Aug. 26, 2010.
This is a real PPR Fantasy Football Draft I participated in on Tuesday, Aug. 24. This was done online at ESPN.com, and involved members of this site’s forum.
This league starts: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 RB/WR, 1 WR/TE, 1 TE, 1 K 1 DEF. It’s 0.8 PPR, and passing touchdowns are six points.
ROUND 1:
(1) Team Landolfi – Chris Johnson RB
(2) Stifler’s Mom – Adrian Peterson RB
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Maurice Jones-Drew RB
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Ray Rice RB
(5) Team Regnier – Andre Johnson WR
(6) Team Montero – Steven Jackson RB
(7) Team Foster – Frank Gore RB
(8) Team Pheltz – Michael Turner RB
(9) Team Lamb – Drew Brees QB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Calvin Johnson WR
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Brandon Marshall WR
(12) Team mpg1995 – DeAngelo Williams RB
ROUND 2:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Aaron Rodgers QB
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Randy Moss WR
(3) WalterFootball.com – Miles Austin-Jones WR
(4) Team Lamb – Larry Fitzgerald WR
(5) Team Pheltz – Roddy White WR
(6) Team Foster – Ryan Grant RB
(7) Team Montero – Reggie Wayne WR
(8) Team Regnier – Shonn Greene RB
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Steve Smith WR (Panthers)
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Cedric Benson RB
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Ryan Mathews RB
(12) Team Landolfi – Rashard Mendenhall RB
MY PICKS: Oh yeah. Back-to-back receivers. In this 0.8 PPR league, we have the option to start four wideouts. Plus, Calvin Johnson and Miles Austin-Jones were the top players on my cheat sheet.
The wide receiver position is so thin this year – it just got worse with Sidney Rice and Demaryius Thomas going down – that opting for the WR-WR route makes a ton of sense.
BEST PICKS: You shouldn’t be able to get Frank Gore at No. 7. If he drops past No. 6 of a PPR league, someone screwed up. More on that later.
Ryan Mathews fell so much that I began thinking that I could land him at 3.10. It’s unbelievable that he went off the board with the penultimate pick in Round 2. How does that happen?
WORST PICKS: Steven Jackson? Poor Montero. I say this because he didn’t make it for the draft and ESPN auto-picked for him. Apparently ESPN didn’t get the memo that the injury-prone Jackson is coming off back surgery.
I like NY Jets QB Nacho’s (great name) second pick more than his first. Nothing wrong with Brandon Marshall, but I wouldn’t spend a first-round selection on him.
ROUND 3:
(1) Team Landolfi – Peyton Manning QB
(2) Stifler’s Mom – DeSean Jackson WR
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Tom Brady QB
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Greg Jennings WR
(5) Team Regnier – Jonathan Stewart RB
(6) Team Montero – Knowshon Moreno RB
(7) Team Foster – Chris Wells RB
(8) Team Pheltz – LeSean McCoy RB
(9) Team Lamb – Sidney Rice WR
(10) WalterFootball.com – Jamaal Charles RB
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Pierre Thomas RB
(12) Team mpg1995 – Marques Colston WR
ROUND 4:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Dallas Clark TE
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Matt Forte RB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Jahvid Best RB
(4) Team Lamb – Anquan Boldin WR
(5) Team Pheltz – Wes Welker WR
(6) Team Foster – Steve Smith WR (Giants)
(7) Team Montero – Joseph Addai RB
(8) Team Regnier – Tony Romo QB
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Dwayne Bowe WR
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Chad Ochocinco WR
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Michael Crabtree WR
(12) Team Landolfi – Ronnie Brown RB
MY PICKS: I know. What the hell, right? When I was on the clock, I noticed that Jamaal Charles wasn’t crossed off my cheat sheet. I thought I missed him, but I checked just to make sure. Nope. No one picked him. W00t!
For anyone who hasn’t watched the Lions this preseason, Jahvid Best is awesome and is being utilized as much as possible.
BEST PICKS: Did you not see me say “W00t” about getting Jamaal Charles at 3.10?
I also loved Jonathan Stewart and LeSean McCoy in their draft slots.
