2012 Fantasy Football Rankings - Wide Receivers (Sept. 2):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40 | 41-60 | 61-95
- Jerome Simpson, WR, Vikings. Bye: 11.
AUG. 19 UPDATE: Jerome Simpson led all Viking starting receivers with three catches for 43 yards against the Bills. He impressively leapt over Bills’ safety Jairus Byrd on one of his receptions. It wasn’t as pretty as last year’s touchdown flip, but it was fun to see nonetheless. Keep in mind that Christian Ponder targeted Simpson more than anyone.
It’s often difficult for non-elite receivers to adjust in a new environment. Jerome Simpson will have to learn a new offense and develop chemistry with a new quarterback. Christian Ponder is limited anyway, so don’t expect much from Simpson.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 750 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 99.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 151.
- Santana Moss, WR, Redskins. Bye: 10.
AUG. 26 UPDATE: Santana Moss caught a 4-yard touchdown versus Indianapolis, but I’m giving him a stock down because Robert Griffin has simply not looking in his direction this preseason.
JULY 19 UPDATE: Santana Moss has looked terrific at OTAs. He had a down year in 2011, but only because he was nursing a hand injury. He’s now fully healthy and will be catching passes from a highly talented quarterback for the first time in his career. Moss should have a big season.
Santana Moss is a good buy-low prospect. He’s a forgotten man in Washington, given that the team brought in Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan for Robert Griffin. Moss had a terrible year in 2011, but was hampered by a hand injury that cost him a quarter of the season. Moss reportedly is in terrific shape, and he’ll be paired with who is probably the best quarterback he’s ever had in his career. Moss could easily have one last great campaign in 2012.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 53 catches. 700 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 98.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 154.
- Leonard Hankerson, WR, Redskins. Bye: 10.
Leonard Hankerson could be a good late-round sleeper. He’s a really talented second-year player who caught eight balls for 106 yards in November against the Dolphins. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending hip injury in that contest. With Robert Griffin now under center, Hankerson could be a guy who comes out of nowhere to have a breakout year.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 730 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 97.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 149.
- Brandon LaFell, WR, Panthers. Bye: 6.
Brandon LaFell is penciled in as Carolina’s No. 2 receiver, which means we’ll have more opportunities to see him struggle to get separation from opposing cornerbacks.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 45 catches. 730 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 97.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 142.
- Donnie Avery, WR, Colts. Bye: 4.
Donnie Avery paced the Colts with seven targets, catching six of them for 38 yards. Someone had to assume the concussed Austin Collie’s role, and it appears as though that’s Avery. However, he’s just a late-round flier in PPR leagues at best.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 56 catches. 710 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 95.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 151.
- Emmanuel Sanders, WR, Steelers. Bye: 4.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Emmanuel Sanders is no longer draftable in the wake of Mike Wallace’s holdout coming to an end.
JULY 29 UPDATE: It’s looking like Mike Wallace won’t play for the Steelers this season. This means that Emmanuel Sanders will receive many of Wallace’s targets. He did have lines of 5-46-TD and 5-70 last season in Weeks 7 and 8, so the potential is there for the third-year wideout.
Emmanuel Sanders has the No. 3 receiver job all to himself now that Hines Ward has retired. Even still, don’t expect a whole lot.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 710 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 95.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 145.
- Josh Gordon, WR, Browns. Bye: 10.
AUG. 25 UPDATE: With Greg Little dropping passes, Josh Gordon stood out as Cleveland’s top receiver against the Eagles. He caught three of the four balls thrown to him for 50 yards. I wouldn’t draft him, but he’s worth monitoring as a possible waiver-wire pickup.
The Cleveland Browns selected Josh Gordon in the second round of the supplemental draft. The coaching staff expects him to contribute right away, but don’t take that as a sign to draft him. He’s raw, while Brandon Weeden is still unproven. There are better late-round fliers available.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 51 catches. 700 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 94.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 145.
- Davone Bess, WR, Dolphins. Bye: 7.
Davone Bess is the only Miami receiver who played well against the Falcons. He showed nice rapport with Ryan Tannehill, catching four of the five passes thrown to him for 59 yards. Unfortunately, he’s just a bench option in deep PPR leagues at best. There’s just no touchdown potential with him.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 72 catches. 750 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 92.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 164.
- Laurent Robinson, WR, Jaguars. Bye: 6.
AUG. 12 UPDATE: Laurent Robinson led the tean with five targets from Blaine Gabbert in his debut with Jacksonville. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he converted only one of those targets for seven yards. He just looked out of sync with Gabbert. For example, he ran the wrong route on one play. He was open on another, but Gabbert didn’t see him. Avoid this guy in your fantasy draft.
Laurent Robinson has no aspirations to be a great football player. He could have stayed in Dallas and posted impressive numbers with Tony Romo. Instead, he chased a big signing bonus and will consequently rot in Jacksonville.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 54 catches. 650 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 89.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 143.
- Andre Roberts, WR, Cardinals. Bye: 10.
