football in Miami. Bush is now a really good PPR option. He’s still a major injury risk, but he’ll rack up tons of catches when he’s in the lineup.

Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers
Michael Crabtree is out 4-6 weeks with a foot injury. This is yet another reason to hate him this year, but it’ll undoubtedly cause his ADP to drop to the point where he might be a nice value.

Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Cardinals
Even if you don’t like Kevin Kolb, you have to acknowledge that he’s light years ahead of John Skelton, Max Hall and Derek Anderson. Kolb and Larry Fitzgerald have worked out numerous times this offseason, so Fitzgerald is bound to have a bounce-back season.

Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos
The Broncos wanted to bring in DeAngelo Williams, but they just didn’t have the funds to do so. Knowshon Moreno will be the primary ball-carrier in Denver again, but the same issues remain: Moreno is injury-prone and lazy. He’s also a non-factor at the goal line with Tim Tebow projected to get most of the carries near the end zone.

DeMarco Murray, RB, Cowboys
DeMarco Murray suffered a hamstring injury in training camp, and will miss a couple of weeks. Hamstrings tend to linger, but the more important factor is that Murray, a rookie, cannot afford to miss any time in training camp during this shortened offseason if he wants to have any playing time.

Chad Ochocinco, WR, Patriots
I still think Chad Ochocinco is done, but he’ll have the chance to be a fantasy factor with Tom Brady in New England. Nothing would surprise me here. If Ochocinco has a breakout year, I’ll be just as surprised if he does nothing and gets cut. I can’t wait to see how he looks during the preseason.

Greg Olsen, TE, Panthers
Greg Olsen has to be thrilled – no longer does he have to rot in Chicago’s tight end-unfriendly offense. Instead, he gets to play for offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who is renowned for producing great fantasy tight ends. He’s worked with Antonio Gates, and he was Cleveland’s coordinator when Kellen Winslow Jr. had his best year.

Andre Roberts, WR, Cardinals
Things couldn’t get better for Andre Roberts this week. With Steve Breaston gone and Kevin Kolb under center, Roberts is a legitimate late-round fantasy sleeper. Roberts finished the 2010 campaign on a strong note, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he parlays that into a breakout sophomore campaign.

Daniel Thomas, RB, Dolphins
I wasn’t a fan of Daniel Thomas’ situation a week ago, but with a fragile Reggie Bush as the only competition in town, Thomas will be getting most of the rush attempts in Miami. Just don’t get carried away – even with Kyle Orton, there won’t be many goal-line attempts.

Pierre Thomas, RB, Saints
The Saints have brought in Darren Sproles, so Pierre Thomas’ touches will drop in 2011. He’s no longer draftable.

Chris Wells, RB, Cardinals
Two things ruined Chris Wells’ 2010 campaign: a nagging knee injury and horrific quarterback play. Wells is now healthy, while Kevin Kolb offers a huge upgrade over Derek Anderson, Max Hall and John Skelton. Wells is poised for a bounce-back 2011 season.

JULY 28

Kenny Britt, WR, Titans
Matt Hasselbeck signed with the Titans, so Kenny Britt won’t have to catch passes from a raw rookie quarterback in 2011. Hasselbeck is a much better passer than Vince Young and Kerry Collins (last year’s version), so Britt could have the best season of his career – assuming he doesn’t get arrested again.

Jermaine Gresham, TE, Bengals
I didn’t like Jermaine Gresham much prior to the Bruce Gradkowski signing, but having a veteran presence at quarterback will help. The Polish Point-Shaver has a weak arm, so he’ll be utilizing Gresham early and often – just as he did with Zach Miller in Oakland.

Percy Harvin, WR, Vikings
Donovan McNabb is done, but he’s still a current upgrade over Christian Ponder. Santana Moss compiled 1,100 yards with McNabb at the helm in Washington last year, so I don’t see why Percy Harvin can’t do the same, especially now that he’ll be featured more in the wake of Sidney Rice’s departure.

Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Seahawks
Tarvaris Jackson should be able to overtake Charlie Whitehurst as the starting quarterback in Seattle. Not that it means anything. Jackson is a non-factor in fantasy football.

Chris Johnson, RB, Titans
Chris Johnson is another player to benefit from the Matt Hasselbeck signing. With Hasselbeck at the helm, Tennessee’s offense will produce more touchdowns. Of course, Johnson will score some of those.

Donovan McNabb, QB, Vikings
I wouldn’t draft Donovan McNabb in a 12-team league, but his situation in Minnesota is much more favorable than it was in Washington.

Adrian Peterson, RB, Vikings
I was slightly down on Adrian Peterson because of his quarterbacking situation. Donovan McNabb isn’t very good, but he’s a current upgrade over Christian Ponder, so I’m a bit higher on Peterson now.

Sidney Rice, WR, Seahawks
Sidney Rice is a one-year wonder chasing money with absolutely no quarterback to work with in Seattle. I don’t know what he was thinking when he signed with the Seahawks. He’s not a starting-caliber fantasy player right now.

Visanthe Shiancoe, TE, Vikings
Donovan McNabb likes utilizing tight ends, so Visanthe Shiancoe could benefit. The lockout length helps Shiancoe too; Kyle Rudolph won’t be much of a factor early on.

Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers
Thanks, Panthers. As if the running back pool wasn’t shallow enough, they just had to re-sign DeAngelo Williams. Jonathan Stewart will continue to rot on Carolina’s bench until unless Williams gets injured.

JULY 27

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Thursday morning to take these stocks into account.

Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys
Anyone who owned Dez Bryant in a fantasy league last year knows how much of a headache Roy Williams was. Despite Williams’ lethargy, the former Longhorn saw too many snaps in favor of Bryant. Well, Williams is gone, so Bryant is definitely Tony Romo’s No. 2 receiver going forward.

Peyton Manning, QB, Colts
Thanks to the lockout, Peyton Manning’s lingering neck injury will keep him from participating in the early days of training camp. It’s unclear when Manning will be healthy. I don’t expect him to miss any games, but he could struggle in the first month or so of the season, much like he did in 2008.

Mario Manningham, WR, Giants
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Steve Smith will open the season on the PUP list. Mario Manningham, who finished the 2010 season strong, will continue to serve as Eli Manning’s No. 2 receiver.

Ray Rice, RB, Ravens
Ray Rice owners, rejoice. Willis McGahee, the dreaded “Touchdown Vulture,” has been released. Le’Ron McClain figures to get some of the touches down at the goal line, but Rice’s touchdown total is sure to rise.

Steve Smith, WR, Giants
As mentioned earlier, Steve Smith will reportedly start the season on the PUP list. He’s nothing more than a late-round flier.