WORST PICKS: ESPN blows. Poor Team Lamb. ESPN didn’t update its rankings for Sidney Rice’s injury for Lamb’s auto pick.
Seriously, what a disgrace. ESPN has millions of employees, yet they couldn’t get anyone to move Rice down? What the hell is Keyshawn Johnson doing that’s so important? Make him do it. Better that than his spending time making up crappy jokes. “Sidney Rice got hurt, and now he’s fried rice!” Ugh.
At any rate, I’m not a fan of where Wes Welker went considering his injury risk.
ROUND 5:
(1) Team Landolfi – Mike Sims-Walker WR
(2) Stifler’s Mom – Philip Rivers QB
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Antonio Gates TE
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Arian Foster RB
(5) Team Regnier – Hakeem Nicks WR
(6) Team Montero – Matt Schaub QB
(7) Team Foster – Vernon Davis TE
(8) Team Pheltz – Jermichael Finley TE
(9) Team Lamb – Ricky Williams RB
(10) WalterFootball.com – C.J. Spiller RB
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Brent Celek TE
(12) Team mpg1995 – Felix Jones RB
ROUND 6:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Reggie Bush RB
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Santana Moss WR
(3) WalterFootball.com – Jeremy Maclin WR
(4) Team Lamb – Brandon Jacobs RB
(5) Team Pheltz – Michael Bush RB
(6) Team Foster – Hines Ward WR
(7) Team Montero – Vincent Jackson WR
(8) Team Regnier – Jerome Harrison RB
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Jason Witten TE
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Justin Forsett RB
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Johnny Knox WR
(12) Team Landolfi – Donald Driver WR
MY PICKS: Unless you can get a quarterback at a great value, keep stacking your running backs and wide receivers really early and late. C.J. Spiller should be very good in a PPR, and I love Jeremy Maclin this year.
BEST PICKS: Arian Foster and Ryan Grant could post similar numbers this year, as they’re in near-identical situations. Yet, Foster lasted until Round 5. That’s still too late for him.
Love Michael Bush. He has moved up yet again in my 2010 Fantasy Football Stock page.
WORST PICKS: Hey, look, ESPN gave Montero Vincent Jackson! Buhahahahahaha!
You can’t justify using a sixth-round pick on Justin Forsett after his miserable performance this past weekend. Leon Washington could be the starter.
ROUND 7:
(1) Team Landolfi – Tony Gonzalez TE
(2) Stifler’s Mom – Owen Daniels TE
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Pierre Garcon WR
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Joe Flacco QB
(5) Team Regnier – Malcom Floyd WR
(6) Team Montero – Mike Wallace WR
(7) Team Foster – Brett Favre QB
(8) Team Pheltz – Matt Ryan QB
(9) Team Lamb – Marion Barber RB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Ahmad Bradshaw RB
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Cadillac Williams RB
(12) Team mpg1995 – Percy Harvin WR
ROUND 8:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Braylon Edwards WR
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Jerricho Cotchery WR
(3) WalterFootball.com – Terrell Owens WR
(4) Team Lamb – Clinton Portis RB
(5) Team Pheltz – Bernard Berrian WR
(6) Team Foster – T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR
(7) Team Montero – Kellen Winslow Jr. TE
(8) Team Regnier – Mike Williams WR
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Donald Brown RB
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Steve Breaston WR
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Dez Bryant WR
(12) Team Landolfi – Robert Meachem WR
MY PICKS: How does Brandon Jacobs go a full round before Ahmad Bradshaw in a PPR draft? I’m sure this wouldn’t happen if ESPN’s crappy auto-picks kept giving Montero and Lamb crappy players, but still.
Here’s another one – Chad Ochocinco shouldn’t be getting picked before Terrell Owens. Ochocinco has been awful this preseason, while Owens has thrived. Read all about it in my 2010 NFL Preseason Recap page.
BEST PICKS: If Bradshaw wasn’t there in the seventh, I probably would have selected Cadillac Williams. He really looks rejuvenated this preseason.