AUG. 24 UPDATE: I have to mention Andre Roberts. He has more targets this preseason (15) than Larry Fitzgerald (11). He finished this game with five catches for 32 yards and a touchdown. With Michael Floyd struggling, Roberts is worth a very late-round look in deep PPR leagues.
Andre Roberts’ fantasy value went into the toilet when the front office decided to spend the No. 13 overall pick on Michael Floyd.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 53 catches. 620 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 86.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 139.
- Golden Tate, WR, Seahawks. Bye: 11.
Golden Tate’s overall 2011 numbers look bleak (35 catches, 382 yards, 3 TDs), but he had 19 receptions for 209 yards in his final five weeks of the season. That’s a 61-669 line over a 16-game slate, but his stats have to be a bit inflated because of the apparent quarterback upgrade Seattle made when it signed Matt Flynn.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 54 catches. 680 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 86.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 140.
- Kevin Walter, WR, Texans. Bye: 8.
Life will be better for all parties once Kevin Walter is no longer the No. 2 receiver on an NFL team. Unfortunately, that won’t happen anytime soon because Gary Kubiak has a man-crush on Walter. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 620 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 86.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 136.
- Rueben Randle, WR, Giants. Bye: 11.
Rueben Randle did not show an ability to separate against the better cornerbacks in college football and he displayed limited explosion during the Combine workouts. However, the Giants believe he’s pro-ready, meaning he could be Eli Manning’s third receiver by September. The Hakeem Nicks injury will help him get first-team reps in OTAs, but Nicks will be back by the opener.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 46 catches. 610 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 85.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 131.
- Arrelious Benn, WR, Buccaneers. Bye: 5.
Arrelious Benn (or Arcrilious Bean, as Body Burners would say) is now two years removed from ACL surgery, but there’s no reason to believe that he’s anything more than a fantasy backup.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 41 catches. 610 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 85.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 126.
- Josh Morgan, WR, Redskins. Bye: 10.
I don’t understand why the Redskins paid $7.3 million guaranteed to a potential tertiary receiver in Josh Morgan, but then again, this is a front office that likes to use early picks on career backup quarterbacks. Morgan may not beat out Leonard Hankerson for the flanker job, so you should probably stay away from him.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 660 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 84.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 123.
- Earl Bennett, WR, Bears. Bye: 6.
I liked Earl Bennett as a sleeper last year because he was Jay Cutler’s favorite target. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury early on, and then when he came back, Cutler was out. It’s hard to like Bennett very much now because Brandon Marshall was brought in, but Bennett should still serve as Cutler’s preferred safety valve.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 650 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 83.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 133.
- Steve Breaston, WR, Chiefs. Bye: 7.
The injury-prone Steve Breaston probably won’t be able to accumulate 61 catches or 785 yards again. Jonathan Baldwin will see more targets go his way, which will diminish the very little fantasy value that Breaston had left.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 700 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 82.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 134.
- Jason Avant, WR, Eagles. Bye: 7.
Jason Avant is a very skilled slot receiver, but he’s the No. 5 option for Philadelphia’s quarterback behind DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Brent Celek and LeSean McCoy. Unless Jackson or Maclin suffers an injury, Avant will just be an average backup in PPR formats.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 640 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 82.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 134.
- Vincent Brown, WR, Chargers. Bye: 7.
AUG. 19 UPDATE: Vincent Brown is a late-round sleeper I had my eye on. He had an impressive 18-yard touchdown in this contest, but as he was going to the ground, a defender landed on his foot, which rolled over to the side. It was not pretty to watch. Brown couldn’t get up and yelled in agony. He was carted off and has since been ruled out for eight weeks with a broken ankle. What a shame.
AUG. 10 UPDATE: Vincent Brown is a stud. He caught four passes for 81 yards and a touchdown in the preseason opener. Most of this was in the second quarter from backup quarterback Jarrett Lee, but he definitely showed off his superior athleticism. It’s just a matter of time before he’s in the starting lineup ahead of Robert Meachem.
I’ve wanted to add Vincent Brown to my rankings for a while after discovering that I forgot him initially, but it kept slipping my mind. Brown is worth drafting late because he’s a talented player who is part of an explosive offense. Robert Meachem could easily flop (or Malcom Floyd could get hurt), allowing Brown to start.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 28 catches. 420 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 60 (80).
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 88 (108).
- Andre Caldwell, WR, Broncos. Bye: 7.
Peyton Manning’s third receiver will always have fantasy value, assuming Manning isn’t completely done (which he very well could be).
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 48 catches. 550 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 79.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 127.
- Nate Burleson, WR, Lions. Bye: 5.
Nate Burleson’s fantasy value was all but destroyed when the Lions drafted Titus Young last year. Well, the second-rounder used on Ryan Broyles makes things much worse. Burleson probably shouldn’t be rostered unless you’re in the deepest of leagues.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 590 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 77.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 129.
- Brian Hartline, WR, Dolphins. Bye: 7.
