2015 NFL Combine: Field Drills Recap – Running Backs
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • The consensus top running back in the draft is Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon. He had a solid, but unspectacular Combine performance. His unofficial 40 time of 4.52 was fine, but many thought he would be in the high 4.4s. However, Gordon looked good in the field drills. For a 6-foot-1, 215-pound back, Gordon displayed a natural ability to sink his hips and bend at the knees while cutting. That keeps his pad level down and prevents him from running upright. Gordon also caught passes well in the receiving drills. While Gordon didn’t blow the Combine away, he did well enough to secure his standing in the first round.

  • Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah had a mixed Combine. His 40 time of 4.61 seconds, unofficially, was slower than expected. However, he was superb in the field drills. His cutting and receiving ability were tremendous, as he glided through the cone drills and changed directions on a dime. His hands looked natural as well. Abdullah (5-9, 205) will probably improve on that 40 at his pro day.

  • One of the most impressive backs at the Senior Bowl was Northern Iowa’s David Johnson. His Combine continued his excellent postseason. Johnson (6-1, 224) did well in the bench press on Friday before looking good on the field a day later. He ran the 40 in an impressive time of 4.50, unofficially. He also caught the ball well in receiving drills. Johnson looks like he could be a mid-round steal.

  • Michigan State running back Jeremy Langford is sneaky fast, as he blazed a fast 40, much faster than expected. He had a 4.43 unofficial time in the 40-yard dash, and that was the fastest time of any back at the Combine. Langord (6-0, 208) did his part to cause teams to give him more consideration.

  • Miami running back Duke Johnson (5-9, 207) clocked an unofficial 40 of 4.55 seconds. While that time was rather average, he did well in the field drills and displayed excellent feet to change direction. He also was very solid as a receiver. Johnson looks secure as a second-round pick.

  • Boise State Jay Ajayi had some draft momentum building, but he didn’t help it with a 40 time of 4.57 seconds, unofficially. It wasn’t bad, but Ajayi would have helped himself if he could have posted a faster time. Ajayi (6-0, 221) did fine in the field work, but didn’t really stand out.

  • USC running back Buck Allen (6-0, 221) did terribly in the bench press with 11 reps, tied for dead last among running backs. However, he bounced back in the field drills. He had a quality 40 time of 4.53 seconds for a back his size. He also did well in the field drills. Allen needed that after his Friday performance.

  • Another back who performed better on Saturday was Florida State’s Karlos Williams. He opened some eyes with a 40 time of 4.48 seconds, which was one of the faster times. Williams also did well in the field drills.

  • Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon (6-1, 226) didn’t impress at the Combine. He ran slower than expected in the 40 at 4.61 seconds. He also looked a little stiff and upright in the field drills. Yeldon looks like he has bulked up too much and should consider trimming down to get faster.

  • Another back who didn’t do enough to stand out was South Carolina’s Mike Davis. Davis (5-9, 217) had an unofficial 40 time of 4.61 and didn’t do all that well in the field drills. His medical check was important after being banged up throughout 2014.