Actually, if Joe Flacco were available at 7.10, I would have passed on both Bradshaw and Williams. Note that I don’t have a quarterback yet. Am I screwed? We’ll see.
WORST PICKS: If I were in a league that had 500 rounds, I don’t think I’d consider drafting T.J. Houshmandzadeh until Round 335. Mayyybbeee Round 334.
I would wait on Owen Daniels and Kellen Winslow until Round 10. Taking a tight end with knee problems when there are just so many more available is not something I’m interested in.
ROUND 9:
(1) Team Landolfi – Darren McFadden RB
(2) Stifler’s Mom – Steve Slaton RB
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Thomas Jones RB
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Jabar Gaffney WR
(5) Team Regnier – Chris Cooley TE
(6) Team Montero – Jets Defense
(7) Team Foster – Jay Cutler QB
(8) Team Pheltz – Eli Manning QB
(9) Team Lamb – Fred Jackson RB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Kevin Kolb QB
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Ben Roethlisberger QB
(12) Team mpg1995 – Kenny Britt WR
ROUND 10:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Kevin Smith RB
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Matthew Stafford QB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Donovan McNabb QB
(4) Team Lamb – Lee Evans WR
(5) Team Pheltz – Visanthe Shiancoe TE
(6) Team Foster – Santonio Holmes WR
(7) Team Montero – Darren Sproles RB
(8) Team Regnier – Devin Aromashodu WR
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Chad Henne QB
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Eagles Defense
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Tim Hightower RB
(12) Team Landolfi – Packers Defense
MY PICKS: So, I waited until Round 9 to grab my quarterback. I happened to land Kevin Kolb and Donovan McNabb. Not bad, right? This is why you can wait on quarterbacks this year. There are just so many guys who can start this year. Stacking the receiver position is far more important because that position is really thin.
BEST PICKS: Jabar Gaffney is looking better and better for PPR leagues with Demaryius Thomas unable to stay healthy.
Team Regnier did a great job waiting on his tight end. Chris Cooley is great value in Round 9.
WORST PICKS: Darren McFadden? Keyshawn, why aren’t you updating these rankings? “Darren McFadden sounds like an Irish name, so he should be traded to Notre Dame.”
Here’s another one: Poor Team Lamb gets an injured Fred Jackson. Keyshawn? “Fred Jackson and former U.S. President Andrew Jackson – no relation.”
ROUND 11:
(1) Team Landolfi – LaDainian Tomlinson RB
(2) Stifler’s Mom – Willis McGahee RB
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Chester Taylor RB
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Zach Miller TE
(5) Team Regnier – Montario Hardesty RB
(6) Team Montero – Chaz Schilens WR
(7) Team Foster – Ravens Defense
(8) Team Pheltz – Louis Murphy WR
(9) Team Lamb – Early Doucet WR
(10) WalterFootball.com – John Carlson TE
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Leon Washington RB
(12) Team mpg1995 – Vince Young QB
ROUND 12:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Austin Collie WR
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Nate Washington WR
(3) WalterFootball.com – Heath Miller TE
(4) Team Lamb – Cowboys Defense
(5) Team Pheltz – Marshawn Lynch RB
(6) Team Foster – Laurence Maroney RB
(7) Team Montero – Derrick Mason WR
(8) Team Regnier – Tashard Choice RB
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Fred Taylor RB
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Nate Kaeding K
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Carson Palmer QB
(12) Team Landolfi – Stephen Gostkowski K
MY PICKS: Two tight ends? I normally hate having backup tight ends, but we have the option to start two in this league. So, if John Carlson gets hurt and I don’t have a viable backup, I’d be screwed because almost every team would have at least two tight ends on the roster.
BEST PICKS: I liked several picks in Rounds 11-12, including Montario Hardesty, Leon Washington and Nate Washington. All three are listed in my 2010 Fantasy Football High-Upside Late-Round Sleepers.
WORST PICKS: Chaz Schilens is hurt. Sucks for Team Montero. Unfortunately, Keyshawn can’t think of a nifty joke because he doesn’t know who Schilens is.
