2010 Fantasy Football Rankings: Wide Receivers 21-40

These 2010 Fantasy Football Wide Receivers Rankings will be updated often throughout the summer, so make sure you check back from time to time. Also, be sure to check out my other 2010 Fantasy Football articles, which will include sleepers, busts, tons of 2010 Fantasy Football mock drafts and other material.

MISSING

  1. Terrell Owens, WR, Bengals. Bye: 6.
AUG. 21 UPDATE: Unlike Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens had a solid performance against the Eagles. Owens was targeted four times and came up with three grabs for 67 yards, including a 43-yard fade along the right sideline.

AUG. 16 UPDATE: While Chad Ochocinco wasn’t much of a factor on Sunday night, Terrell Owens caught four balls for 23 yards on six targets. Amazingly, he’s functioning as Cincinnati’s No. 1 receiver despite being on the team for less than a month.

AUG. 9 UPDATE: While Carson Palmer struggled, Terrell Owens looked pretty good; he caught two passes for 18 yards. Owens was targeted a whopping five times, and looked like he truly was the “Batman” of the receiving corps.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Terrell Owens is a Cincinnati Bengal! Has there ever been a more natural player-team fit in the history of the NFL? Owens is usually a trouble-maker and leaves locker rooms ruined in his wake, but if there’s one place where that won’t matter, it’s Cincinnati. Owens proved last year that he can still be productive, so he could have a solid season if Carson Palmer is close to 100 percent. That’s a big if though.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 70 catches. 1,030 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 139.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 209.

  2. Santana Moss, WR, Redskins. Bye: 9.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Based on his body language, Santana Moss seems thrilled to be playing with a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback for the first time in his career. Moss saw six targets against the Ravens, catching four of them for 79 yards. As I’ve said all summer, Moss could have a career year because he has never played with any signal-caller nearly as talented as McNabb.

AUG. 5 UPDATE: Roger Goodell told the Washington Post that no suspension for Santana Moss is forthcoming in the wake of his HGH allegations. This is great news given how thin the receivers are this year. Moss is safe to draft as a low WR2, high WR3.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Santana Moss’ quarterbacks over his career: Vinny Testaverde, Chad Pennington, Patrick Ramsey, an aging Mark Brunell, Jason Campbell and Todd Collins. Think Donovan McNabb’s a bit better than those six?

Moss generated 902 yards and three touchdowns last year. That obviously wasn’t his fault; the offensive line gave Campbell no time to locate Moss downfield. And when Campbell had ample time in the pocket, he just didn’t have the talent to maximize Moss’ potential.

McNabb changes everything. Assuming he stays healthy, Moss should have one of the best seasons of his career. Moss is only 31, so it’s not like he’s over the hill quite yet.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 73 catches. 1,025 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 138.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 211.

  3. Johnny Knox, WR, Bears. Bye: 8.
AUG. 30 UPDATE: Jay Cutler’s favorite target clearly is Johnny Knox. Knox saw more targets from Cutler (8) than Devin Aromashodu and Devin Hester combined (7) against the Cardinals. Knox finished with three catches for 57 yards, including a 41-yard bomb.

AUG. 16 UPDATE: Chicago’s first-team offense played only one drive in the preseason opener. In fact, Jay Cutler attempted just two passes, both of which went to Johnny Knox. Knox’s two receptions transformed for 47 yards. He has clearly emerged as Cutler’s No. 1 receiver, and should be targeted in the seventh round of all leagues.

AUG. 1 UPDATE: Jay Cutler threw to Johnny Knox more than any receiver on Friday. We’ll see what happens in the preseason games, but with Devin Aromashodu getting all the hype, Knox has a great value.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: I like Johnny Knox as a mid-round fantasy sleeper. Knox had 45 receptions for 527 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie last season. Now, his stats have the potential to soar with Mike Martz as his offensive coordinator. Jay Cutler will be throwing early and often, and it seems as though he and Knox developed a rapport in their brief time together.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 73 catches. 960 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 138.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 211.

