2015 NFL Combine: Weigh-In Recap – Defensive Backs
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • Alabama safety Landon Collins (6-0, 228) hit his expected measurements. His arm length isn’t impressive (31 3/8 inches). The weigh-in numbers give further proof that Collins is a thumper strong safety and not a deep center fielder.

  • Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu tore an ACL during practice before the Rose Bowl, so he won’t be working out at the Combine. However the weigh-in went well for him, as he hit 5-foot-9, 192 pounds. It was important for Ekpre-Olomu to not check in shorter than 5-foot-9.

  • Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes (6-0, 186) had a solid weigh-in in terms of height and length (31 inches). His weight is a little light, and it would be good if he added 10 pounds for the next level.

  • Stanford cornerback Alex Carter (6-0, 196) displayed some good size and met his listed numbers. He is almost identical to Chicago Bears standout rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller. Like Fuller entering last year’s Combine, there are some questions about Carter’s speed, so a good 40 time could be huge for him.

  • LSU cornerback Jalen Collins could be one of the stars of the Combine. The 6-foot-1, 203-pounder is big with long arms for a cornerback (32 1/8 inches). With his height and length, Collins has the size that teams are looking for. Sources say that Collins also could blaze a fast 40, and that could send his stock skyrocketing.

  • Connecticut defensive back Byron Jones (6-1, 199) is a talented player. Some feel he may end up as a safety, while others feel he can play corner. Thus, his 40 time and field drills are important.

  • Florida State cornerbacks P.J. Williams (6-0, 194) and Ronald Darby (5-11, 193) hit their numbers. Darby also has some significant length in his arms (31 3/8 inches). With his fluid coverage ability, Darby could be a player who raises his stock at the Combine. Williams has size and length (31-inch arms), but he can struggle to prevent separation against good receivers.

  • Louisville safeties Gerod Holliman (6-0, 218) and James Sample (6-2, 209) came in as expected. They each have versatile size to be a safety who flips from free or strong safety. Holliman has tackling issues, and he can’t improve on those at the Combine.

  • Washington cornerback Marcus Peters (6-0, 197) had 31 1/2-inch arms as well. Peters is a good athlete and a first-round player, but his interviews are the most important part of the Combine for him after getting kicked off Washington’s team last year.
