2011 Fantasy Football Auction: PPR Auction Mock

July 14, 2011.

This is a 2011 Fantasy Football Auction Mock conducted with some of the guys on the forum. We decided to hop into an ESPN mock draft. We do fantasy mock drafts every Wednesday night at 10 Eastern, so feel free to stop by the forums to join us.

Here are the results with commentary below each round.

Also, be sure to check out my other 2011 Fantasy Football articles, which will include rankings, sleepers, busts, cheat sheets and other things. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

Team WalterFootball.com

QB Eli Manning 9
RB Adrian Peterson 60
RB Felix Jones 20
RB/WR Robert Meachem 3
WR Greg Jennings 39
WR Austin Collie 20
TE Owen Daniels 10
D/ST Steelers D/ST 2
K Sebastian Janikowski 1

BE Marcedes Lewis 3
BE Mike Williams (Sea) 3
BE Rashad Jennings 6
BE Terrell Owens 1
BE Beanie Wells 3
BE Davone Bess 6
BE Sam Bradford 6

Total: 192
Remaining: 8

My Team: Before you say, “Walt, you’re on crack, your team sucks,” I must preface this write-up by stating two things. First, this is the first time I’ve done a fantasy auction mock draft in several years. And second, I’m on vacation. I’m in Ocean City, N.J. and I was out on the beach for hours today, lying in the sun, checking out hot chicks in bikinis and noticing Jerk of the Week candidates. I have no idea what’s going on right now. Hence, the Terrell Owens $1 bid.

Seriously, about Owens, I wanted to nominate Sam Bradford for a bid. But because I was so out of it, I confused Owens, an older bald black guy, with Bradford, a young white guy with brown hair. If I lived down here on a permanent basis, my entire Web site would be incomprehensible.

Best Fantasy Auction Value: I really liked Sam Bradford for $6 and Robert Meachem for $3. I actually have Bradford ranked higher than my “starting” quarterback, Eli Manning, yet he was $3 cheaper because I was able to acquire him toward the end of the auction.

That’s a key thing – as I learned with selecting Adrian Peterson early on, you should wait on players unless you’re getting a really great bargain (i.e. Tom Brady for $28).

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: Definitely Peterson. Had I waited, I could have had a more balanced and deeper team. I only have four running backs, so I’m screwed when Felix Jones gets hurt.

Team Dwinsgames

QB Peyton Manning 31
RB Jamaal Charles 55
RB Mark Ingram 11
RB/WR Anquan Boldin 8
WR Vincent Jackson 27
WR Brandon Lloyd 19
TE Tony Gonzalez 1
D/ST Jets D/ST 1
K Neil Rackers 1

BE Ben Roethlisberger 12
BE Pierre Thomas 9
BE Sidney Rice 9
BE Johnny Knox 8
BE Santana Moss 4
BE Randy Moss 2
BE Ryan Torain 2

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Even though Tom Brady was cheaper ($28), Peyton Manning is solid value at $31 considering that Philadelphia’s quarterback went for a whopping $45.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: I feel like Team Dwinsgames overpaid for several players like Anquan Boldin and Pierre Thomas. Jamaal Charles at $55 is way too much, considering that I was able to land Adrian Peterson for just $5 more.

Little Jimmy SanchO

QB Tony Romo 21
RB Steven Jackson 31
RB Ahmad Bradshaw 22
RB/WR Santonio Holmes 20
WR Jeremy Maclin 19
WR Mario Manningham 16
TE Zach Miller 7
D/ST Ravens D/ST 2
K Nate Kaeding 2

BE Shonn Greene 11
BE Mike Tolbert 5
BE Emmanuel Sanders 7
BE Brandon Jacobs 5
BE Michael Bush 4
BE Julio Jones 5
BE Rob Gronkowski 3

Total: 180
Remaining: 20

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Little Jimmy SanchO conserved his money until the very end, so he was able to obtain some solid bargains. I liked Mario Manningham for $16 and Ahmad Bradshaw for $22. His best value was Steven Jackson for $31. I have Jackson ahead of Darren McFadden, yet McFadden went for $44.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: Julio Jones at $5 is not a good deal at all, but Little Jimmy SanchO made that bid just to piss off Travis Lovett, a Falcons fan. Lovett wagered $4 on Jones late in the auction, but couldn’t beat $5 due to a lack of funds.

