2010 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock – Week of June 21
JUNE 23
Devin Aromashodu, WR, Bears
This isn’t really news, but when he was asked which receiver would break out in 2009 during a radio interview, Jay Cutler replied, “Devin Aromashodu.” With Mike Martz in town, there’s plenty of optimism for the fantasy prospects of Cutler and all of his receivers, but this is a good sign for those who have Aromashodu pegged as a sleeper.
Donald Driver, WR, Packers
Donald Driver still isn’t practicing. Driver had two knee scopes back in January, and at 35, he’s not healing as quickly as he used to. Avoid him unless he really falls during your fantasy draft.
Montario Hardesty, RB, Browns
The Cleveland Plain-Dealer predicts that Montario Hardesty will be the Browns’ starting running back come Week 1. This makes sense, as Mike Holmgren and Eric Mangini spent a ton of energy making numerous downgrades to their roster this offseason. I’m not sure why neither guy likes Jerome Harrison, but the fact remains that they used a high selection on Hardesty. Barring injury or a disastrous training camp, he’ll be the guy.
Jerome Harrison, RB, Browns
The Cleveland Plain-Dealer predicts that Montario Hardesty will be the Browns’ starting running back come Week 1. Jerome Harrison is the more talented running back, so one can only wonder if Harrison rejected Eric Mangini’s birthday party invitation or accidentally flirted with Erin Andrews.
Aaron Hernandez, TE, Patriots
Aaron Hernandez is practicing ahead of Rob Gronkowski in minicamps. Hernandez is a versatile talent, but as a rookie, he’s not worth a spot on your fantasy roster; at least not right away. He’s just someone to keep an eye on.
Torry Holt, WR, Patriots
With Brandon Tate running with the first team in minicamps, Torry Holt has been practicing with the second team. If Holt can’t beat out Tate, his career is officially over. Don’t pay attention to him during your fantasy draft.
James Jones, WR, Packers
Donald Driver still isn’t practicing. Driver had two knee scopes back in January, and at 35, he’s not healing as quickly as he used to. If Driver continues to sit out, the talented James Jones will continue to impress. Jones is quickly becoming my favorite late-round sleeper; if he starts in Green Bay’s offense, he’ll post huge numbers.
Steve Smith, WR, Panthers
Steve Smith fractured his left arm playing flag football recently. Why he was playing flag football so close to training camp, and how he got hurt in a flag football game are two legitimate questions, but what matters is that Smith apparently has a 10-week recovery time. With the NFL season 12 weeks away, he should be ready for Week 1.
Still, there are slight concerns. Will Smith really be 100 percent come Sept. 12? Will he be in top football shape without being able to fully practice? And what if his recovery stalls an extra two weeks? I’m dropping Smith just a bit, but not substantially.
Brandon Tate, WR, Patriots
Second-year receiver Brandon Tate has been running with New England’s first-team offense during minicamps – ahead of Torry Holt. Tate is a really talented wideout whose career was sidetracked when he tore his ACL and MCL at North Carolina in 2008. However, based on all of the positive reports coming out of minicamp, it appears as though he has recovered. As a member of New England’s explosive offense, Tate is definitely worth a late-round flier.
