2010 Fantasy Football Rankings - Pittsburgh Steelers 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings – Pittsburgh Steelers:

Updated 6/3

  • Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Ben Roethlisberger has been suspended for 4-6 games. It may seem like a good idea to draft him as a backup so you can use him in the middle of the year or in the playoffs, but keep in mind that this whole sexual assault case probably has limited Big Ben’s time to work out and watch film. He also won’t have Santonio Holmes at his disposal this year.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 2,800 passing yards. 19 passing TDs. 15 INTs. 75 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 177 (14.8 fantasy ppg; 16-game projection: 236).
Projected 2010 Fantasy Points (QB Friendly): 243.

  • Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Rashard Mendenhall is being overdrafted. He’s going in the first round of many fantasy mocks, and he was even listed as high as No. 10 in Matthew Berry’s pre-NFL Draft top 100.

In the wake of Ben Roethlisberger’s sexual assault charge and subsequent 4-6 game suspension, I’m down on all Steelers this year. Opposing defenses will stack the line of scrimmage for those 4-6 games. After that, it’s reasonable to expect that Roethlisberger won’t be anywhere near 100 percent both mentally and physically. If so, Pittsburgh’s offense will struggle and there will be less goal-line opportunities for Mendenhall.

Also, don’t discount the impact that rookie Jonathan Dwyer will have on this team. Dwyer is a talented runner and could take away some goal-line carries from Mendenhall, who hasn’t exactly thrived in this area.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 1,160 rushing yards. 27 catches. 240 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 182.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 209.

  • Hines Ward, WR, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Hines Ward caught 95 passes for 1,167 yards and six touchdowns in 2010. However, in the one game Ben Roethlisberger missed, Ward had just three grabs for 47 yards. Big Ben could be out for as many as six games this season, so if you draft Ward, you’ll be receiving minimal production out of him for almost a half of your fantasy regular season. And even when Roethlisberger returns to the lineup, there’s no guarantee Ward will match his 2009 per-game production; he just turned 34 and his skills are in decline.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 74 catches. 910 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 201.

  • Mike Wallace, WR, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Mike Wallace caught 39 passes for 756 yards and six touchdowns in 2009. Not bad for a rookie No. 3 receiver. With Santonio Holmes gone, Wallace will be the No. 2 guy and will presumably see his stats soar – that is, after Ben Roethlisberger comes back from his 4-6 game suspension. Don’t expect much from Wallace or Hines Ward until then.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 64 catches. 900 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 126.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 190.

  • Antwaan Randle El, WR, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Antwaan Randle El is Pittsburgh’s slot receiver unless Emmanuel Sanders can take over as a rookie, which is unlikely. Regardless, Randle El is not a fantasy option.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 35 catches. 425 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 54.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 89.

  • Heath Miller, TE, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Like every other Steeler skill-position player, Heath Miller’s numbers will be down because of Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension and questionable preparation in the wake of his sexual assault case.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 61 catches. 650 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 95.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 156.

  • Jeff Reed, K, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Jeff Reed has hit at least 87 percent of his field goals in the past three seasons, so Pittsburgh fans can forgive the fact that he looks like he walked off the set of Jersey Shore. The downside to Reed is his leg power; he’s 1-of-5 from 50-plus since 2007.

    Projected 2009 Fantasy Stats: 25-29 FG (0-2 from 50+; 6-7 from 40-49). 37 XP.
    Projected 2009 Fantasy Points: 117.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers. Bye: 5.
As usual, the Steelers are a great fantasy defense to own. They’ll flirt with 50 sacks again, and Troy Polamalu’s return only means more turnovers.