QB Dog Killer

QB Tim Tebow 3
RB Frank Gore 42
RB Darren McFadden 44
RB/WR Jahvid Best 22
WR Reggie Wayne 33
WR Wes Welker 23
TE Kellen Winslow 6
D/ST Giants D/ST 3
K Mason Crosby 2

BE LaDainian Tomlinson 5
BE Jason Snelling 3
BE Danny Woodhead 5
BE Danny Amendola 3
BE Danario Alexander 3
BE Mark Clayton 2
BE Aaron Hernandez 1

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: QB Dog Killer (Leelee from the forums) used nearly half of her money early on Frank Gore and Darren McFadden, so she didn’t spend much after that until the end of the auction. I feel like she made five great late-auction acquisitions: Tim Tebow ($3), Danny Woodhead ($5), Danny Amendola ($3), Danario Alexander ($3) and Mark Clayton ($2). If I had that Terrell Owens roster spot open, I would have gotten into a bidding war for Amendola. He’s a solid flex in PPR leagues.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: I bet Leelee regrets spending $86 on two injury-prone running backs. Also, I’m not a fan of Kellen Winslow Jr. for $6 when near equal tight ends were acquired for less (Heath Miller, $2; Marcedes Lewis, $3).

Team Balla

QB Drew Brees 32
RB Matt Forte 37
RB Ryan Grant 9
RB/WR Miles Austin 27
WR Calvin Johnson 40
WR Hakeem Nicks 39
TE Jermaine Gresham 1
D/ST Patriots D/ST 1
K David Akers 1

BE C.J. Spiller 7
BE Mark Sanchez 1
BE Torrey Smith 1
BE Colt McCoy 1
BE Chad Ochocinco 1
BE Jason Campbell 1
BE Saints D/ST 1

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Ryan Grant went for less ($9) than James Starks ($12). That’s pretty crazy. That was Team Balla’s second-best value to Matt Forte at $37. Forte is as safe as it gets, and he’s well worth it for $37 in a PPR league.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: I wouldn’t say Team Balla made any poor value picks, but his team is so thin because he acquired too many high-priced players. He has no depth at any position.

Also, I must note that Team Balla had the best quote of the auction. When outbid for Ryan Williams, he typed, “NOOOOOOOOOOOO RYAN WILLIAMS.” I didn’t think anyone on this planet was that passionate about Ryan Williams. Not even Ryan Williams’ parents.

Team Canada

QB Matt Ryan 15
RB Maurice Jones-Drew 45
RB Rashard Mendenhall 44
RB/WR LeGarrette Blount 32
WR Mike Williams (Bucs) 22
WR Michael Crabtree 9
TE Jermichael Finley 11
D/ST Packers D/ST 2
K Rob Bironas 1

BE Cedric Benson 6
BE Deion Branch 7
BE Mike Sims-Walker 1
BE Steve Smith 2
BE Bears D/ST 1
BE Darren Sproles 1
BE Toby Gerhart 1

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Cedric Benson for $6 and Deion Branch for $7 really stand out. I don’t like Benson very much, but he’s a reliable backup and well worth that price.

I also liked the Packers defense selection for $2. I made a similar move with the Steelers. I always preach playing matchups for defenses, but $2 is not a big deal to spend on a top-three fantasy defense.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: Nearly a quarter of Team Canada’s resources are being used on Maurice Jones-Drew, who himself said that he’s going to receive fewer touches this year because of his knee surgery.

easy pheltz

QB QB Eagles No. 7 45
RB Peyton Hillis 38
RB Daniel Thomas 16
RB/WR Mikel Leshoure 6
WR Marques Colston 22
WR Kenny Britt 12
TE Antonio Gates 24
D/ST Falcons D/ST 1
K Josh Brown 1

BE James Starks 12
BE Matt Schaub 18
BE Matt Cassel 1
BE Leonard Hankerson 1
BE David Garrard 1
BE Derrick Mason 1
BE Chris Ivory 1

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Mikel Leshoure was a decent value at $6.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: I don’t know where to start. Philadelphia’s quarterback was way more expensive than Tom Brady ($28) and Peyton Manning ($31). Even if you like him over Brady and Manning, you still have to acknowledge that he was a poor value.

Daniel Thomas may or may not be the starting running back in Miami, but he’s definitely not going to receive any catches. Yet he was $5 more expensive than Mark Ingram in this auction.

Kenny Britt for $12 was too much considering he could be suspended. And as mentioned before, James Starks was more expensive than Ryan Grant.

