2013 Fantasy Football Rankings - Tight Ends (Sept. 2):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-45

  1. Marcedes Lewis, TE, Jaguars. Bye: 9.
Marcedes Lewis has been terrible ever since he signed his 5-year, $35 million contract in August 2011. With Blaine Gabbert and/or Chad Henne still under center, there’s no reason to take a chance on Lewis.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 56 catches. 620 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 92.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 148.

  2. Tyler Eifert, TE, Bengals. Bye: 12.
Tyler Eifert has great long-term fantasy potential, given that Andy Dalton’s physical limitations will have him favor the Notre Dame product over the middle of the field. However, there are tons of fantasy tight ends better than Eifert this year. He’s just a borderline TE2 with some upside.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 590 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 89.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 141.

  3. Jermaine Gresham, TE, Bengals. Bye: 12.
Jermaine Gresham was never a fantasy stud or anything, but his value took a major hit when the Bengals drafted Tyler Eifert in the first round. This ensures that Gresham will concentrate on blocking.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 51 catches. 570 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 87.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 138.

  4. Zach Sudfeld, TE, Patriots. Bye: 10.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Zach Sudfeld cost his team with a lost fumble at Detroit. He saw just one target from Tom Brady with Danny Amendola out, so that’s not a good sign.

Outside of Danny Amendola, Tom Brady has shown that he has the strongest connection with Zach Sudfeld, a rookie tight end. Sudfeld has been dubbed as “Baby Gronk,” so he’s an intriguing late-round flier. Temper your expectations though because he’s only a rookie.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 44 catches. 510 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 87.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 138.

  5. Heath Miller, TE, Steelers. Bye: 5.
JULY 23 UPDATE: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has reported that Steeler coaches have no idea when Heath Miller will be able to play. It’s likely that Miller is going to begin the season on the PUP list. He should be avoided regardless.

Heath Miller tore his ACL, MCL and PCL in December. You’ll obviously want to explore other options for your fantasy tight end.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 59 catches. 690 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 84.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 129.

  6. Delanie Walker, TE, Titans. Bye: 8.
Delanie Walker is primarily a blocker, but he’s pretty capable as a receiver. He’s not anywhere near starting fantasy material though.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 42 catches. 550 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 79.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 121.

  7. Kellen Winslow, TE, Jets. Bye: 10.
Kellen Winslow Jr. saw more targets than any Jet (6) against the Giants. Winslow can’t move at this point of his career, but the state of New York’s receiving corps is so bad that Winslow happens to be Geno Smith’s best option. Winslow caught four balls for 35 yards. He’s just a mediocre TE2.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 48 catches. 550 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 79.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 127.

  8. Scott Chandler, TE, Bills. Bye: 12.
Scott Chandler has six touchdowns in two consecutive years, but is unlikely to reach that total again in 2013 with E.J. Manuel running in a handful of scores.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 42 catches. 480 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 78.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 120.

  9. Garrett Graham, TE, Texans. Bye: 8.
James Casey is gone, so Garrett Graham is the official No. 2 tight end. He won’t have much of a fantasy impact unless Owen Daniels gets injured, however.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 43 catches. 420 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 76.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 120.

  10. Tony Scheffler, TE, Lions. Bye: 9.
The Lions run a lot of two-tight end sets, but Tony Scheffler doesn’t have much fantasy potential.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 42 catches. 500 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 74.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 116.

  11. Jeff Cumberland, TE, Jets. Bye: 10.
Jeff Cumberland is still somehow the Jets’ starting tight end. Not that it should concern you from a fantasy owner’s perspective.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 38 catches. 440 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 68.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 106.

  12. Dallas Clark, TE, Ravens. Bye: 8.
Dallas Clark gets an up arrow only because he wasn’t on a roster before Sunday. Clark is now the best tight end on Baltimore’s roster, which is saying a lot because he can’t move anymore. Don’t draft Clark in your league.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 44 catches. 490 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 67.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 111.

  13. Zach Miller, TE, Seahawks. Bye: 12.
JULY 25 UPDATE: Zach Miller was placed on the active PUP list with a foot injury. He tore his plantar fascia in the second round of the playoffs back in January. He shouldn’t have been on your fantasy radar anyway.

