2013 Fantasy Football Rankings - Quarterbacks (Sept. 1):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-35

  1. Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys. Bye: 11.
Tony Romo wasn’t very effective at the beginning of the 2012 season, but his play improved substantially in the second half, excluding his usual final-game meltdown, of course. From Weeks 9 to 16, Romo tallied 17 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He also threw for 300-plus yards six times in that span – including 400-plus yards on two occasions. The difference was the emergence of Dez Bryant; the young receiver finally seemed to get it.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 4,700 passing yards. 31 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 50 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 297.

  2. Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons. Bye: 6.
Matt Ryan had never eclipsed 4,200 yards or 30 touchdowns prior to this past season, but thanks to Julio Jones’ presence, he posted career numbers: 4,719 yards and 32 scores. With Jones gaining even more experience, Ryan has never enjoyed a better supporting cast.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 4,600 passing yards. 30 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 100 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 294.

  3. Eli Manning, QB, Giants. Bye: 9.
JULY 24 UPDATE: Hakeem Nicks didn’t look healthy in training camp, according to the New York Daily News. Eli Manning attributed his late-season struggles to Nicks’ maladies, so this obviously doesn’t bode well for his fantasy outlook.

I still haven’t heard a reasonable explanation for what happened to Eli Manning down the stretch. Remember that crazy, last-minute touchdown to Victor Cruz against the Redskins? Since that time, Manning threw for 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions until Week 17. He should be able to rebound, but this extremely long funk is a bit worrisome.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 4,300 passing yards. 28 passing TDs. 16 INTs. 30 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 261.

  4. Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Despite missing three-and-a-half games in 2012, Ben Roethlisberger managed to throw for 3,265 yards and 26 touchdowns. His numbers will undoubtedly take a hit with Mike Wallace leaving for Miami, but Big Ben should still be one of the better QB2s.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 3,900 passing yards. 26 passing TDs. 11 INTs. 120 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 256.

  5. Joe Flacco, QB, Ravens. Bye: 8.
Joe Flacco has never developed into the fantasy stud that everyone expected him to become. He did accomplish more important things – like winning the Super Bowl and being the MVP of that game – but he’s just a high-end fantasy QB2. He’s inconsistent and lost Anquan Boldin in a trade to San Francisco.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 3,980 passing yards. 27 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 60 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 255.

  6. Jay Cutler, QB, Bears. Bye: 8.
JULY 25 UPDATE: Jay Cutler isn’t a starting-caliber fantasy quarterback, but he’s one of the better QB2s. Both Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery reported to training camp in great shape, so Cutler should have a great season.

Jay Cutler is just a QB2. He’s missed at least one game in each of the past three seasons. He also threw fewer than two touchdowns in five of his six final contests last year. He’ll have a monster outing from time to time, but you can’t depend on that.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 3,780 passing yards. 23 passing TDs. 15 INTs. 220 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 247.

  7. Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers. Bye: 8.
AUG. 9 UPDATE: Philip Rivers had a miserable 2012 campaign, but if his performance against the Seahawks is any indication – and it must be noted that it’s a small sample size – then he has a chance of rebounding this season. Rivers played just one series, but was extremely sharp, going 5-of-6 for 45 yards. His sole incompletion was thrown away. It’s also worth noting that Rivers didn’t have Danny Woodhead at his disposal, so he was missing his top receiving option coming out of the backfield.

What the hell happened to Philip Rivers? Is he done? His 3,606 yards last year was a career low since 2007. You could blame his atrocious offensive line for its poor blocking, but that unit hasn’t improved at all. Rivers is just a QB2 until he proves himself again.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 4,140 passing yards. 27 passing TDs. 16 INTs. 40 rushing yards. 0 rushing TDs.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 245.

  8. Andy Dalton, QB, Bengals. Bye: 12.
Andy Dalton posted very solid QB2 numbers last year – 3,669 yards, 27 touchdowns, 16 interceptions – and those numbers could improve with the additions of Tyler Eifert and Giovani Bernard (as a receiver out of the backfield) through the 2013 NFL Draft.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 3,700 passing yards. 25 passing TDs. 15 INTs. 120 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 242.

  9. Ryan Tannehill, QB, Dolphins. Bye: 6.
AUG. 5 UPDATE: Ryan Tannehill attempted just five passes against Dallas. He completed two of them for 11 yards. It was a discouraging performance for Tannehill, but that has nothing to do with what he personally did on the field; after all, Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline were both out, meaning that Tannehill’s starting wideouts were Brandon Gibson and Marvin McNutt. The problem was the pass protection. Jonathan Martin was beaten badly on numerous occasions, and he was even much better than backup Dallas Thomas, who looked like he was playing on roller skates. Thomas might turn out to be a good NFL guard, but he will get Tannehill killed if he’s the blind-side protector.

The Dolphins did everything in their power to upgrade Ryan Tannehill’s supporting cast. Mike Wallace was added as a deep threat, while Dustin Keller was brought in to be a solid, intermediate candidate. Brian Hartline was also retained. Tannehill is expected to take a step forward, and he’ll be a solid QB2 in 2013.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 3,700 passing yards. 21 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 200 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 238.

  10. Sam Bradford, QB, Rams. Bye: 11.
No one was more miserable than Sam Bradford amid the receiver musical chairs in the offseason. He watched his favorite target, Danny Amendola, sign with the Patriots. However, Bradford got great news during the NFL Draft when his team moved up for Tavon Austin. Stedman Bailey and Jared Cook were also added, making Bradford a QB2 with some upside.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 3,850 passing yards. 23 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 100 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2013 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 236.