Two kickers in Round 12? C’mon, guys. Taking a kicker in Round 12 says that you’ve run out of players you’re familiar with in your fantasy mag, and are just picking kickers to bide your time.
ROUND 13:
(1) Team Landolfi – Devery Henderson WR
(2) Stifler’s Mom – 49ers Defense
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Vikings Defense
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Mohamed Massaquoi WR
(5) Team Regnier – Dolphins Defense
(6) Team Montero – Correll Buckhalter RB
(7) Team Foster – Ryan Longwell K
(8) Team Pheltz – Javon Ringer RB
(9) Team Lamb – Greg Olsen TE
(10) WalterFootball.com – Legedu Naanee WR
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Cardinals Defense
(12) Team mpg1995 – Steelers Defense
ROUND 14:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Rob Bironas K
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Brian Westbrook RB
(3) WalterFootball.com – Bengals Defense
(4) Team Lamb – David Akers K
(5) Team Pheltz – Kevin Walter WR
(6) Team Foster – Derrick Ward RB
(7) Team Montero – Mason Crosby K
(8) Team Regnier – Fred Davis TE
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Saints Defense
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Josh Morgan WR
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Tony Scheffler TE
(12) Team Landolfi – Nate Burleson WR
MY PICKS: I wanted Legedu Naanee. I did not want the Bengals defense. I actually wanted to draft Anthony Armstrong. Unfortunately, he wasn’t listed. OK, so ESPN just blows. I then went to New England’s roster to look for Julian Edelman. He wasn’t there either. Keyshawn, you suck!
Actually, what happened was that I reached my roster limit for receivers, so no wideouts were showing up. So much for stacking receivers, right?
BEST PICKS: Welker’s Left Knee just got a No. 1 receiver in Round 13. Believe it or not, Jake Delhomme has been playing well this preseason. With his son safe and sound at home, Delhomme could help the talented Mohamed approach 1,000 yards.
I don’t really see anything else I’m in love with, so I’ll pretend I took Armstrong or Edelman with my 14th-round selection. What a great pick! Go me!
WORST PICKS: Derrick Ward probably won’t make the team. That’s the only pick I really hate besides the kicker in Round 13.
ROUND 15:
(1) Team Landolfi – David Garrard QB
(2) Stifler’s Mom – David Buehler K
(3) Ohio State Buckeyes – Garrett Hartley K
(4) Welker’s Left Knee – Matt Prater K
(5) Team Regnier – Jason Campbell QB
(6) Team Montero – Jay Feely K
(7) Team Foster – Joey Galloway WR
(8) Team Pheltz – Robbie Gould K
(9) Team Lamb – Mark Sanchez QB
(10) WalterFootball.com – Dan Carpenter K
(11) NY Jets QB Nacho – Dustin Keller TE
(12) Team mpg1995 – Toby Gerhart RB
ROUND 16:
(1) Team mpg1995 – Jermaine Gresham TE
(2) NY Jets QB Nacho – Sebastian Janikowski K
(3) WalterFootball.com – Chargers Defense
(4) Team Lamb – Kevin Boss TE
(5) Team Pheltz – Giants Defense
(6) Team Foster – Broncos Defense
(7) Team Montero – Jeremy Shockey TE
(8) Team Regnier – Neil Rackers K
(9) Welker’s Left Knee – Larry Johnson RB
(10) Ohio State Buckeyes – Golden Tate WR
(11) Stifler’s Mom – Eddie Royal WR
(12) Team Landolfi – Lawrence Tynes K
MY PICKS: A kicker in Round 15. As for the Chargers, I’ll be using them against the crappy Chiefs in Week 1. I can’t start the Bengals defense against the Patriots, so I need some alternative. Read my 2010 Fantasy Football Defense Strategy for more.
BEST PICKS: I say the three players who have the most upside in these final rounds are Dustin Keller, Jermaine Gresham and Eddie Royal.
WORST PICKS: Oh, Keyshawn, what the hell are you doing!? You gave Montero two kickers!
“I gave Montero two kickers because kickers have two feet.”
The lesson as always: Do your fantasy draft live and in person unless you want Keyshawn Johnson making selections for several of your league owners.