  4. Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Jaguars. Bye: 9.
Mike Sims-Walker had 63 catches for 869 yards and seven touchdowns last year, but he was either feast or famine. On five occasions, he caught at least six passes. On six others, he was limited to two receptions or fewer. It’s worth noting that he suffered through a calf injury in the second half of the year, which was when most of his poor performances took place.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 73 catches. 1,000 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 142.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 215.

  5. Pierre Garcon, WR, Colts. Bye: 7.
I’ve made it known that I’m not a fan of Reggie Wayne this season. I’d actually almost rather have Pierre Garcon on my fantasy roster. He’s younger and doesn’t have a potential knee issue.

Garcon caught 47 passes for 765 yards and four touchdowns in 2009, but didn’t really come on until Week 8, as he played erratically before then. In Garcon’s final nine full games of the year, including his impressive playoff run, he caught 50 balls for 723 yards and four touchdowns. Transpose that over a full 16-game slate, and Garcon’s numbers become: 89 catches, 1,285 yards and seven touchdowns. Not bad.

I won’t project Garcon to match those numbers, but I do think he has a very good chance of eclipsing the 1,000-yard barrier in his second season as a starter.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 65 catches. 1,025 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 138.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 203.

  6. Mike Wallace, WR, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Mike Wallace caught 39 passes for 756 yards and six touchdowns in 2009. Not bad for a rookie No. 3 receiver. With Santonio Holmes gone, Wallace will be the No. 2 guy and will presumably see his stats soar – that is, after Ben Roethlisberger comes back from his 4-6 game suspension. Don’t expect much from Wallace or Hines Ward until then.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 64 catches. 975 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 133.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 197.

  7. Derrick Mason, WR, Ravens. Bye: 8.
AUG. 30 UPDATE: Despite the addition of Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason has led the Ravens in targets the past two games. He saw 10 looks against the Giants, including two in the red zone, catching five balls for 35 yards. He remains a PPR monster.

AUG. 23 UPDATE: For the second week in a row, Joe Flacco’s favorite target was Derrick Mason. Mason managed only two catches for four yards, but was thrown to five times. Despite the addition of Anquan Boldin (1 catch, 21 yards), Flacco just seems most comfortable throwing to Mason, who should continue to be a good PPR option.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Derrick Mason has amazingly topped 1,000 receiving yards in all but one season dating back to 2001. He has been the epitome of consistency. Unfortunately, this looks like the year that Mason will fall off. I’m not expecting a huge decline, but he’s no longer the No. 1 wideout on the team. He also turned 36 in January.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 75 catches. 950 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 131.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 206.

  8. Chad Ochocinco, WR, Bengals. Bye: 6.
AUG. 21 UPDATE: Prior to the Eagles game, Chad Ochocinco had been having a miserable preseason. That continued Friday night. Ochocinco was able to catch two balls for 29 yards, but was responsible for two interceptions. He ran the wrong route the first time and had the ball pop out of his hands on the second pick. Carson Palmer targeted Ochocinco more than any other player (6 times), so it’s actually discouraging that he came up with only two receptions.

AUG. 16 UPDATE: Chad Ochocinco hasn’t done anything this preseason. In two contests, he’s been targeted only three times, making one 4-yard catch. At this point you have to wonder if Ochocinco’s ridiculous reality endeavors have ruined his 2010 season.

AUG. 9 UPDATE: Chad Ochocinco didn’t do much against the Cowboys; he didn’t catch a single pass and was targeted once. He looked like a clear-cut “Robin” to Terrell Owens’ “Batman.” Perhaps Ochocinco should have spent more time working out and less time on his $10 reality TV shows this offseason.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Reasons not to like Chad Ochocinco this year:

    1. He just turned 32.

    2. Carson Palmer is clearly not the same quarterback he was prior to all of his injuries.

    3. Antonio Bryant, Matt Jones, Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham. Ochocinco’s targets will decrease with these four players on the roster (though he’ll draw more single coverage). I’m more concerned that Palmer will look for Gresham instead of Ochocinco in the end zone. It’s reasonable to expect Ochocinco’s touchdown total of nine to drop in 2010.

    4. Participating in Eating Cereal With the Stars and other stupid $10 reality TV shows may have deterred Ochocinco from working out as much as he’d like to this offseason. Is he in 100-percent shape? I have my doubts.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 67 catches. 940 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 130.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 197.