Zach Miller had more than three catches in only one game last year. He finished with just 396 yards and three touchdowns. Don’t bother.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 430 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 67.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 107.

  14. Luke Stocker, TE, Buccaneers. Bye: 5.
The Buccaneers were expected to draft a tight end, but didn’t because they have so many needs. It’ll be up to Luke Stocker to replace Dallas Clark, but Stocker hasn’t done crap yet.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 44 catches. 490 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 67.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 111.

  15. Rob Housler, TE, Cardinals. Bye: 9.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: Rob Housler suffered a high ankle sprain and will be out for several weeks. There aren’t many players who have been more disappointing than Housler this preseason. Avoid him in all formats.

AUG. 25 UPDATE: Rob Housler struggled once again. He dropped a touchdown against the Chargers. He made just one catch for eight yards in the third quarter, but sustained a minor injury in the process and had to permanently leave the game. Housler has been a major disappointment this preseason.

JULY 29 UPDATE: Rob Housler has enjoyed a fantastic training camp, according to ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando. Carson Palmer turned Brandon Myers into a PPR machine last year, so the same could be in store for Housler this season.

Rob Housler is my favorite sleeper tight end. Not that there’s anything wrong with this, but Bruce Arians loves tight ends – he drafted two with the Colts last year – and he spoke highly of Housler, calling him a mismatch. Carson Palmer made a habit of throwing to Brandon Myers in 2012. Housler could be a PPR machine.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 470 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 65.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 105.

  16. Jacob Tamme, TE, Broncos. Bye: 9.
Jacob Tamme was a huge disappointment in 2012. He came over to the Broncos with Peyton Manning, and was projected to be a quality TE1. Instead, he posted just 555 yards and two touchdowns. With Wes Welker in the mix, Tamme will receive even fewer targets.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 48 catches. 520 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 64.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 112.

  17. Mychal Rivera, TE, Raiders. Bye: 7.
Mychal Rivera has a chance to be Oakland’s receiving tight end. There’s some PPR potential with that because the weak-armed Matt Flynn will have to settle for underneath stuff.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 41 catches. 440 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 62.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 103.

  18. Joel Dreessen, TE, Broncos. Bye: 9.
Joel Dreessen caught five touchdowns in 2012, but only one of those came after Week 9. With Wes Welker due to receive a bunch of targets this season, Dreessen won’t be much of a fantasy factor.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 38 catches. 370 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 61.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 99.

  19. Zach Ertz, TE, Eagles. Bye: 12.
Zach Ertz goes to a roster with James Casey and Brent Celek, but he’ll be the top tight end before long. I wouldn’t trust any rookie tight end though, so you might want to draft him in 2014.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 33 catches. 420 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 60.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 93.

  20. Anthony Fasano, TE, Chiefs. Bye: 10.
Anthony Fasano will be Kansas City’s blocking tight end. He’ll catch some touchdowns on occasion, but don’t expect very much.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 27 catches. 330 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 57.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 84.

  21. Ed Dickson, TE, Ravens. Bye: 8.
AUG. 13 UPDATE: Ed Dickson didn’t have much fantasy value to begin with, but he’ll undoubtedly catch fewer passes than originally projected with Dallas Clark now on the roster.

Ed Dickson has been a huge disappointment and had clearly fallen behind Dennis Pitta in the pecking order. However, he’ll get a shot to redeem himself with Anquan Boldin gone and Pitta out for the year. He’ll have to be a greater part of the offense.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 30 catches. 340 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 52.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 82.

  22. Tony Moeaki, TE, Chiefs. Bye: 10.
The good news is that Tony Moeaki is now two years removed from a torn ACL, so he’ll be at 100 percent. The bad news is that Andy Reid drafted Travis Kelce to battle Moeaki for the starting job.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 36 catches. 400 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 52.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 88.

  23. Jordan Reed, TE, Redskins. Bye: 5.
JULY 22 UPDATE: Fred Davis is coming off an Achilles tear, so Jordan Reed is expected by some to assume the snaps. Well, not so fast. Reed has his own injury issues. He’s dealing with knee and quad problems right now, so don’t count on much from him in the early going.