Team Vikingfan173

QB Joe Flacco 8
RB Michael Turner 28
RB Knowshon Moreno 12
RB/WR BenJarvus Green-Ellis 10
WR Larry Fitzgerald 34
WR Steve Johnson 23
TE Jimmy Graham 10
D/ST Vikings D/ST 1
K Phil Dawson 1

BE DeAngelo Williams 24
BE Dwayne Bowe 21
BE Joseph Addai 8
BE Brandon Pettigrew 5
BE Steve Smith 2
BE A.J. Green 4
BE Matthew Stafford 9

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Considering Calvin Johnson and Hakeem Nicks went for $40 and $39, respectively, I’d say Larry Fitzgerald was good value at $34. I also liked Jimmy Graham for $10.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: Who the hell knows what’s going to happen with Knowshon Moreno and BenJarvus Green-Ellis this year? I thought Vikingfan173 overbid for both of them.

Body Burner

QB Josh Freeman 17
RB Ray Rice 66
RB Jonathan Stewart 25
RB/WR Ryan Mathews 25
WR DeSean Jackson 22
WR Percy Harvin 17
TE Chris Cooley 5
D/ST Eagles D/ST 1
K Stephen Gostkowski 1

BE Jordy Nelson 11
BE Roy Helu 2
BE Thomas Jones 3
BE Kevin Kolb 2
BE Jacoby Ford 1
BE Anthony Armstrong 1
BE Hines Ward 1

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Josh Freeman ($17) and Jordy Nelson ($11) were both great values for Body Burner. Even better was Jacoby Ford, who was a steal at $1.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: There’s nothing I hate here, though I suppose since DeSean Jackson and Percy Harvin aren’t big PPR guys, they might have been a bit too expensive for my taste.

Team turd nuggets

QB Tom Brady 28
RB Arian Foster 68
RB Marshawn Lynch 13
RB/WR Montario Hardesty 5
WR Mike Wallace 27
WR Dez Bryant 25
TE Vernon Davis 11
D/ST Chargers D/ST 1
K Garrett Hartley 1

BE Braylon Edwards 5
BE Malcom Floyd 4
BE Mike Thomas 3
BE Jay Cutler 3
BE Heath Miller 2
BE Ben Tate 1
BE Kendall Hunter 3

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: I already discussed this before. Tom Brady at $28? Had I just not overspent on Adrian Peterson and Greg Jennings, I would have been all over that. When you’re doing your fantasy auction, be patient and stay on the lookout for bargains like these.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: Team Turd Nuggets has a great roster. The only thing I could point out is Mike Wallace. He doesn’t catch many passes, so he’s not someone you really want for $27 in a PPR league.

Dolphins Homer

QB Aaron Rodgers 40
RB Chris Johnson 58
RB LeSean McCoy 58
RB/WR Lance Moore 3
WR Pierre Garcon 11
WR James Jones 1
TE Jason Witten 17
D/ST 49ers D/ST 1
K Dan Carpenter 1

BE Reggie Bush 3
BE Arrelious Benn 1
BE Dexter McCluster 1
BE Jerricho Cotchery 2
BE Eric Decker 1
BE Taylor Price 1
BE Tashard Choice 1

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Considering Ray Rice went for $66, I’d say Dolphins Homer got a steal with Chris Johnson and LeSean McCoy for $58 each.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: Unfortunately for Dolphins Homer, the Johnson, McCoy and Aaron Rodgers selections made him extremely thin. Had he spent $17 on a Josh Freeman or Matt Ryan, he could have constructed a better receiving corps.

Travis Lovett

QB Philip Rivers 21
RB Fred Jackson 15
RB Ryan Williams 7
RB/WR Brandon Marshall 30
WR Roddy White 44
WR Andre Johnson 52
TE Dallas Clark 19
D/ST Lions D/ST 1
K Alex Henery 1

BE DeMarco Murray 3
BE Cadillac Williams 1
BE Mike Goodson 2
BE Jerome Simpson 1
BE Ronnie Brown 1
BE Delone Carter 1
BE Greg Little 1

Total: 200
Remaining: 0

Best Fantasy Auction Value: Look at that wideout corps – Roddy White, Andre Johnson and Brandon Marshall. That’s a killer PPR receiving trio. The best value of the bunch is obviously Brandon Marshall, who is always a threat to catch 100 passes.

Worst Fantasy Auction Value: Travis’ running backs stink, unfortunately. He probably should have waited before spending $7 on Ryan Williams. Perhaps Travis was also distracted by all the hot bikini-clad chicks when the bidding for Williams was going on. If so, I can understand.