  9. Mike Williams, WR, Buccaneers. Bye: 4.
AUG. 31 UPDATE: Josh Freeman didn’t play for the Buccaneers, but that didn’t stop Mike Williams from producing. Williams caught three passes for 83 yards. His longest play was a 53-yard reception, which wasn’t as impressive as it sounds because Jacksonville’s corner fell down. However, Williams had a great back-shoulder reception in the third quarter. Quite simply, he doesn’t look like a rookie at all. As I’ve been saying, make sure you get Williams on your team because he is a stud.

AUG. 24 UPDATE: I’m going to capitalize the following because it’s very important: GET MIKE WILLIAMS ONTO YOUR FANTASY ROSTER! Williams is an unbelievable receiver who does nothing but make awesome catches. Williams had three receptions for 44 yards against the Chiefs. On one of the incompletions thrown his way, Williams made an unbelievable leaping catch from Josh Johnson, but the defensive back pushed him out of bounds while still in the air. Williams, one of the favorites to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, is going to have a huge season.

AUG. 15 UPDATE: All the talk this offseason regarding the Bucs has been about rookie receiver Mike Williams. The Syracuse product didn’t disappoint in the exhibition opener, catching a 30-yard bomb from Josh Freeman. I love Williams as a late-round flier with a ton of upside.

AUG. 3 UPDATE: Mike Williams has parlayed his great minicamp into an impressive start in training camp. Williams – not Arrelious Benn – is the Tampa Bay wide receiver you want. He’s worth a shot in the final rounds of your fantasy draft this summer.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Like Arrelious Benn, Mike Williams will be in the starting lineup despite being a rookie. Williams has attitude issues, but so far so good – the Syracuse product has been brilliant in Tampa Bay minicamps. Williams isn’t the consensus favorite to lead the Buccaneers wideouts in receiving yardage, but he’s mine.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 63 catches. 925 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 128.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 191.

  10. Hines Ward, WR, Steelers. Bye: 5.
Hines Ward caught 95 passes for 1,167 yards and six touchdowns in 2010. However, in the one game Ben Roethlisberger missed, Ward had just three grabs for 47 yards. Big Ben could be out for as many as six games this season, so if you draft Ward, you’ll be receiving minimal production out of him for almost a half of your fantasy regular season. And even when Roethlisberger returns to the lineup, there’s no guarantee Ward will match his 2009 per-game production; he just turned 34 and his skills are in decline.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 74 catches. 910 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 201.

  11. Donald Driver, WR, Packers. Bye: 10.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: I’ve been harping about Donald Driver’s knees all offseason, but the 35-year-old wideout is doing a great job of proving me wrong. Driver saw eight targets against the Colts, catching five balls for 35 yards and a touchdown. I’m moving Driver up my 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings, but I’m still going to have him lower than most publications. Driver had two offseason knee surgeries, so that’s something that could come into play toward the middle of the season.

AUG. 17 UPDATE: Donald Driver caught all three targets thrown his way in the preseason opener, notching 19 yards. Driver was moving around pretty well and will be moved up in my 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings. If you plan on drafting him as a starter, however, remember that he’s a 35-year-old coming off two knee surgeries. It’s unrealistic to expect Driver to stay healthy all season.

JULY 27 UPDATE: More bad news concerning Donald Driver – offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said the following of his 35-year-old receiver: “We have to see what happens to Driver’s knee when he comes back. I haven’t seen him do anything since Jan. 10.” Driver’s two offseason knee surgeries make him undraftable until Round 13.

JUNE 23 UPDATE: Donald Driver still isn’t practicing. Driver had two knee scopes back in January, and at 35, he’s not healing as quickly as he used to. Avoid him unless he really falls during your fantasy draft.

JUNE 11 UPDATE: Packers.com recently revealed that Donald Driver had arthroscopic surgery on both of his knees following the 2009 season. One knee surgery is bad enough, but two? Driver turned 35 on Feb. 2, so this is terrible news for his 2010 fantasy prospects.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Donald Driver amazingly has put together six consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns. A seventh will be very difficult considering that he just turned 35, but it’s certainly not out of the question. Still, I’d be cautious about drafting such an old player.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 65 catches. 900 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 192.

