2015 NFL Combine: Field Drills Recap – Offensive Linemen
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
For a point of reference, the average for interior offensive linemen at the combine in 2013 was
5.36 and 5.21 in 2014. Offensive tackles typically run a little bit faster. In the 10-yard split, the
average was 1.79 seconds in 2013 and 1.80 in 2012.
LSU left tackle La’el Collins (6-4, 305) had maybe one of the best days of any offensive lineman.
He moved well in the field drills and showed some explosion with smooth hip transition. Collins ran well
in the 40 with an unofficial time of 5.13 and a 10-yard split of 1.81. There is debate about Collins’
fit at left tackle, right tackle, or guard. On Friday, Collins gave some evidence to those that think
that he can develop into a left tackle.
After leading all of the offensive linemen in the bench press, Miami’s Ereck Flowers had a good
workout in the field drills. Flowers (6-6, 329) had an unofficial 40 time of 5.29 and a 10-yard split of
1.78. That is a fast time considering Flowers is heavier than most of the top offensive linemen. In the
field work, Flowers slid well while showing real power and shock in his hands in the pads drills. He did
well in the mirror drill, but needs a little work to stay compact and not get his arms wide. Flowers is
only 20 years old and is full of potential.
Pittsburgh offensive tackle T.J. Clemmings (6-4, 309) had a mixed outing on Friday. He had a quality 40-yard dash with an unofficial time of 5.15 and a 10-yard split of 1.80. In the field drills, Clemmings
showed good lateral slide and movement. He is athletic and quick, but he gets too tall and wide in his
shuffle. That hurts his change of direction and knee bend. That explains why Clemmings can struggle with
speed rushers, as he did at the Senior Bowl. Clemmings has a good skill, but he is very much a work in
progress.
Stanford’s Andrus Peat (6-7, 312) showed off his
impressive body. Peat is tall and long with a powerful lower
body. In the 40-yard dash, Peat showed his natural skill
with an unofficial 40 time of 5.2 and a 10-yard split of
1.81. He looked a little tight in the field drills, and
that illustrated that Peat is going to need some work in
the NFL to increase his agility for speed rushers. He needs
to get more consistent, but Peat has the natural physical
talent to be a potential impact left tackle.
It has become a consensus opinion that Iowa tackle
Brandon Scherff will have to move to guard in the NFL. He
did well in the 40 with an unofficial time of 5.07 with a
10-yard split of 1.78. In the field drills, Scherff was
moving well before tweaking a muscle. He ended his day
early after that, but Scherff did enough at the Combine to
maintain his first-round status.
Oregon offensive tackle Jake Fisher was expected to
impress considering how the Ducks’ offense is based on
athleticism up front and at the skill positions. Fisher (6-
6, 306) had the second-fastest 40 time at 5.01 unofficially
with 1.75 in the 10-yard split. In the field work, he
continued to excel with good lateral movement and sliding
quickly in the mirror drills. Fisher has short arms and
could be better off as a right tackle.
Of the interior linemen, Florida State’s left tackle-turned-center Cameron Erving finished off an excellent
Combine. Earlier, he showed a well-put-together body: good
height, weight and length. He showed strength in the weight
room and then athleticism in the field drills. He ran well
in the 40-yard dash with a time of 5.16 and a split of
1.84. In the field drills, he was quick, but a little stiff.
That stiffness illustrates why he’s better at center rather
than tackle, but Erving really had a strong showing to help
his draft stock.
The Hobart (Division III) star Ali Marpet had a breakout
Senior Bowl. Marpet (6-4, 307) had the
fastest 40 time with an unofficial 5.00. He also
moved smoothly in the field and showed some natural athleticism. After a
nice week in Mobile, Marpet continued his upward climb with
his Combine performance.
Florida left tackle D.J. Humphries looked good, as
expected. Humphries (6-5, 307) is very quick and athletic,
so it isn’t surprising that he did well in the field
drills. In the 40-yard dash, he had a quality unofficial
time of 5.13 with a 10-yard split 1.81. In the field drills,
Humphries showed fluid hips and some trademark quick feet.
There is no doubt that Humphries did well at the Combine.
However, how he interviewed and how his medical check went
will be crucial as he had a lot of injuries in college.
Colorado State left tackle Ty Sambrailo didn’t
impress at the Combine. In the field drills, he showed that
he needs to add power and is stiff in his technique. His 40
time was slower than average as well at 5.37 seconds,
unofficially. It looks like Sambrailo (6-6, 311) needs at
least one redshirt year in the NFL.