Jordan Reed will be playing behind Fred Davis and maybe Logan Paulsen this season. He’s someone to watch out for in the future.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 32 catches. 390 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 51.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 83.

  24. James Casey, TE, Eagles. Bye: 12.
James Casey goes from one team with a bunch of tight ends to another team with a bunch of tight ends. It’s hard to like Casey with Zach Ertz on the roster.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 21 catches. 300 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 42.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 63.

  25. Lance Kendricks, TE, Rams. Bye: 11.
Lance Kendricks is now St. Louis’ second-string tight end in the wake of the Jared Cook trade.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 24 catches. 290 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 41.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 65.

  26. Travis Kelce, TE, Chiefs. Bye: 10.
Travis Kelce could actually start for the Chiefs this season, but he’ll have some competition from Tony Moeaki and Anthony Fasano. Either way, it’s better to stay away from a rookie tight end.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 21 catches. 260 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 38.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 59.

  27. Aaron Hernandez, TE, None. Bye: 0.
JUNE 26 UPDATE: Aaron Hernandez was waived by the Patriots after being arrested Wednesday morning. It’s highly unlikely that he’s going to play a single down anytime soon.

JUNE 22 UPDATE: A warrant for the arrest of Aaron Hernandez has been issued, according to Fox Boston. The warrant is for obstruction of justice, but it could be upgraded. It seems more and more likely with each passing day that Hernandez won’t be playing a single down this year.

JUNE 20 UPDATE: Things are getting really dicey for Aaron Hernandez. ABC News reported that the star tight end destroyed his cell phone and home security system. The report says that Hernandez’s mansion was scrubbed by a house-cleaning team Monday. Sports Illustrated and the Boston Globe are both reporting that Hernandez will likely be arrested. Hernandez obviously has to drop in all rankings. As it stands now, I wouldn’t select him prior to Round 10 in a 12-team league.

JUNE 19 UPDATE: If you haven’t heard, Aaron Hernandez is somehow involved in a homicide. Sports Illustrated reported Wednesday evening that Hernandez is not believed to be a suspect, but police are searching for a vehicle under Hernandez’s name. Police also spent more than two hours at Hernandez’s house Tuesday evening. I’m not going to move Hernandez down in my rankings just yet because this could all have nothing to do with how he performs on the field, but stay tuned. Luckily, we’re roughly two months away from most fantasy drafts, so there’s plenty of time for all of this to be cleared up by then.

With Rob Gronkowski nursing an injury, the door is open for Aaron Hernandez to potentially be the top fantasy tight end this year, right? Well, the problem is that Hernandez is hurt as well. He’s recovering from a shoulder and could open training camp on the PUP list. He’s expected to be ready for the regular season, but it’s still a concern.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 0 catches. 0 yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.

  28. Dennis Pitta, TE, Ravens. Bye: 8.
Dennis Pitta fractured his hip Saturday and will miss the entire season. This does raise the value of the other tight end, but Ed Dickson is not talented enough to be anything more than a TE2, so don’t waste your time with him.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 0 catches. 0 yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.

  29. Dustin Keller, TE, Dolphins. Bye: 6.
AUG. 19 UPDATE: Dustin Keller took a fierce hit to the knee from rookie safety D.J. Swearinger in the middle of the second quarter. Keller was down for a while and had to be carted off. He’s out for the season with a torn knee ligament. It’s a shame because he signed a 1-year “prove it” deal this spring.

AUG. 10 UPDATE: Dustin Keller tied for the team lead in targets from Ryan Tannehill against the Jaguars. He hauled in two of the three passes thrown to him for 46 yards and a touchdown. It looks like Tannehill will rely on him consistently, so Keller could flirt with low-end TE1 status.

Dustin Keller won’t be catching passes from Mark Sanchez for the first time since his rookie campaign, so that’ll be a welcome change to his fantasy output. Ryan Tannehill isn’t exactly proven, but he can’t possibly be worse than the man who was responsible for the Butt Fumble.

Projected 2013 Fantasy Stats: 0 catches. 0 yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected 2013 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2013 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.
