2015 Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Running Backs
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
Two years ago, Kansas City Chiefs running back Knile
Davis led all running backs with 31 reps on the bench
press. In 2014, Vikings’ running back Jerick McKinnon paced the players at his position
with 32 reps. This year, the leader was Hawaii’s Joey Isoefa
with 30 reps.
Nebraska’s Ammer Abdullah is a quick, slashing
running back, but he showed that he has some strength to him
by producing 24 reps. Abdullah (5-9, 205) added weight
before last season, and he had more yards after contact as a
result. This is proof that Abdullah was committed to the
weight room.
Indiana running back Tevin Coleman (5-11, 206) had
22 reps, and that is a respectable total. Coleman went under
the radar to a degree playing in Indiana, but that could
change at the Combine.
Two power backs who were impressive in the all-star
games had somewhat disappointing totals. North Dakota
State’s John Crockett (6-0, 217) had 15, while Minnesota’s
David Cobb (5-11, 229) notched 17. It was surprising that they
didn’t produce more.
One power back who was a standout of the Senior
Bowl and didn’t disappoint was Northern Iowa’s David
Johnson. Johnson (6-1, 224) ripped off 25 reps and that
illustrates his power. Don’t be surprised if Johnson ends
up being this year’s Alfred Morris or Zac Stacy.
Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon is the favorite
to be the first running back drafted. Gordon (6-1, 215) is
known for his speed, and he had 19 reps on the bench press.
It wasn’t bad, but not all that impressive either.
Georgia running back Todd Gurley won’t be running
the 40-yard dash because of his ACL injury. Gurley did take
part in the bench press and had 17 reps. It was moderately
disappointing for Gurley (6-1, 222), but he also is focused
on knee rehab, so he deserves some understanding on the
bench press total.
Boise State running back Jay Ajayi (6-0, 221) runs
with power, but he had only 19 reps on the bench press. It
was surprising that Ajayi didn’t produce more.
One of the most harmful performances was from
Florida State’s Karlos Williams. Williams (6-1, 230) is a
big back, but he had only 18 reps.
Williams has a precarious draft standing because of
character concerns, so he can’t afford a bad Combine. It
got off to a bad start in the bench press.
Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon (6-1, 226) is a
smooth runner with strength and quickness. He had a quality
showing in the bench press with 22 reps.
USC running back Buck Allen tied for the worst
performance on the bench press. He had only 11 reps. At 6-foot, 221 pounds, he should have more and it makes one
question how dedicated Allen was to the weight room.