  12. Lee Evans, WR, Bills. Bye: 6.
AUG. 31 UPDATE: Lee Evans should have a solid, WR3-type fantasy campaign. He caught only one pass for eight yards in a half of action against the Bengals, but saw three targets, including a deep bomb downfield. Evans is the No. 1 option again in Buffalo’s passing attack, so his numbers are bound to increase over last year’s totals.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: No. 2 receivers on miserable offenses just don’t produce. Lee Evans had 44 catches for 612 yards and seven touchdowns last year, as Terrell Owens was the only fantasy receiver of relevance. However, Owens is gone, which means Evans will receive more targets again. In the three years prior to 2009, Evans tallied 1,290, 849 and 1,017 yards, so this is a nice buy-low situation. Don’t expect too many touchdowns though.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 900 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 126.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 186.

  13. Legedu Naanee, WR, Chargers. Bye: 10.
AUG. 16 UPDATE: Of Philip Rivers’ six passes in the preseason opener, three went to Legedu Naanee. Naanee turned his three targets into one catch that happened to be a 28-yard touchdown. He also had a 6-yard completion that was wiped out by a penalty. With Vincent Jackson likely to hold out the entire year, Naanee is suddenly a viable option as a WR3.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: In the wake of Vincent Jackson’s suspension, Legedu Naanee will start the first three games of the season. He may even be a starter the entire year if Vincent Jackson’s shipped off to Seattle or Washington.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 58 catches. 880 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 124.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 182.

  14. Wes Welker, WR, Patriots. Bye: 5.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: Wes Welker saw just two targets against the Rams. He caught both balls for 41 yards, but simply doesn’t look like the same receiver. Julian Edelman might actually be the better option right now, which makes me wonder why the Patriots are hurrying Welker back from his horrific knee injury. He’s simply going way too early in fantasy drafts.

AUG. 20 UPDATE: If you were to tell me in January that Wes Welker would be playing in the second preseason game in the wake of his horrific knee injury in the 2009 finale, I wouldn’t have believed you. Lo and behold, not only did Welker start; he saw three targets on the opening drive. Welker caught two of those passes for 20 yards. He also took some nasty hits, yet was able to get up quickly.

Having said all that, I still wouldn’t take Welker unless he really fell in my fantasy draft. I think he’s coming back way too early. I hope I’m wrong, but it’ll be a surprise if he doesn’t re-injure himself.

JULY 24 UPDATE: First, the good news: Wes Welker isn’t medically cleared to practice yet, but a Patriots radio station is reporting that he will be cleared for training camp. If that happens, Welker won’t be eligible for the PUP, meaning that he could start the season opener.

The bad news: Welker suffered a major knee in the 2009 finale. There’s no way he’s fully recovered by now. It seems to me that Welker and/or the Patriots are pushing this way too quickly. I would actually be surprised if Welker didn’t re-injure himself. Furthermore, given the news that Welker could play right away, his ADP is going to soar. He’s no longer a quality value for the risk he presents. I suggest staying away from him during your fantasy drafts unless he actually slips in your league.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Picking up Wes Welker at the end of your fantasy draft and stashing him on your bench until Thanksgiving may seem like a good idea. Just keep in mind that even if Welker returns to the lineup, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll be anywhere near 100 percent in the wake of his torn ACL and MCL.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 72 catches. 780 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 102 (16-game projection: 120).
    Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 174 (16-game projection: 211).

  15. Mohamed Massaquoi, WR, Browns. Bye: 8.
AUG. 17 UPDATE: Mohamed Massaquoi was very impressive in the preseason opener. He caught all three of his targets on the first drive, turning those completions into 36 yards. Massaquoi is a No. 1 receiver with upside whom you can land in the double-digit rounds.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Mohamed Massaquoi caught 34 passes for 624 yards and three touchdowns last year, teasing us with performances like his eight-catch, 148-yard outing against the Bengals, and his five-catch, 115-yard output at Detroit. Until Cleveland has a legitimate quarterback, however, Massaquoi will be nothing more than a fantasy backup.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 55 catches. 900 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 120.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 175.