Chad Ochocinco was signed Monday night, so Brian Hartline will probably not be the No. 1 receiver this year. There is some belief that Hartline is injured as well. He’s now irrelevant in the fantasy realm unless Ochocinco is a final cut – which is a very realistic possibility.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 41 catches. 590 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 77.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 118.
- Stephen Hill, WR, Jets. Bye: 9.
Stephen Hill has immense upside, but he’s really raw. He and Tim Tebow could have a good rapport at some point though; Tebow had lots of success throwing to another Georgia Tech wideout in Denver.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 35 catches. 610 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 73.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 108.
- Mohamed Sanu, WR, Bengals. Bye: 8.
The Bengals envision Mohamed Sanu as their next T.J. Houshmandzadeh. He doesn’t have the explosion to be a No. 1 receiver, but he’ll be a solid possession type. There’s an opening at the WR2 position on the roster.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 45 catches. 540 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 72.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 117.
- Chris Givens, WR, Rams. Bye: 9.
One of these Ram receivers could break into the starting lineup this year. Of course, that doesn’t mean much because Sam Bradford throwing to a rookie receiver doesn’t exactly scream fantasy potential.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 35 catches. 490 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 67.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 102.
- Harry Douglas, WR, Falcons. Bye: 7.
Harry Douglas is a much better real football player than he is a fantasy player. There’s no reason to have him on your fantasy roster.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 43 catches. 530 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 65.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 108.
- Eddie Royal, WR, Chargers. Bye: 7.
Eddie Royal will be Philip Rivers’ third receiver this year. He’ll also contribute on special teams, which will take away from the very little fantasy potential he has.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 440 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 62.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 102.
- David Gettis, WR, Panthers. Bye: 6.
David Gettis is Cam Newton’s third receiver. He’s coming off a torn ACL, so there’s nothing to be excited about here.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 35 catches. 490 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 61.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 96.
- Randy Moss, WR, 49ers. Bye: 9.
I’ll be shocked if Randy Moss makes the 49ers’ roster, let alone produces for fantasy purposes. I suppose he’s not a terrible final-round flier, but he’s a one-trick pony who can’t do his trick anymore.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 22 catches. 340 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 58.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 80.
- A.J. Jenkins, WR, 49ers. Bye: 9.
The 49ers reached for A.J. Jenkins. It’ll take some time for him to produce, especially considering that he was out of shape at OTAs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 28 catches. 440 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 56.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 84.
- Nick Toon, WR, Saints. Bye: 6.
Any Saint receiver has fantasy upside. There is some playing time available in the wake of Robert Meachem’s signing with San Diego.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 30 catches. 360 yards. 3 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 54.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 84.
- Donald Jones, WR, Bills. Bye: 8.
Donald Jones registered 23 receptions for 231 yards and a touchdown in eight games last year. He’s not worth rostering.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 420 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 54.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 94.
- Brian Quick, WR, Rams. Bye: 9.
AUG. 13 UPDATE: Brian Quick had a disappointing debut. His one and only catch came from Kellen Clemens, which was a 9-yard slant. He was targeted only one other time.
Brian Quick has tons of upside, but is really raw. I wouldn’t bet on him posting big numbers this year.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 30 catches. 410 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 53.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 83.
- DeVier Posey, WR, Texans. Bye: 8.
JUNE 10 UPDATE: DeVier Posey is having a poor showing at OTAs, which was predictable, given his off-the-field issues. He’s behind Lester Jean and even fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin at the very moment. Don’t bother with him.
DeVier Posey was a reach in Round 3, but all he needs to do is beat out Kevin Walter for playing time. There’s a chance that could happen.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 28 catches. 350 yards. 2 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 47.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 75.
- Devin Hester, WR, Bears. Bye: 6.
Devin Hester is only worth a roster spot in leagues that factor in return yardage.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 25 catches. 330 yards. 1 total TD.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 39.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 64.
- Ryan Broyles, WR, Lions. Bye: 5.
Ryan Broyles has a bright future ahead of him, but will likely start the 2012 season on the PUP list.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 23 catches. 300 yards. 1 total TD.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 36.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 59.
- Terrell Owens, WR, Seahawks. Bye: 11.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: The Seahawks have released Terrell Owens, a move that was both predictable and necessary. Owens’ career is over.
AUG. 20 UPDATE: The Seahawks need to cut Terrell Owens immediately. He’s useless. He ran the wrong route on the first drive, which resulted in an incompletion. He couldn’t get open against Champ Bailey for most of the evening. The one exception occurred in the second quarter when he had a God-awful drop in the end zone for what would have been a 46-yard touchdown. Matt Flynn targeted Owens five times, yet Owens couldn’t come up with a single catch. That’s because he’s completely finished. He’s taking away opportunities from younger receivers who deserve a chance, and it’s only a matter of time before he starts hurting team chemistry.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Stats: 0 catches. 0 yards. 0 total TDs.
Projected 2012 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2012 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.
