2015 NFL Combine: Field Drills Recap – Quarterbacks
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • For a point of reference, the average of quarterbacks in 2013 in the 40-yard dash was 4.86. Last year the average was 4.86. The 40-yard dash isn’t a critical test for quarterbacks.

  • Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston had some slower-than-expected 40 times of 4.97 and 4.99, but those aren’t relevant to why Winston is the top-rated quarterback and favorite to be the first-overall pick. In the field drills, Winston made some beautiful throws with touch and accuracy. It was an impressive display with his footwork and timing.

Winston ripped off a series of NFL throws and looked like a good NFL starter, taking part in the Combine. NFL teams won’t care about his 40 time, and will be more focused on how great he threw the ball.

  • Everybody knows that Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is a great athlete, but he put a number to it at the Combine. In the 40, Mariota’s official time was 4.52, and that was the best among the quarterbacks. It wasn’t surprising that he ran fast, and obviously he is plenty quick enough to be a running threat.

More importantly for the Ducks point-producer, Mariota made some nice throws in the field work. He threw the ball accurately with touch and showed that he is developing his feet for the next level after playing in a college shotgun offense. Just like Winston, Mariota was impressive at the Combine and was wise to take advantage of the opportunity to throw.

  • UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley (6-3, 226) had a strong Combine. Hundley is a good athlete, so it wasn’t surprising. He ran well with 4.63 time in the 40 and showed off his strong arm in the field drills. Hundley’s issues are in working as a pocket passer and his field vision while working through his progressions. Thus, the Combine isn’t designed for Hundley to address those concerns.

  • Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty had a good day throwing the ball. He showed some nice feet and mechanics with a quality arm. Petty (6-3, 230) ran the 40 in 4.87 seconds, but he obviously has a running element to his game coming from the Bears offense.

  • South Alabama quarterback Brandon Bridge (6-4, 229) showed that he can spin the football. Bridge has a strong arm and looked athletic with a quality 40 time at 4.72. On the third day of the draft, Bridge could be a developmental pick and used the Combine to help get himself consideration for a late-round pick.

  • Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson did not participate in the Combine workout because of an injury.