  16. Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys. Bye: 4.
AUG. 1 UPDATE: So much for all the Dez Bryant fantasy hype. Bryant suffered a high ankle sprain and is now hoping to return in the final preseason game. This wouldn’t be a big deal if Bryant were a veteran, but any rookie needs reps in training camp and exhibition games. Bryant should still finish the year strong, but don’t count on him to do much early on.

JULY 26 UPDATE: More good news for Dez Bryant – per multiple reports, Bryant had a brilliant weekend of training camp. He made numerous one-handed catches near the sideline, beat top corner Mike Jenkins and thrilled observers. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram suggests that it’s only a matter of time before Bryant starts. The bottom line is that you want this guy on your team. Even if he has a slow couple of weeks to start off, he’ll finish really strong this season – just in time for your playoff run.

JULY 23 UPDATE: A few days ago, ESPN Dallas speculated that Dez Bryant would hold out for top 10 money because of his agent Eugene Parker. Bryant ironically was the first opening-round player to sign a contract. By signing so early, Bryant will get all of the reps in training camp, building off his strong minicamp performance. Make sure you grab Bryant in the middle rounds because he’s going to have a big impact this year – more so in the second half of the year when he has experience.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Dez Bryant’s overblown character concerns dropped him all the way to No. 24 in the 2010 NFL Draft, where the Cowboys happily scooped him up. This was probably better for Bryant, as he’ll be in a highly productive offense with talented targets like Miles Austin-Jones and Jason Witten, who will draw attention from him.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 51 catches. 800 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 116.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 167.

  17. Robert Meachem, WR, Saints. Bye: 10.
SEPT. 1 UPDATE: Robert Meachem reportedly is struggling with a toe injury right now that could limit him early in the season. Meachem is still a solid reserve though who should be able to post bigger numbers later in the year.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: In just his second season in action, Robert Meachem caught 43 passes for 710 yards and nine touchdowns, serving as a great deep-ball threat for Drew Brees. Meachem’s problem is consistency; Brees has so many targets that Meachem could go for a few games without doing something big, and then suddenly post an eight-catch, 140-yard outing. Still, he’s growing and maturing as a player, so there’s no reason to believe that he’ll regress in 2010.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 800 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 1116.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 166.

  18. Braylon Edwards, WR, Jets. Bye: 7.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Braylon Edwards saw just three targets versus the Redskins, catching two balls for 31 yards. Mark Sanchez is really struggling right now, so it’s difficult to get excited about Edwards’ fantasy season.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: The Jets didn’t trade for Santonio Holmes to just run the ball non-stop. Mark Sanchez will be airing it out more often, which means more targets for his No. 1 receiver, Braylon Edwards. Edwards may not break 1,000 yards, but his large frame could allow him to score at least seven touchdowns this season.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 780 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 114.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 165.

  19. Nate Washington, WR, Titans. Bye: 9.
I talked to someone a few hours before the Arizona game with inside knowledge of the Titans. He told me that Nate Washington has had an unbelievable training camp, and suggested that I should monitor him tonight for fantasy purposes. I didn’t think much of it; after all, Nate Washington is Nate Washington. Man, was I wrong. Washington was definitely the best receiver on the field. He saw six targets and caught three balls for 44 yards. Washington’s upside remains limited because the Titans have a run-heavy offense, but he is definitely the receiver to own on Tennessee.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 775 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 113.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 163.

  20. Santonio Holmes, WR, Jets. Bye: 7.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Santonio Holmes and Mark Sanchez just don’t have any sort of rhythm going. Holmes was targeted only twice and was able to come up with just one reception for 23 yards against Washington. Many fantasy players are drafting Holmes, eagerly waiting to use him when he returns from suspension in Week 5. Based on what I’ve seen this preseason, it doesn’t seem like he’s going to have much of an impact.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: With Mark Sanchez entering his second year and San Antonio Holmes in the mix, the Jets will be throwing much more this season compared to 2009. Holmes should be good for about 50 receptions, 800 yards and 4-5 touchdowns. This, of course, factors in his four-game suspension. If you draft him, you won’t have his services for nearly a third of your regular season.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 46 catches. 740 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 98 (131 per 16).
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 144.
