2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Crabtree, Sanchez, Millen
ENJOYED THE MOCK. I ALSO THINK CRABTREE IS A VIALBLE OPTION AT NUMBER 2. I THINK WITH DEVANEY AS THE GM HE IS GOING TO TAKE THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE. I THINK THE LINE CAN BE ADDRESSED IN ROUND(S) 2 & OR 3 AND IN FREE AGENCY. MY HOPE IS THAT SOME TEAM FALLS IN LOVE WITH CRABTREE AND TRADES UP. THE RAMS NEED HELP EVERYWHERE.
My Response:
Glad you like the Michael Crabtree pick. For me, it makes too much sense. Why would the Rams pass up the best player available who fits a need for a lesser prospect?
As for trading up, I don’t see it happening. I addressed it in the Lions write-up of my new mock update. It takes way too many resources to trade up, and owners don’t want to spend tons of money on an unproven commodity in this economy.
I agree, crabtree is worthy of the #2 overall pick. But no team, NONE, except for the teams that could truly care less whether they win or lose (like say, the lions), will EVER pick a player based on whether or not their jersey would be a hot seller. Do you really think any GM with a functioning brain would chose one player over another based on projected jersey sales? That was an absolutely silly comment, and to me, you seem way smarter than that to need to rely on to make your argument.
crabtree could go #2 overall, but the economy and jersey sales will have NOTHING to do with it.
My Response:
I don’t think the economy and the jersey sales are the primary reason why the Rams will take Michael Crabtree, but it has to be somewhat of a factor, even if it’s a small one. The economy is worse than it’s ever been, and Crabtree would sell jerseys better than anyone out there.
Some teams have drafted players recently for fan feedback. Look at the Dolphins two years ago, who reached for Ted Ginn at No. 9 because he was an exciting player. Al Davis (who wants to win, even though his moves make that hard to believe) took Darren McFadden last year when running back wasn’t a need at all. You could make the case the Vikings did the same thing with Adrian Peterson when they had Chester Taylor, a 1,200-yard rusher.
We’ll see what happens. Crabtree seems to make the most sense for the Rams right now for a bunch of reasons. I guess we’ll agree to disagree on this particular reason.
Mark Sanchez will not go to the Chiefs at No. 3 with only one full year of college experince as a starter – he is too risky at number 3. Aaron Curry makes alot of since with the Chiefs likely to make the move to the 3-4 defense, they need alot of help in the middle. I already think the Chiefs will make a run at another middle linebacker through free agency and Curry is versatile enough to play outside while Clint Sinstim could move to the line when we move to the 4-3 to mix things up.
There are alot of holes to fill on the roster and don’t see any smart GM throwing a young QB to the dogs without help, so I see Tyler Thigpen being the rag doll for at least one more season, and if he does well and can run an offense other then the spread, the Chiefs have found a diamond in the rough for a future QB.
My Response:
Thanks for the e-mail, but I couldn’t disagree with you more.
Every single pick in the NFL Draft is risky. Anyone can be a bust. Anyone – even Aaron Curry.
Check out the trends for the first three NFL Draft picks since 1998. Only one linebacker has been drafted in the top three since then, and that linebacker was a bust. That’s because the linebacker position isn’t one of great value.
Top Three NFL Draft Pick Trends
The Chiefs are in a new regime, and new regimes almost always mean a first-round pick spent on a quarterback. I like Tyler Thigpen myself, and I think he deserves a shot to be the starter, but my mock draft is based on what I think WILL happen; not on what I think SHOULD happen.
Hey, I got the Lions figured out. Trust me. Oh yeah.
1. Michael Crabtree– He’s the best player in the draft, and also makes the best player on their team better, CJ.
20. Brandon Pettigrew– Will help out kevin smith immensely, also provides the weapon as a receiver. Trust me on this one.
33, 65, and the other 3rd: OT, OC, ORG. I’m thinking. the left side should be athletic and the right side more mauling, but Detroit needs at least semi-athletic lineman because of k.smith’s prowess in the zone runs. Maybe they go Kropog at 33, Wood at 65 and Urbik next or something, or maybe even Herman Johnson (can he move??) at 33 and Tupou at 65 and Wood/Luigs next. I dunno, but I think that would be dynamite for their offense. Tony Kornholer could play QB with those guys. And even if it takes them time to develop, we’ll find out about Drew stanton and can draft a QB next year.
The defense is so far gone but the offense has a chance to be damn explosive. I am pretty much a genius.
You should try something like this and see what kind of hatemail you get. I actually think it could work out well for the lie-downs.
My Response:
I’m not sure if this is really Nate. I’m thinking this is Matt Millen, and you’ve hijacked Nate’s computer.
If the Lions hadn’t gone 0-16 this year, I’d be in favor of this draft, just for humor purposes. But I think those fans have been through enough. They deserve a promising draft, though I wouldn’t be too confident, considering one of the guys in charge still thinks Greg Lloyd is still in the league.
